What are you reading?
I'm not as crazy about them Liz as other people either. Some are more enjoyable than others and I like hearing more about the people in Mitford.
Finished Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak last night and Fanny Hill, or Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure by John Cleland this morning. Hopefully, I'll find time to review them both later.Currently snuggled up with Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout.
Chantelle wrote: "I'm struggling with Persuasion and The 19th Wife right now...they're both in slow spots or something. Wanna give me some encouragement? I've got sooo many good books in m..."Hi Chantelle -I'm reading (almost finished) with The 19th Wife and it does seem to go slow in some places. I actually am enjoying the storyline of Ann Eliza Young better than the modern day murder mystery, for some reason. To me the book is sort of a history lesson in Mormonism and how it all began, but I think its interesting and enjoyable at the same time. Not a WOW book, but good. If its totally boring you though, move on --- life is too short!!!!
I have been fortunate enough to visit St. Petersburg and was so enthralled by all its history. I read Peter the Great by Robert Massie before I took the trip and it made seeing St. Petersburg even more exciting. I also read his book, Nicholas and Alexandra and I have A Russiah Diary by Anna Politkovskaya on my bookshelf.
Finished Great Expectations by Charles Dickens and hated it. I had to read it for a class and was pretty excited about it actually, but I think the combination of my hatred for Pip and having to spend my Spring Break reading it made it really not enjoyable. I also finished Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll recently and loved it as much as I did the first time around. I went and saw the movie twice last week, so I was really feeling the need to read the book again. I'm currently reading Through the Looking Glass, which I've never read before, and loving it. It totally makes up for the disaster that was Great Expectations.
Am currently reading Stieg Larsson's The Girl Who Played with Fire and it's pretty intriguing so far, I can't seem to put it down, lol xD
I am reading 'A rose for the Anzac boys' for school, and my sister is read 'Tales from the good land'.
FINALLY finished The Historian. Now I can focus on finishing The Fatal Eggs and Other Soviet Satire 1918-1963 and The Maze Runner. I can also focus on getting my life back after reading the time-suck known as The Historian. Whew.

Petra, so far it's pretty interesting. Are you waiting to read it for the Seasonal Challenge? That's why I picked it up.
Hey everyone, so many interesting and great books being cracked open this week!!!!
I just finished David Simspon's Post-Human - I am still working out the review for it, so check back later. He wrote an interesting future in which the Artifical Intelligence people created to make their lives better ends up attempting to kill them off...
Im about to begin Don't Smell The Floss which is a collection of short stories.

i don't remember what the last book i posted about was, but i've finished The Little Giant of Aberdeen County and Remember Me in the last week or so. i also started The City The City this week. that's slow going reading, both because of the storyline and because i have some construction going on in my house. hoping to get some read this week though!
I just finished At Home in Mitford by Jan Karon. I gave it 3 stars. It started out slow, but as I got to the know the characters, I liked it more & more. There were so many that I loved hearing about: Dooley, Puny, Miss Rose & Uncle Billy, Cynthia, & of course, Father Tim. This book didn't grab me like many others have, but it was well written & full of inspiring tidbits. I'll have to hold off before reading the rest in this series. I need something a little more "I-just-can't-put-it-down" before I can settle into another slow read.
I am getting ready to start A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray. I hope it's faster paced than the Mitford series.
I have just started reading Andrea Carter and the Trouble with Treasure by Susan K Marlow (first reads book).
El wrote: "Petra, so far it's pretty interesting. Are you waiting to read it for the Seasonal Challenge? That's why I picked it up."I don't think I'll get it in time for this one but maybe for the Summer Challenge. I am curious about this book. Not only does it sound like an interesting story, it's got a very, very long Request Queue.
I've just started reading Go Down Together, the bio of Bonnie and Clyde. I haven't gotten very far into it yet but so far its very interesting
I am reading so many different series.. i cant find some of the books in some of them so i just pick up another one that happens to be a series.. well i'm reading:The Vampire Diaries(there is another one coming out that i havent read yet)
The House of Night series(cant find the fifth book-Hunted)
The Immortals series(shadowland just came out but i cant afford it)
Nightworld(just started it)
and the Evernight series(the last book is called Hourglass and i have no idea where it is)
if you want the authors to these books let me know and i will give the names to you
I have been sucked into these Black Dagger Brotherhood books. They are goofy and the covers are embarassing. I could definately not read them in public. I'm hooked. I have to know what happens in the rest of them. I guess it's kind of a substitute until the new Sookie book comes out. No, I just like them.
Liz, AGATB is pretty good, but kinda cheesey. it does move fairly quickly, so you should get through it no problem. i've read the first 2, still haven't tracked down the 3rd in the series yet. if i never get to it, i won't be hearbroken, so that gives you some kind of idea on the books.
I'm reading Elephant Song by Wilbur Smith. My Uncle has been telling me to read his books for years (since I was 13). I'm finding it to be yet another amazing read. Its slower going though than the other books I've read lately. I've only gotten to 227 in the past 2 days so I'm hoping to get to or past 300 tonight.
In thanks to The Book Ref's decision, I am anxiously starting Moloka'i by Alan Brennert tonight. I hear it is a great read and of a subject matter unlike any other I've read before. I can't wait to start!
Alex wrote: "Petra, Stephen King says that Cujo was written during the worst of his alcoholism and he doesn't remember anything about writing it. Weird, huh? It's a decent book."Definately a weird guy too!

