Hmmm, interesting. That makes sense, in a way. It could explain the outrageous bursts of inappropriate anger and rage that some characters have, two characters are constant drinkers (one of them is violent, too) and there's a sub-plot of horror (which at the moment seems to be a red-herring and not a part of the story). Basically, a little bit "all over the board".
Thanks, Alex. That's an interesting bit of information. So far, it is a decent book.

Sasha :)

That's from his book On Writing, which is actually a really decent book. Toward the end he describes his wicked terrible car accident; it's one of the scariest things he's ever written.

I finished a Russian history book a while ago about the fight against Napoleon and I am reading a very interesting book about the KGB. I have been lucky enough to visit Moscow and its a brilliant place really is. I have read loads of history and culture books about Russia over the years. If you would like we could become friends and share our interest in Russia ?

message 18654: by Jayme (last edited Mar 19, 2010 08:03AM) (new)

Jayme (jayme-reads) I loved On Writing!! I did it in audio book and he read it himself, which I thought was cool. Not what I imagined Stephen King's voice to be like.

message 18655: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Yeah, be friends and then give me book recommendations. I just finished reading the Communist Manifesto, about to start Anna Karenina, and have vague plans to read up on my Russian history at some indeterminate point after that. Happy to take advice on books about the Russian Revolution.

BTW Jason, I'm prob'ly gonna start Civilization: A New History of the Western World tonight. Unless I get distracted by something shinier.

message 18656: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Morning Jayme :) What's his voice like? I imagine it...ah, normal, actually.

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments I finished Carrie by Stephen King and was majorly disappointed by it. Definitely my least favorite King so far. Now I'm reading The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton and am loving it so far. I read The House at Riverton about two years ago and it's one of my favorite books ever so I have high hopes for The Forgotten Garden.

message 18659: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jayme-reads) It's a little higher pitched than I thought it would be, Alex. It's nice though. He actually sounds a little like the narrator from The Wonder Years, if you ever watched that.

message 18660: by Kirstin (new)

Kirstin (ktippie) | 5 comments I loved The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton! And I read Saving Ceecee Hunnicut a couple of weeks ago and really enjoyed it also. I hope you guys enjoy them both.

message 18661: by El (new)

El King's got a nasaly thing going on with his voice. Like Jayme, it's not what I expected either.

(Sorry, that was just a "look at me, look at me" moment. Continue, please.)

message 18662: by Chantelle (new)

Chantelle (chantelle13) | 90 comments I'm struggling with Persuasion and The 19th Wife right now...they're both in slow spots or something. Wanna give me some encouragement? I've got sooo many good books in my TBR pile but I'm delaying my gratification until I finish these two. :)

message 18663: by Jayme (last edited Mar 19, 2010 09:12AM) (new)

Jayme (jayme-reads) Yeah, that's the word I was looking for, El! Nasaly, not hugely so, but it's there.

message 18664: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) | 358 comments It's kind of weird because he's so tall, you expect a more Herman Munster-type voice, and instead you get, I don't know, Mortimer Snodgrass.

message 18665: by Paula (new)

Paula | 1098 comments Liz, I've read all but the final 2 or 3 in the Mitford series. The first one was slow for me as well but they pick up. Some are better than others, I just finished "In This Mountain" and it was one of the just ok ones for me. I space these out a lot because of that.

I just nominated The Forgotten Garden for another book club I belong to. It sounds so good - I hope it gets chosen because I need an excuse to go out & buy it before finishing my tbr books that I already own.

That's encouraging because even though I'm enjoying the book more, I still don't understand all the hype my mom & sister give it. I'm going to have to space the books out too or I might lose my mind - I need more of a page turner b/w them.

message 18668: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 310 comments finished Desperation by Stephen King. Still working on A Thousand Splendid Suns

message 18669: by Paula (new)

Paula | 1098 comments I'm not as crazy about them Liz as other people either. Some are more enjoyable than others and I like hearing more about the people in Mitford.

