Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments I'm so ashamed!!!!!! This is TERRIBLE writing. Awful writing. A bloody soap opera. Yet I have to look!

message 2302: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm reading Blood Meridian (still)and Book of Lost Things. That's quite a double feature...lol...from rated PG to rated NC17. I'll post my thoughts on Conolly in the appropriate thread. Blood Meridian gets more disturbing the further I get.

message 2303: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) I have started BoLT and I am a little depressed. I hope it picks up a bit.

Choke was good, but a little gross in places. I have NO IDEA how this book is going to transfer to film without either a)being born or b)changing the entire story. The casting really concerns me. I suppose I'll have to wait until September to find out.

message 2304: by Rose Ann (new)

Rose Ann Thanks Boof...I've heard all good things so far about Memoirs of a Geisha....I havent seen the movie either.
I'm only on chapter one...LOL...maybe if I got off of goodreads, I would get further!

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) Charity, I'll be interested to see what you think of BoLT after my disaster with it. Keep me updated.

message 2306: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Will do. I guess I wasn't expecting such a distressing opening...but, I'm willing to read on.

message 2307: by Stella Bryndís (new)

Stella Bryndís (stellabryndisx) | 4 comments I am currently reading Gossip Girl : Nobody Does it better (Book 7) by Cecily von Ziegesar

message 2308: by Tisha (new)

Tisha Rose Ann,

The movie is actually decent as well. I try to imagine what I wouldve thought of it had I not read the book. I can't help feeling it wouldve been semi-confusing. But who knows. Is there anyone who watched Memoirs of a Geisha without or before reading the book. If so, what did you think?

Also, I think I would be done with The Book Thief if I wasnt always on this site!

message 2309: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Seth The Hypnotist sounds interesting, but you're right,no one seems to have read it on GRs.Can you keep us posted. It sounds like an interesting read, and yes, you've got to love an evil hypnotist.

message 2310: by Rose Ann (new)

Rose Ann Donna...I loved the whole fact that the journal was left in a steamer trunk for so many years, and almost gone forever...then found and given to the owner...50+ years later.

I enjoyed the book...but didnt absolutely LOVE it. It was not a "I cant put this down" kind of book...towards the end, I just wanted to finish it up so that I could start something more "gripping"

message 2311: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments I saw her on the Today show here in NYC and thought it would be pretty interesting but it never did seem like I-can't-put-this-down book. But thank you.

Also Choke is a movie or soon to be movie? I did not know that. I will have to look into it.

message 2312: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments Donna,

What a fabulous read. I was a little put off when I found out it was a YA book at the library, but got into right from the get go and is so unique, couldn't put it down.

message 2313: by Joanie (new)

Joanie | 714 comments Madonna's brother was on an episode of Top Chef (love it!) when they did the restaurant wars and he was a jerk and seemed like a total sleeze.

I'm almost done with Perfume by Patrick Suskind and the it's on the The Book Theif

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) Joanie, what do you think to Perfume? I loved it (very bizarre at the end too).

message 2315: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments Kellie,

Started The Zookeeper's Wife and couldn't get into it even though I am a nut about the period. Decided it might be easier to listen to and requested it as an audio download from our library.

Anyone out there have the same availability through their library? If so, what are you requesting as a good listen?

message 2316: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Donna-
Choke just got made into a movie. I believe the nationwide release is slated for sometime in September.

message 2317: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments Just started The Lace Reader. 60 pages into it and not bad.

message 2318: by Joanie (new)

Joanie | 714 comments I like Perfume-it's definitely creepy. I'm listening to it in the car and reading it in the house and the narrator on the tape is really really creepy-it's great!

message 2319: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments I never heard a book on tape. I tried to use audiobooks once and downloaded it to my MP3 but it was very hard considering I was on the train. But I would like to try it again.

message 2320: by Val (new)

Val Nichols | 159 comments Donna, I've listened to many audio books and for the most part have truly enjoyed each one. The only one I didn't enjoy - even though I liked the story - was one read by the author (I can't even remember the title or author's name now). Her cadence was so distracting and annoying! It can really ruin a good book if the reader stinks.

Some of my favorites have been P.G. Wodehouse stories on tape. Hearing the authentic British accents (instead of the lousy version in my head) makes them so much more enjoyable.

message 2321: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments Donna, I could not get into THE ZOOKEEPER'S WIFE. It just did not catch my attention.

Also, I do not listen to books on tape, or audio books. My Dad loves them as he driving down the road in his RV.

message 2322: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) | 501 comments You guys are making me seriously hungry. Ken, I love horseradish too. When I make homemade mash potatoes I add a few tablespoonsful along with warm milk and butter. Yum!!!

message 2323: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (mcd724) | 117 comments Just finished Love the One You're With...not a fan...

Am now trying to decide between The Book Of Lost Things and Blindness...Have read the first chapters of each, but can't quite decide...To say they are different would be an understatement.

message 2324: by Tisha (new)

Tisha Michelle, Lori is a major fan of Blindness, so I trust that its good. Although, The Book of Lost Things is one of the August group reads so you can join in the thread.

message 2325: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Ken - I don't know if you are planning to read The Book of Lost Things or not, but when they mentioned Jung in the book, I thought of you. :-)

message 2326: by Rose Ann (new)

Rose Ann Donna....I bet you will enjoy Red Leather Diary then, especially if you live in NYC...lots of interesting bits of NYC history in there!

message 2327: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Beth, that is a genius idea! I love horseradish but very rarely have occasion to eat it because I don't do the meat thing.

