Cody | 3 comments I just finished The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11 today which really provides amazing and exhaustive details of the events leading up to 9/11 and all of the people involved. I'm starting Two Treatises of Government tomorrow probably.

Betsy (mistymtladi) | 511 comments I was reading Farenheight 451... I took it to the laundramat, left to do some grocery shopping, and when I returned the book was gone. The book came from the RAG shop,so I'm not out money-wise,but ***, I only had 75 or so pages to go.

Flora Smith (bookwormflo) I just finished The Invisible Man and I really liked it.

I'm getting started on The Moonstone

message 23155: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Cody, those are some interesting books. I don't hear from folks who read political books like that very often around here. Good stuff, man.

Betsy, that's awful. :( Who steals books? Jeez.

I started The Aztecs today. It's more or less a textbook, so I'm braced for some dryness; it's written by an archaeologist. Those dudes aren't known for their thrill-a-minute writing styles. But it's not bad so far. The information is great.

What age would you say is good for Fever 1793? I know it's YA, right?

message 23158: by Laura (new)

Laura (lauramoore10) | 13 comments Yup its ya I would probably 7th grade plus just for subject matter its not graphic but deals with a lot of sickness and death.

message 23159: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicasey) Thanks! My daughter is in part of a gifted program and it was 1 out 4 books she could choose from. Reading level it's great for her, but content...enh...I wasn't sure. She's in 5th. Then again my kids are military brats, so unfortunately they understand better than most that life is finite, and people die.

Kate | 119 comments I'm in the middle of The Likeness by Tana French. Despite the huge, over the top coincidence in the main plot line, I'm quite enjoying it. Tana French has an easy flow to her writing and am flying through it even with its size. A good comfort read in between essay writing.

Meghan Kate wrote: "I'm in the middle of The Likeness by Tana French. Despite the huge, over the top coincidence in the main plot line, I'm quite enjoying it. Tana French has an easy flow to her writing..."

Have you read In the Woods? I read the Likeness first without realizing that ITW was the first of the series. Fortunately, and I give French a lot of credit, there are no real spoilers in TL, so it's okay if you haven't. And it clears up a lot of things alluded to in TL.

I agree the premise of the story (TL) is just really unbelieveable, but the story itself is well-written that it makes up for it.

It's sort of ironic considering the story you're reading. Maybe the censors took it! (But sorry for your loss.)

EG is another of my all-time favorite series. Card said that SFTD was written as a stand alone book, but that he felt that readers would want a bit more background, so he wrote EG. I think if you're satisfied with where the story left off, then you're really not missing anything by not finishing either series.

However, if you are interested, I really recommend Children of the Mind. It's a continuation from the SFTD series (Ender's Saga series #4). It mainly deals with this one planet which is styled after the Japanese lifestyle. The "chosen" have very odd ways of speaking to the higher power, but how it all turns out is really fascinating (to me). And I enjoyed the philosophical issues about government and religion he brings up in this story.

I can't remember for sure, but it should be okay that you missed a book as the main story focuses solely on this planet which really has nothing to do with the main plot of the series.

Karen (karenvwrites) | 112 comments currently reading High Anxiety by charlotte Hughes--Kate Holly series. really quite cute.
After nursing her hunky firefighter ex-husband Jay Rush back to health, Kate Holly is ready for a little fun, only to get stuck with an anger management group that turns dangerous when a gun-toting granny loses her temper. Kate’s hopes for some frisky business are further put on hold when a monster forest fire erupts several hours south of Atlanta, drawing firefighters by the droves, including Jay.

Kate’s professional life isn’t faring any better. Her patients seem to be getting kookier, her junk-dealing mother and aunt more outrageous, and her secretary is convinced her peculiar rash is something akin to leprosy! Kate is forced to hire oddball temp employee Abigail Davis who becomes fixated with her. If Kate thinks it strange when Abigail’s “makeover” leaves them looking frighteningly identical, she soon has to wonder just how far the troubled young woman will go to in order to win Kate’s affection. Agreed. She has a way of making the unbelievable, believable, normally I would find something like that distracting but I'm becoming more and more interested in finding out what happens next.

I had read In the Woods prior to The Likeness, and you're right, it definitely adds to it if you read it first, though it doesn't subtract much if you haven't from what I've read so far. Will be picking up Faithful Place by Tana French after this one :)

Ralph McEwen Just finished Hal Spacejock a fun break from my usual fair of mystery, sci-fi, adventure and horror novels. Now I am starting The Name of the Wind. I don't even know what the story is about and at 662 pages it's a little intimidating but my wife just loved it and strongly recommended my reading it and since I really respect her opinion, here goes. :)

I second Lori, which one would you recommend?

I've read Blindness (before the movie came out) and was blown away by the writing skill that took. A different book club considered reading another by him (I don't remember the title). Would love to read another by him.

I prefer the Thursday Next series to his Nursery Rhyme Crimes. I felt it wasn't as "smart" as the TN ones.

Have you checked out his website? It's got loads of goodies that may help you with the story.

Did you read the "sequel", Seeing? If so, how did you like it? It looks like the whole "tone" is different.

Shay, Seeing is a sort-of sequel to Blindness. It picks up in the same town with some controversy surrounding the dr.s wife... and deals with the government again on a shameful level.

It is different, but totally worth a read.

Cait (caitertot) | 604 comments I finished Room last night. It was pretty good, but it didn't knock my socks off. I started Great House by Nicole Krauss and so far it's a little slooooow. I really hope it picks up soon.

I'm also half way through David Copperfield and enjoying every bit of it. I'll drag this one out as long as possible; I love Dickens!

Efe | 181 comments I am still slogging through The Postmistress, I can't believe how boring and ho-hum this book is. I know I should be feeling something based on the subject matter, but for whatever reason the book is leaving me cold. After Sarah's Key and now this, I seem to be reading one dull book after the other. I'm planning on picking up The Children's Book next for the group read, so hopefully I will fare better with that one.

I believe that I have read the first book, third book and still have the second book to read LOL :o) I may need to read the Woods again since it has been awhile.