Suzanne (suz1229) | 11 comments It's not you. I felt the same way, but then I really got into it. I have about 20 pages to go.

message 18671: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Finished Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak last night and Fanny Hill, or Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure by John Cleland this morning. Hopefully, I'll find time to review them both later.

Currently snuggled up with Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Finished My Life in France, by Julia Child, and really, really liked it.

Hi Chantelle -I'm reading (almost finished) with The 19th Wife and it does seem to go slow in some places. I actually am enjoying the storyline of Ann Eliza Young better than the modern day murder mystery, for some reason. To me the book is sort of a history lesson in Mormonism and how it all began, but I think its interesting and enjoyable at the same time. Not a WOW book, but good. If its totally boring you though, move on --- life is too short!!!!

message 18674: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne (suz1229) | 11 comments I have been fortunate enough to visit St. Petersburg and was so enthralled by all its history. I read Peter the Great by Robert Massie before I took the trip and it made seeing St. Petersburg even more exciting. I also read his book, Nicholas and Alexandra and I have A Russiah Diary by Anna Politkovskaya on my bookshelf.

message 18675: by Leanna (new)

Leanna (leannerd) | 73 comments Finished Great Expectations by Charles Dickens and hated it. I had to read it for a class and was pretty excited about it actually, but I think the combination of my hatred for Pip and having to spend my Spring Break reading it made it really not enjoyable.

I also finished Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll recently and loved it as much as I did the first time around. I went and saw the movie twice last week, so I was really feeling the need to read the book again. I'm currently reading Through the Looking Glass, which I've never read before, and loving it. It totally makes up for the disaster that was Great Expectations.

El, The Maze Runner is a very popular book. I've been on the waiting list at the Library for about 3 months or so and I'm still about 19th in line.

Hey everyone, so many interesting and great books being cracked open this week!!!!

I just finished David Simspon's Post-Human - I am still working out the review for it, so check back later. He wrote an interesting future in which the Artifical Intelligence people created to make their lives better ends up attempting to kill them off...

Im about to begin Don't Smell The Floss which is a collection of short stories.

message 18684: by Maria (new)

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments i don't remember what the last book i posted about was, but i've finished The Little Giant of Aberdeen County and Remember Me in the last week or so. i also started The City The City this week. that's slow going reading, both because of the storyline and because i have some construction going on in my house. hoping to get some read this week though!

message 18685: by Liz (last edited Mar 20, 2010 01:47PM) (new)

Liz I just finished At Home in Mitford by Jan Karon. I gave it 3 stars.
It started out slow, but as I got to the know the characters, I liked it more & more. There were so many that I loved hearing about: Dooley, Puny, Miss Rose & Uncle Billy, Cynthia, & of course, Father Tim. This book didn't grab me like many others have, but it was well written & full of inspiring tidbits. I'll have to hold off before reading the rest in this series. I need something a little more "I-just-can't-put-it-down" before I can settle into another slow read.

I am getting ready to start A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray. I hope it's faster paced than the Mitford series.

I don't think I'll get it in time for this one but maybe for the Summer Challenge. I am curious about this book. Not only does it sound like an interesting story, it's got a very, very long Request Queue.

message 18688: by Flora (new)

Kate (kshiv) | 27 comments I have been sucked into these Black Dagger Brotherhood books. They are goofy and the covers are embarassing. I could definately not read them in public. I'm hooked. I have to know what happens in the rest of them. I guess it's kind of a substitute until the new Sookie book comes out. No, I just like them.

message 18691: by Maria (new)

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments Liz, AGATB is pretty good, but kinda cheesey. it does move fairly quickly, so you should get through it no problem. i've read the first 2, still haven't tracked down the 3rd in the series yet. if i never get to it, i won't be hearbroken, so that gives you some kind of idea on the books.

message 18692: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly I'm reading Elephant Song by Wilbur Smith. My Uncle has been telling me to read his books for years (since I was 13). I'm finding it to be yet another amazing read. Its slower going though than the other books I've read lately. I've only gotten to 227 in the past 2 days so I'm hoping to get to or past 300 tonight.

message 18693: by F1Wild (new)