I am reading The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters. It is an okay read, but I find the pace a bit slow. I hope it'll pick up soon.
SillySuzy wrote: "I am reading The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters. It is an okay read, but I find the pace a bit slow. I hope it'll pick up soon."Stick with it, its worth it !!! I am a Mega Sarah Waters fan she is sooooooooo coooooool !!!!
Just started Martha Quest: A Novel by Doris Lessing today. I'm only getting to Chapter 3, but so far I'm loving it.
Mary wrote: "Oh I loved Moloka'i!"I started Moloka'i by Alan Brennert at around 1am and had to pull myself away at 4am. So far it's awesome!!

Moloka'i was a wonderful story. I read it for an in person book group and we all loved it. It is a book that keeps being mentioned again and again by the group.
I finished The Wives of Henry Oades and found the ending interesting. Having trouble letting it go.Moving on to Evidence. Always love the mystery.
I thought I had already posted this, but I don't see it on the board. I am reading Not for Packrats Only by Don Aslett. I am moving soon and am trying to get rid of some of my clutter. Don is the master of decluttering. I am learning from the best in the business.
I'm on a Dan Brown kick read Angels & Demons last week and started Da Vinci Code yesterday I'm about 200 pages in and I know I like A&D better but we'll see
Jason, I am interested in all things Russian: what book are you reading ? Kirsty, that is NOT an easy book, but I liked it very much; hope you like it too.
I just finished The Birth Of Venus by Sarah Dunant & while the story was intriguing & well paced, I did not enjoy it as much as the other books I've read by her.I started Brian Selznick's The Invention of Hugo Cabret yesterday and LOVE it.
I'm on last pages of The Stars Look Down by A.J. Cronin. It is really interesting and sad book about hard life of mine workers.
Lori Ann, Atonement is McEwan's masterpiece IMHO... I've read other books by him too; no terms of comparison... I absolutely LOVE this book, and when it first came out, it was in all lists of best books, from 100 best to the 5 best books read...You are probably reading one of the BEST books you will ever read, so enjoy it !
Just finishedThe Birth House by Ami McKay this morning. Hoping to start something tonight, but packing for upcoming move might take up all the time.
Gorana wrote: "Yesterday I finished Shutter Island and started Half of a Yellow Sun."Such a wide spectrum. How did you like Half of a Yellow Sun?

I just nominated The Forgotten Garden for another book club I belong to. It sounds so good - I hope it gets chosen because I need an excuse to go out & buy it before finishing my tbr books that I already own.

That's encouraging because even though I'm enjoying the book more, I still don't understand all the hype my mom & sister give it. I'm going to have to space the books out too or I might lose my mind - I need more of a page turner b/w them.
