Suzanne, I've been checking the library website for two days for Distant Hours! I'm #6 on the list but they don't even have the book yet. I know they will get more than one copy but geesh when? It's been out two whole days LOL!
Have you seen the ads for the book on her website? There are two, check them out.
According to my profile, I started The Postmistress yesterday, but sadly I haven't even had time to crack the spine yet. Sigh! Hoping to get to it this weekend.
I started reading Freedom by Malika Oufkir, but stopped because it was starting to get a little boring. Freedom is a memoir about a woman who spent most of her adult life in a prison for a crime her father committed, and she talks about what life was like for her after she got released. it was okay, but after a while she just started describing what she saw outside of prison (all of the new inventions) and the difficulties she encountered with them. it just wasn't as interesting as i thought it would be. i would like to read stolen lives, which is the author's first memoir, which talks about her life inside the prison. has anybody else read that book? i want to read the joy luck club by amy tan soon.
Lori wrote: "Finished Cursed today. Such a great quick read. My review can read here - http://thenextbestbookblog.blogspot.c...Now, getting ready to start [book:Pee On..."
Lori - when are you going to hit the Evolution of Bruno Littlemore??? You were so excited by that book? It has to be coming up soon - you can't have possibly had a 6 month back log of ARC's???!!!
i finished Blackbird House by Alice Hoffman last night. it wasn't great. i wouldn't have picked it up on my own, and i'm glad it was short so that i didn't waste a lot of time with it.i started Second Thyme Around from Katie Fforde this evening. hopefully another quick read, then i have one more on my library pile. after that i think i may pick up Harry Potter #7 to prepare for the movie.

report in how you are liking it. It was just ok for me. I really wanted to like it though. Hope it is better for you.
I finished Oscar Wao. I liked Lola's and Beli's stories better than Oscar's. Now I've started Shanghai Girls.

I am reading the Distant Hours as well and love it! I am always mesmerized by her writing, the way she paints a setting, and makes me feel as if I am really walking through the house with the characters. I am almost rationing the pages, because I have waited so long for it to arrive! I hope you continue to enjoy it!
Let me know what you think Eric. I am not one for reading Stephen King , but this has me intrigued .
Eric wrote: "Just starting the new Stephen King book "Full Dark, No Stars.""I just saw that one the other day. It's got 4 stories in it. They sounded really good, even though I'm not a big King fan.

Emma, I'm rationing, too! I was sad to discover that I'm half way through now. I love how you keep finding a new mystery every few pages. It's just sad that you can read it for the first time only once.
Patricia, the book is well worth your wait. But be forewarned- it's 670 pages long and life will be put on hold while you read!

