Very enjoyable novel 22 though its hard to follow at times in your head, with its surreal and anarchic humour, though I suppose thats the point of it.

message 18402: by Petra (new)

Petra I'll be finishing Gods Behaving Badly: A Novel tonight and then continuing with Sweetheart, the second Gretchen Lowell mystery.

Ana, you are stronger than I! I tryed to read that dang novel twice and couldnt get more than 40-some odd pages in .... I still own it, so maybe, just maybe, someday...

message 18406: by Carol (last edited Mar 08, 2010 05:54PM) (new)

Carol I liked catch 22, but that was years ago. I picked it up recently and though why did I like it. No I will not re-read it and you can't make me.

message 18407: by Bhumi (new)

Bhumi | 524 comments I own the book but haven't read it yet. Maybe I should try...

message 18408: by Carol (new)

Carol If you do let me know. I don't want to read it, but I would be interested in what you think.

message 18409: by Liz (new)

Liz I enjoyed Catch 22. I read it in high school and at the time it was not a quick read for me but it was funny!

message 18410: by Tonya (new)

Tonya (nyab2000) | 49 comments I've always wanted to read Catch 22. I plan to attempt it but right now I have too many other books pulling at me. I'm ready to start Brother Odd by Dean Koontz and Speaker for the Dead by Orson scott Card. I also have The Gunslinger and The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy calling my name. So many books...so little time!

message 18411: by Carol (new)

Carol I am reading The Woman In White-Wilkie Collins. It is deliciously chilling.

message 18412: by Petra (new)

Petra Carol, I really enjoyed Woman In White. It's gothically wonderful.
Another Wilkie Collins book that I enjoyed is The Moonstone.

message 18413: by Carol (new)

Carol So I understand . Over in Constant Reader there is an archive discussion for Moonstone. I will check it out when I read it. I want to totally absorb this one first. They are trying to find the woman who delivered the letter to Laura. They are in the graveyard.

I also read Hot Zone at least 10 years ago and really liked it. It was hard to put down.

message 18416: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Mm, I've heard great stuff about Hot Zone. Its author, Richard Preston, also wrote The Wild Trees: A Story of Passion and Daring, which is pretty exciting for a book about trees, and edited my favorite in the Best American Science and Nature Writing series (2007).

Lori wrote: "Ana, you are stronger than I! I tryed to read that dang novel twice and couldnt get more than 40-some odd pages in .... I still own it, so maybe, just maybe, someday..." WE CAN DO IT!

LOL CAROL

Bhumi - Oh I will I'll come back and complain or encourage you all to read or re-read it

Thanks Liz I'm going to give it my full attention today. I'm sure it won't be my favorite book but I have to give it a chance.

Linda, I love her books. I've read most of them. Some of her books are part of a series about a group of female lawyers.

message 18420: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Ames | 8 comments Just finished reading Make Room! Make Room! by Harry Harrison for a scifi module at uni. Thought it was a fantastic imagining of the future, and to me felt so close in some ways to the present day.

Unfortunately, due to uni commitments, I find I can't let myself get too engrossed in books for pleasure, else I wouldn't get any work done whatsoever! As such, I'm currently reading a book of short stories, The Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri.

message 18421: by Charity (last edited Mar 09, 2010 07:33AM) (new)

Charity (charityross) Alex, I felt the same about Saramago's Seeing. I rushed right out to get it the day it was published, but as of now, almost 4 years later, I have yet to finish it. Maybe someday.

I'm about at the halfway mark in Doctor Zhivago and I just started reading Fanny Hill, or Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure.

message 18422: by FromAna (new)

FromAna (fromanam) oh Doctor Zhivago is next on my list how is it?

message 18423: by Charity (last edited Mar 09, 2010 07:39AM) (new)

Charity (charityross) Hmmm, well, I found it hard to get into at first (compared to other Russian works), but I'm having a much easier time now. As much as I loathe to say it, I might actually prefer the movie (w/ Omar Sharif) to the book. The book isn't bad at all, but the movie is better.

message 18424: by Carol (new)

Carol Sometimes books work better if you see the movie first. You can visualize the scenes as you are reading.

message 18425: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (mamallama) | 130 comments I just started Ford County. I am looking forward to something I can read in little spurts for a bit. This fits the bill.

message 18428: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) I am reading Shutter Island. I am really enjoying it. I need to finish it before the weekend so we can go see it at the movies.

I have not read this thread in a while and some people were talking about Jodi Picoult book's last week. I have read Nineteen Minutes, The Pact: A Love Story and My Sister's Keeper. I needed to take a break from those heavy topics and I read Talk of the Town. It was a kindle freebie about a month ago and it was a pleasant change. I have several other Picoult books already downloaded and ready to read.

Chantelle (chantelle13) | 90 comments I'm trying to figure out what to read next. None of my current reads are speaking to me...lol. Maybe 19th Wife but I left it in the car. I finished Honolulu by Alan Brennert yesterday and loved it. I have two separate orders from Amazon coming in the next few days...hm. What to read, what to read.

Ashley Frazier (uofmash) | 42 comments I'm reading The Hunger Games and can't put it down. I started reading on my lunch break which was a mistake because then the second half of the day I get nothing done. I'll definitely finish it today.

message 18443: by Chantelle (new)

Chantelle (chantelle13) | 90 comments Ashley, it's so good!

I just ordered the sequel from amazon, should be here today or tomorrow - I'm so excited!

message 18444: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Lour I'm reading several but also started Watchmen. It's the only graphic novel on the 1001 books list and I've never really read comics or graphic novels so its definitely a big change for me. I'm about 30 pages in and I'm enjoying it but I don't see me switching from novels to graphic novels anytime soon. I was really surprised to see it on the list though.

Hi Brenda - I noticed you were asking about The 19th Wife. I'm reading it and loving it. Its very good. It switches between modern day and the early days of the Morman church.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Well, I've got several books going, but they're all rather "heavy," and I'm sick. So I'll likely be picking something else up. Maybe some historical fiction.

message 18450: by Carol (last edited Mar 10, 2010 10:55AM) (new)

Carol Susanna Hope you are not seriously ill. Feel better soon.
