About to start the new Saramago ARC I got in the mail - The Elephant's Journey. I am very excited to get started.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was an amazing read. I read that during my summer of classics a few years back. So glad I finally did!

message 21853: by Max (new)

Max I'm trying out The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay now. Has anyone read this and loved it? Or hated it? I feel like it's a very 'love it or hate it' kind of book, from the reactions I've heard, at least.

Michelle, I have that one sitting here at home, and someone I follow on Twitter just finished it and loved it!

I loved it, personally. I tried to read it once and had trouble with it, but the second time when I picked it up I had no issues getting into it. And then I couldn't put it down. I heart Chabon.

Maya (mrskitty) | 114 comments I just finished Broken By Kelley Armstrong and will be starting her next book No Humans Involved soon

message 21857: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Carol, I've eyed Shadow of the Silk Road many times but somehow never gotten around to reading the thing. Let me know how it goes.

message 21858: by Carol (new)

Carol Alex so far so good. It is not a dry travelogue so far. I am on page 125.

message 21859: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Cool! Yeah, the topic looked fascinating.

message 21860: by Sherrie (new)

Sherrie (syellico) Alisha wrote: "I loved Promise Not to Tell. It was so deliciously creepy. However, I have read Dismantled: A Novel and was very disappointed. I ended up giving it two stars."

Alisha, I agree with you. I loved McMahon's first two books but didn't like Dismantled. I do look forward to reading her again though.

message 21861: by Marti (new)

Marti (marjay) | 985 comments Well I have a couple of books to read for my in person book groups... In one we are reading Weight of Water (which I finished) and in other one I am reading Eat, Pray and Love...

by the by - did anyone else pick up a hint of incest in Weight of Water?

message 21862: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Flowers in the Attic what now?

message 21863: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments I am about two-thirds of the way through Island beneath the sea by Isabel Allende. This is my first read by her and unless the ending somehow disappoints (which, based on the writing style so far, I doubt) I would give this a 5 and highly recommend it.

message 21864: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 185 comments I finished Lucia, Lucia by Adriana Trigiani and am now reading The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind: Creating Currents of Electricity and Hope by William Kamkwamba.

message 21865: by Bridgit (new)

Bridgit | 475 comments Picked up Dead Beautiful because it has a pretty cover.

So far, seems like a poor man's Twilight, but it'll probably only take an hour and a half to read all 500 pages, so might as well keep going.

Enjoyable - IF i forget I have a brain.

message 21866: by Dero (new)

Dero I am finishing "Ten Degrees of Reckoning" by Hester Rumberg. Very sad.

message 21867: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jayme-reads) I'm still waiting for you to get over yourself and put that book on your shelf, Alex.

message 21868: by Loretta (new)

Loretta Michelle wrote: "I'm trying out The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay now. Has anyone read this and loved it? Or hated it? I feel like it's a very 'love it or hate it' kind of book, from the reactio..."

I absolutely adored Kavalier & Clay - one of my all time favourites. No doubt it helped that I was a comic book geek as a kid, so I loved all that stuff, but I also just thought the characters and the story were rivetting.

message 21869: by Flora (new)

Flora Smith (bookwormflo) I gave up on The White Queen I got about half way and couldn't stand it anymore.

I'm just getting started on The Odyssey and What-the-Dickens: The Story of a Rogue Tooth Fairy

Gotta love those quick reads! Even if they aren't 5 star quality.

message 21871: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Loretta, I loved Kavalier and Clay too. Was also pretty into comics as a kid - well, still am - so maybe that helps.

Jayme, I left all the books I read too long ago to remember my opinion about off my shelf...but I'll put it there with no review if it would make you happy. I pretty much flipped through looking for dirty parts, and I can't even remember if there were any and, if so, whether they were creepy.

message 21872: by Amanda (new)

Amanda I am about 1/4 of the way into The Samurai's Garden by Gail Tsukiyama. It's not a book I would have chosen on my own, but started reading it after 2 of my friends with similar book taste loved it. It is good so far - a quiet book, excellent description of settings.

message 21873: by Duanur (new)

Duanur I've just finished Envy by Anna Godbersen and I'll start the final book of the "Luxe" series called "Splendour"
I loved the serie but it is kinda heartbreaking. I hope it has a happy ending!! *-*

message 21874: by Nora (new)

Nora | 2 comments I just finished Confessions of a Video Vixen and as I said in my review I feel like I need a shower. Trashy summer read.