The library finally got ONE COPY in. I'm #6 on the list so it will be awhile. I think the library only let's you have a new release for two weeks. I always try to read the new books and return them asap when I know others are waiting, hopefully others will do the same with this book!!!
Eric wrote: "Just starting the new Stephen King book "Full Dark, No Stars.""I just finished the first story which was really good. The second story was featured as an excerpt in Entertainment Weekly so I know I'll like the first few pages...
Just finished The Name of the Wind. You should read this book. This 600 plus page book is one of a completed trilogy and I anxiously await the next publishing. This story took the author 7 years to write and seven years to sell, during the waiting to sell the author edited, polished and tightened it. The effort shows, there are little to no wasted wordings. The story is compelling. The descriptions of the places are effectively brief but thorough enough to leaving your imagination filling in the details. The characters are fully formed and believable; their interactions are written to further the story not just fill pages.
i read Second Thyme Around from Katie Fforde over the first part of the weekend. not bad, but not great. i liked the others i've read from her better.i think i'll try and breeze through my final library pile book 31 Bond Street and then pick up the final Harry Potter in preparation for the movie.
Sigh- I finished The Distant Hours. Fabulous! Mesmerizing! Now I'm going to soldier on through my Louisa May Alcott book, although it's more about her idiot father than Louisa herself. I think I'll also start another book, maybe a Kristin Hannah. That's the great thing about BookSwim.com- so many books to choose from!
I finished Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese. A great read!I'm going to now move on to Still Alice by Lisa Genova.
I just started reading The Count of Monte Cristo today, which I heard so many good things about. It must be pretty good because I've already read 110 pgs!
Finished Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood and started Fly Away Home by Jennifer Weiner. It's getting pretty good now that the Senator's affair with one of his assistants (sound familar?) has become public.
Just finished EVEN SILENCE HAS AN END: MY SIX YEARS OF CAPTIVTY IN THE COLUMBIAN JUNGLE by Ingrid Betancourt. It was very depressing but I gave it 4 stars. Now am reading ON AGATE HILL by Lee Smith.
I finished Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster over the weekend. I was really impressed with this book. The writing actually made you feel like you were there. Now I'm reading The Book of Lost Things.
Patricia wrote: "I finished Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese. A great read!I'm going to now move on to Still Alice by Lisa Genova."
oooo let me know how you like still alice?? because i plan on reading that one very soon!!
Scott, I loved Into Thin Air. One of those books that forced me to stay up 'til like 3 to finish it.
Alex wrote: "Scott, I loved Into Thin Air. One of those books that forced me to stay up 'til like 3 to finish it."I had a hard time putting it down also. I watched the Return to Everest show (I thing on NatGeo) about a year or so ago and have been fascinated by Everest and people risking their lives to get to the top. It was an amazing story.
Hi everyone,I recently read the following books, and I'm listing the # of stars I gave them on Goodreads (I give out very few 5 star ratings):
- Zeitoun, a nonfiction book about the horrible effects of Hurricane Katrina on one family, 4 stars
- Thunder Bay: A Cork O'Connor Mystery, a great mystery from Krueger, as usual, 4 stars
- The Second Glass of Absinthe: A Mystery of the Victorian West, 3 stars
- Emerald Silk, a lovely historical gypsy romance, 4 stars
I'm currently reading A Rule Against Murder and I'm enjoying it a lot. I was a little worried at first when it wasn't set in Three Pines, but when Peter and Clara appeared on scene, I was relieved. At least some of my favorite characters, besides Armand, his wife, and his investigative team, would be in the story.
Next, I hope to read Boundary Waters. It's the second book in Krueger's Minnesota series that I skipped over, and I want to go back in time and read it before continuing on with Red Knife: A Cork O'Connor Mystery.
I've really been enjoying catching up on the series written by these two authors. Once I do, I'll be diving into some other series that I'm behind on.
I just finished The Postmistress, ugh, did not enjoy it at all. I wanted to read 'The Children's Book' next, but left it at a friend's house so had to start 'Peony in Love' instead. I have also received my first Firstreads win Starter for Ten: A Novel which I believe I have to read and review ASAP if I want to keep winning haha.
Just finished A Wizard of Earthsea and am looking forward to the rest of the series.Still working on The Moonstone as well as Inkspell and also The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon and enjoying all three so far.
Suzanne C wrote: "Sigh- I finished The Distant Hours. Fabulous! Mesmerizing! I have been moving faster than I would have liked, at about 100 pages a day, but I just can't keep myself from picking it up! Were you satisfied with the ending?
Lahni wrote: "report in how you are liking it. It was just ok for me. I really wanted to like it though. Hope it is better for you."I really liked it. I loved Fall 1940, Winter 1941, and Spring 1941. However, Summer 1941 (last section) left me...Sigh, I just didn't care for it. Otherwise I loved it.
That title has caused more than one laugh. Especially as I got the other book (Eat, Pray, Love) thinking it was the group read, and then realized I had gotten the wrong one. LOL. No, it's how you spell prey as in what you chase and eat.
It's a paranormal, shapeshifter book that's playing off of another book's popularity I think.
Emilly wrote: "I am struggling with "The Alchemist"it is so boring"I struggled through it too. Thank goodness it's such a small book.
I've started Brideshead Revisited and so far it's keeping my interest but I wouldn't say I love it. We'll see how it goes.
ARMISTEAD MAUPIN!!! I LOVE HIM!! I'm reading the Tales of the city series--"Significant Others" everyone has to read at least one Maupin book you will be hooked on phonics..lol
Everyone needs to stop suggesting such great reads. sigh. Or at least make the threads not so addicting so I can be reading instead of here! heh
Just finished El oro del rey. Still working on The Town in Black, The Magician and The Radetzky March, and on Sunday I started Me Cheeta: My Story.

Actually, I still have books that were sent to me from back in April (hangs head in shame). I am reading them according to request first - then by release date if possible. So Bruno, since it doesnt release until Feb2o11 I decided to push off a bit.
I keep looking at it and wanting to pick it up .... maybe I will cave :)

Emilly wrote: "I am struggling with "The Alchemist"it is so boring"I didn't care for it either. I think I skimmed the last part of it.
I finished The Aztecs today (a textbook, but a good one) and started Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood, which I've been really looking forward to. It'll be nice to read an actual novel. Feels like it's been a while.
I have not, Kitty; I'm working my way chronologically through history, and I'm still around 300 years short of WWI. :) Good?

I started reading Louisa May Alcott: The Woman Behind Little Women, a FirstReads win, but I had to put it aside for a while to read The Distant Hours: A Novel. I've been waiting so long for it! Love, love, love Kate Morton! The first 70 pages have not disappointed.
