Sasha Sometime this summer we should do a little group read of We, Brave New World and 1984.

Dana * (queenofegypt) I have started I Am Not A Serial Killer

very good so far. Reminds me of Dexter.

I'm so in! That sounds like great fun.

F1, I'd be interested in your thoughts on this book. It's on my TBR list as well.

message 19655: by Petra (new)

Petra I started the third Gretchen Lowell book, Evil at Heart. I really enjoyed the first two of this trilogy, especially the first one, Heartsick.

message 19656: by Jayme (last edited May 06, 2010 08:02PM) (new)

Jayme (jayme-reads) If you did as many read-alongs as you thought up, you'd have to quit your day job, Alex. I'd so be in for that too though.

I freakin' loved 1984, you are all crazy not liking it. I still need to read BNW though and We sounds pretty awesome, I'd like to try that out too.

message 19657: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jayme-reads) Speaker for the Dead's pretty good, Bridgit. But it's really weird too. At the end of mine there was an interview with the author where he said that when he wrote Ender's Game he only meant for it to be an introduction to Speaker and that he had no idea Ender would become a classic and Speaker would get so ignored. I guess I kind of get that, the topics are deeper than in Ender...but still, Ender was the better book.

message 19658: by Sasha (new)

Sasha I know Jayme. I get so excited about things. Sigh.

I read 1984 a few summers ago, as it was one of those books that I had never read before, and felt I should have.

I was not impressed with it at all. Just not my cup of tea I suppose. Although I usually LOVE dystopian futuristic books.

message 19662: by Carol (new)

Carol I am a cat remember. Plus born in the year of the rat. I am always at odds with myself.

I just finished a wonderful book of short stories calledTurbo's Very Life And Other Stories. If you like short stories it is very well written.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Just finished a Kathy Reichs, 206 Bones.

message 19664: by Susanna (new)

Susanna (jb_slasher) Made myself finish The Lost Symbol . Really, Dan Brown? I mean, really.

Anyway, was supposed to pick up Skeleton Crew but decided to finally read some Bradbury. The parents have Fahrenheit 451 on their shelf but I'll save it for later and go with A Graveyard for Lunatics: Another Tale of Two Cities .

I also would not mind joining in on Brave New World and We. I didn't enjoy 1984 much but that could have been due to the translation which is why I'll most likely re-read it sometime in the future.

message 19665: by Carol (new)

Carol Hmmmmmmm maybe WE for me also, sounds interesting.

message 19666: by Sasha (new)

Sasha What language did you read it in, Susanna?

message 19667: by Susanna (new)

Susanna (jb_slasher) I read it in Finnish but that particular edition was from 1981 which makes it somewhat outdated language-wise. There are newer translations available but I'll be reading it in English next time.

message 19668: by Liz (new)

Liz I just finished reading The Maze Runner & loved it! I can't wait for the next book in the series to come out. Now I'm off to read Dragonfly in Amber before I have to return it to the library.

message 19669: by Liz (new)

Liz I've recently finished Breaking Dawn and have been working on Brick Lane and a re-read of Dracula.

message 19672: by Lianne (new)

Susanna wrote: "Made myself finish The Lost Symbol. Really, Dan Brown? I mean, really."

Books like TLS? Make me appreciate the good stuff. Deception Point is the only one I haven't read of his books and since it's not part of the Langdon series, I might just be into it. I really enjoyed the technobabble that was Digital Fortress . But DP is not a high TBR priority.

message 19675: by Lori Ann (new)

Lori Ann | 105 comments Yea I love the idea of reading all three books!

Thinker how is The Mystery of Edwin Drood so far? I recently bought the book but haven't started it. I'm somewhat reluctant since it doesn't have an ending but I have a deep love for Dickens so I'm excited nonetheless :)

I'm still trying to get it from the library Janet!! I'm glad you are loving it! I cant wait to read it!

Kat (A Journey In Reading) (ajourneyinreading) I started Someone Knows My Name by Lawrence Hill last night, and had to force myself to put it down at midnight, otherwise I would have stayed up all night reading it............ its really good.

F1Wild and Petra,

I was lucky enough to win this book as a FirstRead. I really loved it. To me this book was a miracle of words. Anchee Min is a gifted writer who skills bring the reader along her journey. The readers are brought through the years, wars and changes in China. While the book may seem to focus on Pearl S Buck, to me the real heroine was that of Willow Lee and her undying dedication to Pearl S Buck.

I have always hated Dickens because of a bad Great Expectations experience in 9th grade. But I've been wanting to try him again. What is your favorite Dickens, one that might get me over the bad taste in my mouth?

I read Mystery of Edwin Drood many years ago. From the writing style, I remember knowing where Dickens left off and the other author (who I can't remember) continued. The story was really good in the Dickens portion and mediocre in the other section. It would have been an excellent story had Dickens finished it. I wonder where he saw it going.

F1 & Marti, thanks! I've reserved the book at the Library. It sounds like something I'd really enjoy.
Marti, how lucky to have won this one. I haven't been lucky in a Giveaway Draw for quite some time now. Congratulations!

message 19684: by Bridgit (new)

Bridgit | 475 comments I finished Speaker for the Dead last night and i liked it. But it didnt sing for me like Enders Game did. I think critically it was probably a much better book. Focused on deeper issues and themes, stronger character development, really much more of an adult book, where Enders Game was a fun, action-thriller that kept you on the edge of your seat, but didnt necessarily give you food for thought. But then again, i dont really care about what the critics think.

Definitely still prefer EG, but liked, and am glad I read SotD. Will likely continue the series at some point, but am more likely to switch over to Ender's Shadow for something closer to the EG feel.

Going down a totally different path with the current book - back to ancient Greece and the Trojan war with Helen of Troy. Just started, so have nothing to say yet, but I really love these sorts of historical fiction biographies. I have high hopes.

message 19685: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Whoa, that's interesting. So it's sortof....like a retelling of the Iliad from Helen's perspective? Weird, but not the worst idea I've ever heard. Be interested to hear your thoughts.

There were several attempts to finish Edwin Drood, the earliest in 1873 by a printer, Thomas James, who claimed to be chanelling Dickens's spirit. That version is known as "the James version".

An interesting take on Dickens and Drood is a fictional piece, Drood, by Dan Simmons.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Suzanne - How about Dombey and Son? It's one of my favorite Dickens.

message 19689: by Janet (new)

Janet I really loved The Secret History by Donna Tartt. But The Little Friend was a whole different experience. It went nowhere and I gave up about halfway through.

Almost as good as Drool in Fool.

Hi Lori Ann,
Actually I'm currently on the 2nd to last chapter, so far I'm enjoying the tale and quite looking forward to the end, I'll write a review when I'm done so you could check it out.
But I was doing some research and realised that before his death Dickens did give his friend and biographer John Forster, I think it is, a summary of the story with an idea of its ending.

message 19698: by Madeline (new)

Madeline | 293 comments I really liked Ender's Shadow Bridgit, I still prefer Ender's Game but the person who recommended both to me liked Shadow better, they're definitely written in the same vein.

I'm adding Helen of Troy to my TBR! I need to get back into historical fiction. I've gone on a fantasy bend lately and feel just about tapped out on the genre for now.