The one by John Keay? I found it interesting.

message 21876: by Joanie (new)

Joanie | 714 comments Alex, I'm sure it won't shock you to learn that my Trashy Book club was started after a few goodreads friends and I decided to re-read the Flowers in the Attic series. Sadly (or maybe thankfully!) we read My Sweet Audrina first and that killed all desire to read any more V.C. Andrews.

I have started Kavalier and Clay twice (both times while pregnant which is weird since I've only been pregnant twice!) but stalled out both times. I need to pick it up again if only so I can return it to my friend who I'm sure by now has forgotten that he ever loaned it to me!

No this one is by Colin Thubron, I am reading India :A History by John Keay.

Are we to assume that you want to risk another pregnancy? Must be a good book!

message 21881: by Caity (new)

Caity (adivineeternity) I just finished Mistborn: The Final Empire in the wee hours of the morning. Next up I have three books to get through:

The Well of Ascension, which is the second book in the Mistborn trilogy.
The Sweet Far Thing, which is the final book in the Gemma Doyle trilogy.
Citizens of London: The Americans Who Stood with Britain in Its Darkest, Finest Hour, which I have been meaning to read since February. It's the most important one, since it's an ARC I won on here and reviewing it might mean winning more books.

message 21882: by Marti (new)

Marti (marjay) | 985 comments the library came through for me big time.... but now I have five books to read before I go back to work...

The Map of True Places
Pray for Silence: A Thriller
Someone Knows My Name
The Exodus Quest

and Eat, Pray, Love by Sunday

No problem - right - who needs to clean the house, do the laundry and dishes... cooking is overrated anyway. LOL

message 21883: by Max (new)

Max Thanks for all the feedback on The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, guys. It's pretty slow going for me right now, I'm not gonna lie, but I'm only on page 40 so I'm sure it'll pick up. I've never been a 'comic book nerd,' per say, but I love art and illustrations and anything creative, not to mention I can already tell Michael Chabon is an amazing writer. Though I will say it seems like he uses harder words sometimes just for the sake of using harder words, but it's not so much that it's distracting for me. And sometimes I just think that my vocabulary is extremely limited, so that can just be all my fault.

message 21884: by Maria (new)

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments i finished the 4th book in the Pink Carnation series from Lauren Willig, The Seduction of the Crimson Rose. it was ok, defininetly not my favorite one. i had hoped to pick up the other 2 from the library, but OF COURSE the books, which have been on the shelf forever, are checked out now. grr.....

i'll probably start Second Chance from Jane Green tomorrow. however, i have a bake sale to prepare for and a 5 mile run to get in, so who knows how much reading i'll get done the next few days!

message 21885: by Madeline (new)

Madeline | 293 comments I've been on a quick and easy read kick the last few days. I read The Inside Story and loved it, one more til the series is complete and I'm looking forward to it! Then I picked up Charlie Bone and the Castle of Mirrors and it's good so far. I like this series, I know it appears a Harry Potter knock off, and although somewhat shallow feeling after the first book it's been steadily improving and I'm enjoying it.

On a side note, does anyone know of a good YA group here on goodreads? I know that a lot of us have multiple groups and I'm interested in a strictly YA group for the adult side of the audience :) any suggestions?

message 21887: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jayme-reads) Erika, I just finished book two, Stone of Tears, yesterday. I'm not sure what to think of the series. It's sure pretty trashy, but they're enjoyable and I don't have to think...at all. You're a fan though, eh?

And yes, Alex, it would make me really happy if you'd add it to your shelf so I can make snide remarks. It definitely has dirty parts in it and they're definitely icky.

I'm a member of YA Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Club and that group seems pretty active, although I haven't done much. A quick search brought up Young Adult Fiction for Adults as well as a bunch of others.

message 21889: by Madeline (new)

Madeline | 293 comments Thanks Caity, I checked it out and it looks like a good place. I appreciate the recommendation. Sometimes I'm hesitant to jump in somewhere new (although I did do that here with good result!), its just easier with someone to vouch for the quality. :)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments I just finished COLD EARTH by Sarah Moss and gave it 2 stars. An I put down 2666. Just could not get through part 1. Boring as he@#. Now reading the 2nd DANIEL X book by James Patterson.

Fiona, one of TNBBC's members runs a great YA group just for adults called The Wild Things if you want to check that out too!

Sasha And I've started The House of Medici: Its Rise and Fall. Quite good so far.

message 21900: by Kaion (new)

Kaion (kaionvin) Legs recovering from a cool day trip with my best gal yesterday, so I read Fledgling. Some interesting ideas, but they didn't go anywhere. I desperately need to read something *fun*.

Looking at my TBR, when I'd become such a depressing reader?
