I'll have to check that one out, Alex (The Wild Trees). I'm still reading The 19th Wife and really liking it alot.

FromAna (fromanam) Thanks Beth :)

LOL CAROL

Bhumi - Oh I will I'll come back and complain or encourage you all to read or re-read it

Thanks Liz I'm going to give it my full attention today. I'm sure it won't be my favorite book but I have to give it a chance.

Linda, I love her books. I've read most of them. Some of her books are part of a series about a group of female lawyers.

Melissa Ames | 8 comments Just finished reading Make Room! Make Room! by Harry Harrison for a scifi module at uni. Thought it was a fantastic imagining of the future, and to me felt so close in some ways to the present day.

Unfortunately, due to uni commitments, I find I can't let myself get too engrossed in books for pleasure, else I wouldn't get any work done whatsoever! As such, I'm currently reading a book of short stories, The Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri.

message 18405: by Charity (last edited Mar 09, 2010 07:33AM) (new)

Charity (charityross) Alex, I felt the same about Saramago's Seeing. I rushed right out to get it the day it was published, but as of now, almost 4 years later, I have yet to finish it. Maybe someday.

I'm about at the halfway mark in Doctor Zhivago and I just started reading Fanny Hill, or Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure.

message 18406: by FromAna (new)

FromAna (fromanam) oh Doctor Zhivago is next on my list how is it?

message 18407: by Charity (last edited Mar 09, 2010 07:39AM) (new)

Charity (charityross) Hmmm, well, I found it hard to get into at first (compared to other Russian works), but I'm having a much easier time now. As much as I loathe to say it, I might actually prefer the movie (w/ Omar Sharif) to the book. The book isn't bad at all, but the movie is better.

message 18408: by Carol (new)

Carol Sometimes books work better if you see the movie first. You can visualize the scenes as you are reading.

Tracy (mamallama) | 130 comments I just started Ford County. I am looking forward to something I can read in little spurts for a bit. This fits the bill.

message 18412: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) I am reading Shutter Island. I am really enjoying it. I need to finish it before the weekend so we can go see it at the movies.

I have not read this thread in a while and some people were talking about Jodi Picoult book's last week. I have read Nineteen Minutes, The Pact: A Love Story and My Sister's Keeper. I needed to take a break from those heavy topics and I read Talk of the Town. It was a kindle freebie about a month ago and it was a pleasant change. I have several other Picoult books already downloaded and ready to read.

I wouldn't mind rereading the historian myself. I liked the book a lot!

I finished Honolulu by Alan Brennert yesterday and loved it. I have two separate orders from Amazon coming in the next few days...hm. What to read, what to read.

Ashley Frazier (uofmash) | 42 comments I'm reading The Hunger Games and can't put it down. I started reading on my lunch break which was a mistake because then the second half of the day I get nothing done. I'll definitely finish it today.

message 18427: by Chantelle (new)

Chantelle (chantelle13) | 90 comments Ashley, it's so good!

I just ordered the sequel from amazon, should be here today or tomorrow - I'm so excited!

message 18428: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Lour I'm reading several but also started Watchmen. It's the only graphic novel on the 1001 books list and I've never really read comics or graphic novels so its definitely a big change for me. I'm about 30 pages in and I'm enjoying it but I don't see me switching from novels to graphic novels anytime soon. I was really surprised to see it on the list though.

Hi Brenda - I noticed you were asking about The 19th Wife. I'm reading it and loving it. Its very good. It switches between modern day and the early days of the Morman church.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Well, I've got several books going, but they're all rather "heavy," and I'm sick. So I'll likely be picking something else up. Maybe some historical fiction.

message 18440: by Liz (new)

Liz Feel better soon, Susanna!

message 18441: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Dude, I just looked up Civilization: A New History of the Western World and it looks awesome. I love this kind of thing. I'm totally psyched to read that.

The very positive NY Times review says it doesn't feel like the dreaded List of Names and Dates; do you agree? That's my one fear.

Does it mention important literature from the periods it covers? That'd be cool.

message 18442: by Dara (new)

Dara | 88 comments I am reading Shutter Island and trying to get it finished so I can start Jodi Picoult's new novel, House Rules. Went to her book signing in Schaumburg, IL last night...LOVE HER!

message 18443: by Jason (new)

Jason Clay (goodreadscomwillshakespeare) | 66 comments There are no list of names it tries to cover each period in as much depth as it can. It will pick out men from each period and cover them in depth and give a review of the general period.
It mentions some of the great writers from each period, obviously you get more writers the nearer to the present day you get to.

message 18444: by Sasha (new)

Sasha This is why this site is great, Jason. I am embarrassingly pumped to read that book.

Luna I loved Beastly! I thought it was so great and ended up reading it in one sitting. I heard they're making a movie out of it with Vanessa Hudgens and one of the Olsen Twins. I'm skipping that...
