Kristi (kristicasey) Emilly wrote: "I wonder if you like "love in the time of cholera"as much as i did?"

I found it interesting, but I only gave it 3 stars. The writing was done really well. The descriptions were great, but the characters irritated the...crap out of me.

message 23207: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicasey) I've decided to bounce between romance/light reads and my larger/more in-depth reads. So right now I'm reading: Our Red Hot Romance Is Leaving Me Blue then it'll be onto The Postmistress.

message 23208: by Patricia (new)

Patricia I finished The Pilot's Wife and have started The Heretic's Daughter. These are both my take with me books and I'm about to go outside and get The Heretic's Daughter out of the car! It's that good. I'm only about 70 pages in but I want to stay up all night long and read it!!!! I did start The Forgotten Garden but it's over 500 pages and will probably have to be returned to the library before I finish it. (I can probably find it at the booksale tomorrow.) I think I'll go put something else in the car and get Heretic's out.

Scribble Orca (scribbleorca) | 17 comments Hello, everybody.

I'm reading The Complete Sherlock Holmes, Vol I, and recently re-read (for the umpteenth time, I know, sad, very sad) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, because I was desperately in need of a weekend completely disowning my normal existence! Here's my review

I also just finished Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, and here are my thoughts .

Acts of the Apostles I read just after joining Goodreads, having met the author (in the virtual world). This techno-cyber-bio thriller deserves attention .

Parenting For a Peaceful World: my all-time favourite parenting book.

I remember seeing the Brother Cadfael books a few years ago, you've reminded me to look them up again, Susanna.

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Lahni wrote: "Just finished The Color Purple and I need a little time to digest before I decide what to read next."

I remember watching the movie a bit less than twenty years ago when I was very young and though I remember there was a lot of sadness, I also have an mage of softness. I read the book at the beginning of the year and (especially the beginning) I found so hard to read. I was wondering how I could have enjoyed the movie so much at such a young age!

I don't remember if I read High fidelity or another one last year. I do remember that I was planning to read a second book of him but after the fis tone I just lost all interest. I didn't like the story and the way he talks/ writes.

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Reading The Birth of Venus. I am very curious but for now it goes up and down.

message 23216: by Susanna (new)

Susanna (jb_slasher) I don't read plays, except for that one time when I read Romeo & Juliet for history class. But I picked up Sam Shepard's Seven Plays because of my OCD to read through various people's bibliography and it so happens it's Shepard's turn now. He is also an actor so that's another reason because I do enjoy his acting as well, heh. After I finish the plays, I'll pick up Jeff Lindsay's Dexter Is Delicious . Haven't heard very encouraging reviews so I'm not expecting much but there's always hope.

message 23217: by tiasreads (new)

tiasreads That's interesting, Susanna, I didn't know Sam Shepard writes. I've always liked his acting- I'll have to check out his writing.
I started reading Louisa May Alcott: The Woman Behind Little Women, a FirstReads win, but I had to put it aside for a while to read The Distant Hours: A Novel. I've been waiting so long for it! Love, love, love Kate Morton! The first 70 pages have not disappointed.

Suzanne, I've been checking the library website for two days for Distant Hours! I'm #6 on the list but they don't even have the book yet. I know they will get more than one copy but geesh when? It's been out two whole days LOL!

Have you seen the ads for the book on her website? There are two, check them out.

Sigh! Hoping to get to it this weekend.

message 23221: by Gabriella (new)

Gabriella (stardust_126) | 429 comments I started reading Freedom by Malika Oufkir, but stopped because it was starting to get a little boring. Freedom is a memoir about a woman who spent most of her adult life in a prison for a crime her father committed, and she talks about what life was like for her after she got released. it was okay, but after a while she just started describing what she saw outside of prison (all of the new inventions) and the difficulties she encountered with them. it just wasn't as interesting as i thought it would be. i would like to read stolen lives, which is the author's first memoir, which talks about her life inside the prison. has anybody else read that book? i want to read the joy luck club by amy tan soon.

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments i finished Blackbird House by Alice Hoffman last night. it wasn't great. i wouldn't have picked it up on my own, and i'm glad it was short so that i didn't waste a lot of time with it.

i started Second Thyme Around from Katie Fforde this evening. hopefully another quick read, then i have one more on my library pile. after that i think i may pick up Harry Potter #7 to prepare for the movie.

I am reading the Distant Hours as well and love it! I am always mesmerized by her writing, the way she paints a setting, and makes me feel as if I am really walking through the house with the characters. I am almost rationing the pages, because I have waited so long for it to arrive! I hope you continue to enjoy it!

Emma, I'm rationing, too! I was sad to discover that I'm half way through now. I love how you keep finding a new mystery every few pages. It's just sad that you can read it for the first time only once.

Patricia, the book is well worth your wait. But be forewarned- it's 670 pages long and life will be put on hold while you read!

message 23232: by Ralph (last edited Nov 14, 2010 06:21AM) (new)

Ralph McEwen Just finished The Name of the Wind. You should read this book. This 600 plus page book is one of a completed trilogy and I anxiously await the next publishing. This story took the author 7 years to write and seven years to sell, during the waiting to sell the author edited, polished and tightened it. The effort shows, there are little to no wasted wordings. The story is compelling. The descriptions of the places are effectively brief but thorough enough to leaving your imagination filling in the details. The characters are fully formed and believable; their interactions are written to further the story not just fill pages.

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments i read Second Thyme Around from Katie Fforde over the first part of the weekend. not bad, but not great. i liked the others i've read from her better.

i think i'll try and breeze through my final library pile book 31 Bond Street and then pick up the final Harry Potter in preparation for the movie.

message 23234: by tiasreads (new)

tiasreads Sigh- I finished The Distant Hours. Fabulous! Mesmerizing! Now I'm going to soldier on through my Louisa May Alcott book, although it's more about her idiot father than Louisa herself. I think I'll also start another book, maybe a Kristin Hannah. That's the great thing about BookSwim.com- so many books to choose from!

I had a hard time putting it down also. I watched the Return to Everest show (I thing on NatGeo) about a year or so ago and have been fascinated by Everest and people risking their lives to get to the top. It was an amazing story.

message 23243: by Beth (new)

Beth Hi everyone,
I recently read the following books, and I'm listing the # of stars I gave them on Goodreads (I give out very few 5 star ratings):
- Zeitoun, a nonfiction book about the horrible effects of Hurricane Katrina on one family, 4 stars
- Thunder Bay: A Cork O'Connor Mystery, a great mystery from Krueger, as usual, 4 stars
- The Second Glass of Absinthe: A Mystery of the Victorian West, 3 stars
- Emerald Silk, a lovely historical gypsy romance, 4 stars

I'm currently reading A Rule Against Murder and I'm enjoying it a lot. I was a little worried at first when it wasn't set in Three Pines, but when Peter and Clara appeared on scene, I was relieved. At least some of my favorite characters, besides Armand, his wife, and his investigative team, would be in the story.

Next, I hope to read Boundary Waters. It's the second book in Krueger's Minnesota series that I skipped over, and I want to go back in time and read it before continuing on with Red Knife: A Cork O'Connor Mystery.

I've really been enjoying catching up on the series written by these two authors. Once I do, I'll be diving into some other series that I'm behind on.