Michelle, that's a tough call. You can't go wrong with Blindness, I think it's the best book I've read this year, but Book of Lost Things is this month's group read so better sooner than later on that one.

message 2328: by Mayra (new)

Mayra Villavicencio (gizel) | 2 comments I'm finish up Harry Potter and the deathly hallow, and then i will start son of the witch.

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) I've just finished the godawful book that is written by Madonna's brother (in a day - I couldn't wait to finish it). What on earth posessed me to buy it I do not know. It is utter trash written by a very self-pitying, name-dropping hanger-on.

Do not read this, people!

message 2330: by Cynthia (last edited Aug 07, 2008 03:03PM) (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments I just finished The Time Traveler's Wife...it was good but not outstanding...I'm glad I read it though and will be interested in seeing the movie when it comes out later this year.

Next for me will be What Was Lost by Catherine O'Flynn.

message 2331: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Boof, I saw her brother on the Chelsea Handler show a few weeks back. What a scuzz bucket! I don't know why he waited until now to write a tell-all, but the monkey on his back must be pretty expensive at this point.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments I also saw Madonna's brother on Top Chef and he oozed jerkiness.

Currently I'm still reading Steven Saylor's A Mist of Prophecies.

message 2333: by Leila (new)

Leila (justsortofreading) I LOVED The Time Traveler's Wife, Cynthia :D I'm still looking for another similiar and good drama/mystery/romance novel.

I'm still reading the Zahir by Paulo Coelho and Burning Bright by Tracy Chevalier. It's going too slow :/ I don't seem to be able to get in to the stories. I'm considering letting them be for a while and reading something else and then come back (it helps sometimes).

message 2334: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments I liked TTW but I think I was ruined for time travel romances by the Outlander series...I don't think anything can hold a candle to that series as far as those two elements are concerned for me anyway. The movie of TTW should be interesting though...not sure how they can do the whole naked man in front of a six year old thing (they probably changed that element for the film...although I wouldn't mind seeing Eric Bana in the buff).

message 2335: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
hi all
Michelle... well.. Blindness is my pick for you, if you fall head over heels with it, you'll be done in no time as you wont want to put it down! Then you will still be in time to read our group pick and get in on the discussions :)

Seth.. I want to hear about that book when you are done. You make evil hypnotists sound interesting !!

message 2336: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (mcd724) | 117 comments Alright, gonna go with Blindness. Normally I can juggle a couple of books at one time, but just the first chapter makes me think that is not the case here. Thanks for the suggestions.

message 2337: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Definitely a book you want to read by itself and when you know you have a good portion of time to read it as well, it's hard to leave a chapter unfinished.

message 2338: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Blindness is a really difficult book to put down once you're into it.You're in for a real treat Michelle.

message 2339: by Jenna (new)

Jenna | 224 comments I think I am one of the few people in this group that couldn't get into Blindness. I liked the story and the characters, but there was one part in particular in this book that I found so horrific that it turned me off from the entire book.

message 2340: by Mandy (new)

Mandy I think I know what you're talking about, Jenna, and I'll be interested to see how this book adapts to the big screen.

message 2341: by Sherry (new)

Sherry I know what you mean Jenna. There were parts of the book that were so difficult to read, but the sum of all it's parts made it a wonderful book for me.

message 2342: by Jenna (new)

Jenna | 224 comments Mandy, I am curious too how it will trasform into a movie. Hopefully they will delete that scene, or at least tone it down. I couldn't take it otherwise.

message 2343: by Kathyjo (new)

Kathyjo Allen | 9 comments I am new to this club but, just wanted to say how much I've enjoyed the Eve Duncan series, also.

message 2344: by Kathyjo (new)

Kathyjo Allen | 9 comments I am new to this group. My friends added me to Goodreads.com, so now I am hooked. I am reading the Host by Stsephanie Meyer at the moment, just waiting to get my hands on book #4 in the Twilight series. I usually read 3-4 books at a time, unless it is one that really grabs my attention. I just read 'MAFYA', plus am reading 'The Fire Study'. I will need to get back here with the authors.

message 2345: by Kathyjo (new)

Kathyjo Allen | 9 comments I love reading Iris Johansen. I enjoy reading the Eve Duncan series, also. So far, I've read all I can get my hands on. I read just about everything I can get my hands on and it is nice to know someone else enjoys the things I do.

Jen | 278 comments Welcome to the group, Kathyjo! It sounds like you are going to fit right into this group. It is quite addictive.

message 2347: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments Is every book going to become a movie??? Some actually work out but most of the book-turned-films really don't add up or they totally change the ending like in Hannibal!!

message 2348: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) I just started the fourth Harry Potter book this morning. It's another re-read for me, but I'm definitely looking forward to it!

message 2349: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments Just finished Stones from the River (very good) and now I am reading April Blood... By: Lauro Martines

message 2350: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 25 comments Just finished The Book of Lost Things, and I am starting The Book of Eve, by Constance Beresford-Howe. It was assigned reading in college and I remember really enjoying it. I loaned my copy to my mom, never to be seen again and also forgot the title :( Found it through a search engine, and I am hoping that I won't be dissapointed in re-reading it. It has been a LONG time since college :)
