Mona Garg (k1721m) | 116 comments Lori & Mary: Both of these Vish Puri mysteries sound fun and I've added them to my list. I've already reserved The Case of the Missing Servant at my library and I'm only 2nd in line. I'm not sure if this is a good or bad thing.

F1Wild Mona wrote: "F1Wild:

Girl in Translation is on my to-read list and Kitchen Chinese: A Novel About Food, Family, and Finding Yourself this looks like another good one."

These are both more modern day stories - Girl in Translation is heartbreaking, yet inspiring and I tend to think it mirrors the authors life a bit. Kitchen...is more of a NY to Beijing Bridgit Jones/Nanny Diaries style in writing, not content.

That's been on my TBR list since before it was published (so, why haven't I read it yet??). I hear it allows us to meet a completely different person than we saw as a media image on the court.

Yes! It's pretty good so far."

I read he has been working on a screenplay version of the book for film. Have you seen any of his (and Stephen Fry's) Jeeves & Wooster stuff?? Hilarious!!

Yeah! The book came out over a year ago, so that's probably why the line is so short.

message 20607: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 116 comments Lori: I hope that's the reason. Usually when the line is short, either everyone has read/seen it or nobody wants to.

I had never heard of it until now. I learn about so many books/authors here.

Betsy (mistymtladi) | 511 comments Hey,
I finished The Passage by Cronin. The characteization was marvelous. I got a little bogged down at the end,but I think that was me not the book. If for some reason it does get chosen as the monthly book, it will be a delight to re-read as I just inhaled this time around.

Hate to break it to you Alex, but you wouldn't find it. My sister came over yesterday and took possession of it while I wasn't looking. I chased her down screaming "It's nothing like Twilight, you won't like it!", but she decided to try anyway...

Paula | 1098 comments F1Wild, I'm only about 50 pages in but it's got me hooked so far. It starts out with the final game before retirement and the process he goes through before each game. Now I'm into his childhood. So far I can't believe he's the man he turned out to be. I'll leave it there and maybe it will pique your curiosity. I'm really enjoying it so far. : )

message 20615: by Matthew (new)

Matthew Frary | 90 comments So I just finished Pop Goes the Weasel (Alex Cross,#5) and gave it four stars. I like this series because if nothing more they usually make for quick, entertaining and amusing reads.

Today I plan on starting The Kingmaking. It's a historical-fiction book (my favorites) on what the real life King Arthur could or would have been like. This is the first book of a three book series. I'm really looking forward to starting this one tonight.

message 20620: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jayme-reads) I started The Island of The Island of Dr. Moreau on audio today. Should be a quick and interesting read.

message 20621: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Ah cool, Jayme! Lemme know if it's good. You've read League of Extraordinary Gentlemen #2, right? (On my wife's netbook, too irritating to check your profile.)

message 20622: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jayme-reads) ...I haven't read any of the League yet...I'm going to the corner of shame now.

message 20623: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Yeah, well, I totally judge you. When you're done with Moreau - which I totally haven't read, so I'll see you in the corner - read the first two volumes of LOEG. First is awesome; second is also awesome and briefly but importantly references Moreau.

message 20637: by Felina (new)

Felina I 'read' the audio version read by John Slattery. Fabulous. He should read everything by Stephen King.

message 20638: by Tori (new)

Tori Bryan | 11 comments Not wanting to risk damaging my library's copy of The Hobbit: Or There and Back Again, I took The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society with me to the beach today. I CANNOT put it down! I love epistolary novels and this one is suiting my need for beach reads perfectly!

Cait (caitertot) | 604 comments Felina wrote: "I 'read' the audio version read by John Slattery. Fabulous. He should read everything by Stephen King."

I think he won an Audie Award for that performance. I've been wanting to check it out, as I've only heard good things.

I finished reading Tinkers, which I thought was really good. His writing at times took my breath away. That said, I can understand why some people have given it only one or two stars; it's a highly subjective read. I just think that I was in the right place/time/frame of mind.

Now I'm about 150 pages into The Passage and it (so far) is more than living up to the hype. I'm actually glad it's 700+ pages.

I agree. Haunted is beyond strange, and very cringeworthy.

message 20648: by Petra (new)

Petra I'm still reading Mary. It's a very well-written, fictional account of Mary Todd Lincoln's life. I wonder how much of it is based on hard facts. The book makes Mary out to be witty and lonely.....and Abraham Lincoln quite distant.
I'm also listening to The Coffee Trader during my commutes. The accounting of the Commodities Market in 1600s Amsterdam is interesting. There seems to be hints of a mystery and love interest upcoming as well. So far, I'm enjoying it.

message 20649: by Dana * (new)

Dana * (queenofegypt) I had to put aside From Dead to Worse so I could start The Passage because I only have it for 3 weeks, I don't know if I can make it 700 pages in three weeks!! I have already cried just in 28 pages. I hope it lives up to its hype.

message 20650: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Wayway, cool. I love Gilgamesh. Which translation do you have? I read Stephen Mitchell's.
