In the interest of full disclosure, I will say that I haven't read every word of Moby-Dick. I've skimmed or skipped a lot of the boring bits, especially those chapters that read more like an encyclopedia of Cetology than a novel. I find the story riveting, but I'm not so interested in learning the finer points of mid-19th century whaling. So maybe you could try that, Carol and El.
I'm sure there are some who believe those chapters are essential to truly appreciating the book, but I just find the story much more interesting.

Fair enough, but for those who haven't read it and enjoy epic stories I'd definitely recommend giving it a shot, no matter how they read it.

I just got the Glades too Carol. I wonder what their distribution strategy was for that - everyone within a certain time period? That seems really expensive. Only select choices? I had gotten Lolita.

I haven't read the series, but I am a devoted Showtime series fan! Welcome to the club. Muwahaha!

And after the library visit on Monday, I have:
Still Alice
Anna Karenina by Tolstoy
Odd Mom Out by Jane Porter
Flirting with 40 by Jane Porter
Wild Ride by Jennifer Crusie and Bob Mayer (just finished yesterday).

I have ..."
Kristi: I am also a DEXTER fan but watch the seasons on DVD. Same with True Blood on HBO. But I don't read the books for either series.

But we don't disagree on everything. We both really liked Anna Karenina.

Now I'm diving head first into Infinite Jest. I also have Winesburg, Ohio going on the side, and I'm about to start The Count of Monte Cristo on audio while I clean the carpets.

I have about a dozen 'currently-reading' because I should be reading them and don't want to get led astray.
Of those I am actively reading one. Another has been abandoned for the meanwhile and a third was started and needs to be finished soon.
Two others are just 'heavier' books that require concentration so I don't want to be rushed.

I have just got The Windup Girl and I am looking forward to reading it.

So you liked it? :0)

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who finds Brave New World over the top and simplistic.
All those 5 stars glaring at my 2 stars intimidated me.

Moby Dick is beached on my bedside table collecting dust. I prefer to watch the film with Jean-Luc Picard, I mean Patrick Stewart.

I agree. One of the great things GR has taught me is that there is no shame in abandoning a book half way through. This means I no longer need to be afraid of starting a book even if I am not sure I will like it.

I thought it was great! I devoured it in 1 day!
Will be checking out some of his other stuff soon! :)"

I will have to check that out!! Thanks! :)

I've started listening to Shanghai Girls by Lisa See. So far, I'm enjoying the descriptions of Shanghai; its sights, culture and foods.
Today I plan on going through my bookshelf and seeing what jumps out and screams "read me next".

Good call Mona. The books are nowhere near as good as the TV shows...especially the Dexter books.
I don't remember who mentioned they were really liking the Dexter books but if you like the books the show will rock your face.

I read this book (first reads win). I looked at your review and thought it was pretty funny that you put that quote from the book in it. :-)

Thanks, although I must say the 1950's film with Gregory Peck as Captain Ahab (he played Father Mapple in the Patrick Stewart version) is much better, IMO.

Haha, I couldn't help myself. The irony of the quote jumped out at me when I read it. :oD

and will start "The Postmistress"

Oooh! How was Open??? I love tennis....is it all about Agassi's life, including a lot about his tennis career? Or is there more about the school he started? I'm sure I'll have to add it to my reading list soon!

How was the Postmistress? I look at it every time I go to the book store, but I never get it.

Have you read other Lisa See books (Peony in Love, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan and her family biography On Gold Mountain: The One-Hundred-Year Odyssey of My Chinese-American Family)? She's one of my favorite authors.

F1Wild, I've read Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, which I really liked, and I have On Gold Mountain: The One-Hundred-Year Odyssey of My Chinese-American Family on my TBR list. Lisa See is a fairly new author for me. I hope to enjoy her other books as much as I enjoyed Snow Flower & The Secret Fan.

M. Open is about everything you mentioned above. I liked it but I liked him and tennis so it was enjoyable to me. Hope you enjoy it!

Laura, I wasn't sure I was going to stick with it at first but I've gotten a little further into it (about 100 pages) and am enjoying it more now. I will try and remember to post how I liked it when I'm finished.

Imagine: its the 1880s and the civil war is still raging. Texas is and always will be its own country. Dirigibles are the most popular and efficeint mode of cross-country transportation. The railroads rule the country, taking on a much more 'active' role in the war. And both sides have developed giant mechanized fighting robots.
Interesting concept so far. Am following the path of Nurse Mercy, a nurse for the confederacy, whose husband was a soldier for the north, as she makes her way west through the heart of the civil war.
Its a bit slow at times, but the revisionist ideas are really intriguing.

They can have Arizona too."
I wish i could take a dirigible to and from work every day...

You will!

They can have Arizona too."
Hey hey hey!!!!! Not all of us in Arizona are as idiotic as our politicians!!

That would be cool! Anything to get off the stupid highways. :-)

Never made it thru Moby Dick --- wow --- but was able to read Ahab's Wife. And so it goes......
