Rayna (Poindextrix) (poindextrix) | 73 comments Just finished Wolf Hall and am moving on to The Informers. Talk about something completely different! I loved Wolf Hall. The Informers is my first Bret Easton Ellis, but I'm getting into it. Also still reading The Mysteries of Udolpho and some others that I almost completely abandoned while reading Wolf Hall.

Karendenice Bridgit, I totally agree with you. Maybe one day she'll get through this sick phase of her life and start putting out great books again. Maybe start another series.

message 20803: by Isaac (new)

Isaac Miller (isaac7985) I just finished American Gods by Neil Gaiman. I highly recommend it. It might not be a "beach read," but I thought it was a great summer book. I'm now dividing my time between Moby Dick, All the Pretty Horses, The Swimming-Pool Library, and If I Loved You, I Would Tell You This. All of them are excellent, although I must say I'm looking forward to finally getting through Moby-Dick. It's taken me a while.

Carol You are a better person than I . I put down Moby Dick last year. I drowned the sucker.

message 20805: by El (new)

El I read Moby Dick but didn't really care for it. I've been told I should try it again. I think those people are crazy for suggesting it. :) I'm glad you're enjoying it though, Isaac.

message 20806: by Carol (new)

Carol I just got The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet and Life and Times of Michael K. Barnes & Noble send me a free drama called The Glades. It is suppose to debut on July 11 at 10:00 pm Sunday.

In the interest of full disclosure, I will say that I haven't read every word of Moby-Dick. I've skimmed or skipped a lot of the boring bits, especially those chapters that read more like an encyclopedia of Cetology than a novel. I find the story riveting, but I'm not so interested in learning the finer points of mid-19th century whaling. So maybe you could try that, Carol and El.

I'm sure there are some who believe those chapters are essential to truly appreciating the book, but I just find the story much more interesting.

Rayna (Poindextrix) (poindextrix) | 73 comments I read Moby Dick a while ago and didn't enjoy it that much, but I've been considering giving it another shot. I just have so many other things that I want to read right now, so I guess we'll see.

Fair enough, but for those who haven't read it and enjoy epic stories I'd definitely recommend giving it a shot, no matter how they read it.

I just got the Glades too Carol. I wonder what their distribution strategy was for that - everyone within a certain time period? That seems really expensive. Only select choices? I had gotten Lolita.

I have about a dozen 'currently-reading' because I should be reading them and don't want to get led astray.
Of those I am actively reading one. Another has been abandoned for the meanwhile and a third was started and needs to be finished soon.
Two others are just 'heavier' books that require concentration so I don't want to be rushed.

I agree. One of the great things GR has taught me is that there is no shame in abandoning a book half way through. This means I no longer need to be afraid of starting a book even if I am not sure I will like it.

message 20828: by Petra (new)

Petra I finished The Coffee Trader a few days ago and quite enjoyed it. It was an interesting story of a man who had been "ruined" by the stock market & trying to make a come-back. It involves all sorts of intrigues, schemes, plans and very nicely ties in the fallouts, successes and consequences of any trading/scheming of the stock market. Very interesting. I'll be looking for more David Liss books. He writes well.
I've started listening to Shanghai Girls by Lisa See. So far, I'm enjoying the descriptions of Shanghai; its sights, culture and foods.
Today I plan on going through my bookshelf and seeing what jumps out and screams "read me next".

Good call Mona. The books are nowhere near as good as the TV shows...especially the Dexter books.

I don't remember who mentioned they were really liking the Dexter books but if you like the books the show will rock your face.

Bridgit | 475 comments I'm partway through Dreadnought - its my first Steampunk. Liking it so far.

Imagine: its the 1880s and the civil war is still raging. Texas is and always will be its own country. Dirigibles are the most popular and efficeint mode of cross-country transportation. The railroads rule the country, taking on a much more 'active' role in the war. And both sides have developed giant mechanized fighting robots.

Interesting concept so far. Am following the path of Nurse Mercy, a nurse for the confederacy, whose husband was a soldier for the north, as she makes her way west through the heart of the civil war.

Its a bit slow at times, but the revisionist ideas are really intriguing.

Never made it thru Moby Dick --- wow --- but was able to read Ahab's Wife. And so it goes......
