message 18553: by Aleksandra (new)

Aleksandra (aleksandrakonwa) i finished "shattered dreams" by Irene Spencer. I loved it :) and reading now Kartography by Kamila Shamshie.

It's a very good book. One of my favorite James Patterson books. Always keeps you guessing. Enjoy.

message 18556: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Hey Liz! I read Gulliver's Travels in January. I thought it sortof lost steam as it went, but it's worth it. How're you liking it?

message 18557: by Alisha Marie (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments I finished The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon by Stephen King last night and even though there were a few things that bugged, I thought it was a pretty good and quick read. Now I'm going to start After Life by Jaron Lee Knuth. I'm in the mood for some zombie mayhem...

message 18558: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jayme-reads) Started The Woman in White on audio yesterday. It's 25 hours long! I'm about 2 or 3 hours in and really enjoying it so far. I think I'm glad I'm not reading it in print though.

I also finished a couple of graphic novels: Marvel Illustrated: Picture Of Dorian Gray Premiere HC and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. Both were really good. Especially the Dark Knight, 5*'s!

message 18559: by Bhumi (new)

Bhumi | 524 comments 25 hours seems like an incredibly long time. What is the average time for a decent-sized audiobook? Usually I just read the hard copies.

message 18560: by Jayme (last edited Mar 14, 2010 11:06AM) (new)

Jayme (jayme-reads) They're usually about 30 pages an hour. So most books being about 300 pages long take about 10 hours.

There's my math post in honour of pi day. Happy pi day everyone!

Thanks Matthew, I'm having a real hard time putting it down (Along Came a Spider)!

message 18562: by Carol (last edited Mar 14, 2010 11:12AM) (new)

Carol I just finished the hard copy of The Woman In White. I loved it. Some of the language was a bit dated, but a good book. I ordered Moonstone to read soon.

Liz Alex wrote: "Hey Liz! I read Gulliver's Travels in January. I thought it sortof lost steam as it went, but it's worth it. How're you liking it?"
I'm enjoying it. At times I get tired of reading all description and zero dialogue, but it's good otherwise.

Brooke | 44 comments I am currently reading Middlesex. I am only over 100 pages into it. I am curious to what everyone thought of this one!

message 18565: by Becky (new)

Becky (munchkinland_farm) Cutting for Stone by A. Vergese

message 18566: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Brooke, Middlesex is one of my very favorite books ever. I think it's brilliant. We've debated it a bit over on the Thread of Dire Judgment, though; opinions vary widely on that one.

Carol Alex wrote: "Brooke, Middlesex is one of my very favorite books ever. I think it's brilliant. We've debated it a bit over on the Thread of Dire Judgment, though; opinions vary widely on that one."

Alex are you reading The Prince-Niccolò Machiavelli? I just started The Prince Of The Marshes and other occupational hazards of a year in Iraq. It appears to draw on The Prince.

message 18568: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Not yet, Carol. I'm about halfway through King Leopold's Ghost: A Story of Greed, Terror, and Heroism in Colonial Africa. Then it's on to The Prince.

BTW I saw that link you posted elsewhere about the Texas board of education. Good lord.

message 18569: by Carol (new)

Carol I know that is so scary. But as Ne says it is a very conservative state.

Brooke, I thoroughly enjoyed every page of Middlesex. It's so textured and layered. I'm looking forward to reading your thoughts on the book once you're done.

Tracy (mamallama) | 130 comments I have started One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd. I think I may have spoiled it for myself by reading a negative review before I started. I hope not. I am enjoying it so far, but I'm not very deep into it, yet.

I'm not sure, Chantel..."

I just finished Wench and I liked it. Part I or the first 80 pages it is a bit confusing - too many characters/stories to follow. Part II mainly focuses on one character (Lizzie) after that the book really picked up for me.

I didn't even know there was a sequel, have to add that to the queue!

As if I didn't have enough going on, I decided that I would concentrate on reading The Girl with Glass Feet.

Intriguing so far...

Linda | 887 comments Just finished The Postmistress by Sarah Blake last night and gave it a 5. I loved the way it was divided between America's pre-entry into WWII and the early war in Europe. I recently read, No Ordinary Time by Doris Kearns Goodwin, the story of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt and our entry into WWII. The Postmistress reminded me of the feelings expressed on both sides and the lack of understanding (and personal agendas) between the U.S. and Europe at the time.

Bloodroot

Also I finish Everything Matters!: A Novel which is one of the smartest books that I have read in a long time.

Mary (madamefifi) | 358 comments I'm reading The Lady in the Tower by Alison Weir. It's about the fall of Anne Boleyn. I really enjoy Ms. Weir's books, she seems to be a meticulous researcher and whenever possible quotes directly from the papers and letters of witnesses to the events she is describing. She also doesn't go in for any baseless speculation (which can be frustrating in her books about historical figures of whom little is known---Eleanor of Aquitaine for example).

Having recently read Wolf Hall, I'm finding Ms. Weir's frequent referrences to Thomas Cromwell especially interesting. So far Ms. Mantel's fictional characterization and Ms. Weir's historical portrayal seem to match up quite well.

message 18600: by Alisha Marie (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments I finished After Life by Jaron Lee Knuth and thought it was just okay. There were some good zombie moments, but overall I thought it could've been better.

Now, I'm at a lost as to what to read. Too many choices. I'm just going to watch a couple of zombie movies and then get back to it.
