What are you reading?
I'll chime in on Moby-Dick. I found it to be a good read, but I will admit it could've been a lot shorter. Definately a classic though.

Of those I am actively reading one. Another has been abandoned for the meanwhile and a third was started and needs to be finished soon.
Two others are just 'heavier' books that require concentration so I don't want to be rushed.

One of the great things GR has taught me is that there is no shame in abandoning a book half way through. This means I no longer need to be afraid of starting a book even if I am not sure I will like it.

I finished The Coffee Trader a few days ago and quite enjoyed it. It was an interesting story of a man who had been "ruined" by the stock market & trying to make a come-back. It involves all sorts of intrigues, schemes, plans and very nicely ties in the fallouts, successes and consequences of any trading/scheming of the stock market. Very interesting. I'll be looking for more David Liss books. He writes well.I've started listening to Shanghai Girls by Lisa See. So far, I'm enjoying the descriptions of Shanghai; its sights, culture and foods.
Today I plan on going through my bookshelf and seeing what jumps out and screams "read me next".

The books are nowhere near as good as the TV shows...especially the Dexter books.
I don't remember who mentioned they were really liking the Dexter books but if you like the books the show will rock your face.

Thanks, although I must say the 1950's film with Gregory Peck as Captain Ahab (he played Father Mapple in the Patrick Stewart version) is much better, IMO.

I've finished Lady of the Butterflies, really enjoyed it. Now I'm finally starting Persuasion, the last of Austen's novels for me to read. I hope I love it. I hate finishing a favorite author's works.

Lisa See is a fairly new author for me. I hope to enjoy her other books as much as I enjoyed Snow Flower & The Secret Fan.

M. Open is about everything you mentioned above. I liked it but I liked him and tennis so it was enjoyable to me. Hope you enjoy it!

Laura, I wasn't sure I was going to stick with it at first but I've gotten a little further into it (about 100 pages) and am enjoying it more now. I will try and remember to post how I liked it when I'm finished.

I'm partway through Dreadnought - its my first Steampunk. Liking it so far. Imagine: its the 1880s and the civil war is still raging. Texas is and always will be its own country. Dirigibles are the most popular and efficeint mode of cross-country transportation. The railroads rule the country, taking on a much more 'active' role in the war. And both sides have developed giant mechanized fighting robots.
Interesting concept so far. Am following the path of Nurse Mercy, a nurse for the confederacy, whose husband was a soldier for the north, as she makes her way west through the heart of the civil war.
Its a bit slow at times, but the revisionist ideas are really intriguing.
Man, I wish Texas was its own country. They can have Arizona too.
I'm currently reading Wilkie Collins's The Moonstone. It's all right, though I am a bit unsure as to the point of the Moonstone's hold on everything, lol.

I am reading Mistress of Rome by Kate Quinn. Loving the story and the historical aspect. Lepida is sooo bad...she makes you want to gnash your teeth as you are turning the page to continue reading as fast as you can. Great main character of Thea.Never made it thru Moby Dick --- wow --- but was able to read Ahab's Wife. And so it goes......
Just finished 2 books while on vacation. THE PIANO TEACHER by Janice W.K. Lee and BIG GIRL by Daniele Steele. Still reading THE GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNETS NEST. It's from the library and didn't want to mess it up at the beach.

So far, I am enjoying it. I think Pearl & May are pretty spoiled girls for 1937 China. The descriptions of the City and the food are very well done.

Plus, the Grand Canyon is pretty breathtaking. I like having it in our country lol. Geologically speaking its quite the win too.
Finished Official Book Club Selection: A Memoir According to Kathy Griffin and now I am reading Shopgirl.... should finish that this evening and then it will be Born Standing Up: A Comic's Life
Just finished reading cruel and unusual by patricia cornwell and now started reading thanks for the memories by cecelia ahern.I'm only 50 pages in, but liking this book so far
Just finished "The Last Stand" by Nathaniel Philbrick.Currently about 1/2 way thru "Maisie Dobbs" by Jacquline Winspear. A good read thus far.

What did you think of 'The Last Stand'? It looks really good and I'm excited to read it.
I'm just back from a 3.5 week cruise to the Mediterranean. I've decided to reread Heart of Darkness to get back into the swing of things.
finished Bag of Bones, started The New Annotated Dracula which is really interesting so far even though I'm reading about the history of the story and haven't gotten to the story yet.
Just finished The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I liked it well enough to continue with the series.Currently reading The Help for my face-to-face book club. Very enjoyable read thus far.
