I really loved Firefly Lane.....thought it was one of her best books.

Rene | 49 comments Marti, Firefly Lane was one of my favorites! Great story and very endearing characters that take you on a great journey, especially if you grew up in the 80's and 90's.

message 18204: by Writerlibrarian (new)

Writerlibrarian I've been MIA this February. I read some but not as much as usual. We upgraded the software at the library on the 1rd and well, it's not really working on the 28th. You can imagine the rest.

I'm beginning March with Everything Is Illuminated. I'm still reading my way through Eastern Europe for the AtWi80 challenge.

message 18205: by Petra (new)

Petra I'm really enjoying Set This House in Order: A Romance of Souls. Living with so many "souls" in one body (split personality) is odd. Breakfast time is amusing. I'm enjoying the style and flow of the story. It's well thought out and interesting. Wonder if Matt Ruff knew anyone with a split personality himself? He certainly seems to have it laid out logically and well.

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments I finished Happy Birthday or Whatever: Track Suits, Kim Chee, and Other Family Disasters by Annie Choi last night and loved it! I thought it was hilarious.

Now I'm going to start reading The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox. This book has had mixed reviews so I hope I like it.

I am reading her latest book, Winter Garden. It is good, I am about 1/2 way through it. I was sooo disappointed on Feb 9th I was supposed to go up to the Chicago Suburbs (Naperville to be exact) for her book signing tour for this book I am reading but didn't make it due to the weather. The most frustrating part of it is that I LOVE the snow and we NEVER get what they predict, we always get cheated. So naturally that one day we got all the snow and the blowing and drifting. Grrrrr....then to add insult to injury I saw on Kristin Hannahs website last week that Susan Elizabeth Phillips showed up for the signing as well. She is another author I just absolutely love and apparently they are friends. Susan lives in the Chicago area. Just my luck!

message 18208: by Rene (new)

Rene | 49 comments Dara, I am reading Winter Garden too and for some reason it has not grabbed me like her other books. Sorry you missed her signing. Sounds just like life!

Marti (marjay) | 985 comments Glad to know others like Kristin Hannah too. I am on the waiting list for Winter Garden and it is a long list. 8>(

Tomorrow, I go back to work and will have to cut the amount of reading down, although I did not read as much this vacation due to my Mom and visiting her, but...

Mahum *It's Summer!!!!* (madaboutmusic) | 65 comments That stinks... I hate working

message 18216: by F1Wild (new)

F1Wild I just started reading The Postmistress by Sarah Blake (particularly because of The Help's Kathryn Stockett's recommendation) and it's seems great right from the start - however, I've taken medication for my back which makes me quite loopy and it's killing me not to be able to read more quickly.
The Postmistress by Sarah Blake

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) | 501 comments I just started reading One Amazing Thing by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni

message 18219: by Rene (new)

Rene | 49 comments Mahum: Winter Garden is about the lives of two sisters and their parents. The mom is Russian and has never shown any maternal instinct whatsoever to her children. The Dad loved them unconditionally and showed his love often. The story line is about why the mom is the way she is. I am going to finish it and maybe my opinion will change. I hope so. I loved Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah.

message 18220: by Brooke (new)

Brooke | 44 comments I am currently reading Nineteen Minutes. It is pretty good so far. I have read Mercy and My Sister's Keeper in the past. Any other Jodi Picoult recommendations?

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments I finished THE LACUNA by Barbara Kingsoliver and gave it 2 stars. It was a very hard book to get into. Now am going to try again THE GIRL WITH TEH DRAGON TATTOO. Could no really get into it before.

I loved Nineteen Minutes....I think it's a book that every high school student and teacher should have to read. I really liked Handle With Care and The Perfect Match by her also. And Change of Heart...I love her books....can't wait for her new one to come out on March 2nd!

message 18223: by Rene (new)

message 18224: by Alisha Marie (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments Finished The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox by Maggie O' Farrell and thought it was a great book and a page-turner, but the ending just fizzled out a bit.

I've just picked up 3 Willows: The Sisterhood Grows by Ann Brashares. I loved The Sisterhood of Traveling Pants series in high school, so I have high hopes for this one.

The only books I've read by her are Keeping Faith, My Sister's Keeper, Vanishing Acts and The Tenth Circle, but out of those I would recommend Keeping Faith. I'd like to read more by her.
I always feel like there's some big ethical question which she leaves for her readers at the end of her novels, never answering it. However, in some cases it almost seems like instead she'll make very strong attempts to manipulate readers' emotions (okay, so I'm mainly thinking of My Sister's Keeper here), so I have a like/dislike relationship with her work (I would say love/hate but that's a bit strong).

I'm now reading Venetia Kelly's traveling show by Frank Delaney. His book Ireland was one of my favorites.

message 18234: by Claire (new)

Claire (clairebear8) | 514 comments I'm still reading and enjoying The 19th Wife. Its a slow read for me (didn't get to read this past weekend) but its not because its not pulling me in. There are two storylines in the book, one about the founding of the Morman Church and polygamy (and how, even though the early church practiced polygamy, they no longer endorse it in any way)----the second storyline is about a modern day sect that has broken away from the original Morman church and a murder mystery in this sect. Its very good and educational about the foundings of the Latter Day Saints church.

Lori Ann | 105 comments I finished The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher: Murder and the Undoing of a Great Victorian Detectiveand I really really liked it. She made constant references to Poe, Dickens, Collins etc., all of whom are favorite authors of mine. It was very interesting to see how a true crime influenced many Victorian mystery writers.

I am now beginning Breakfast at Tiffany's!

message 18237: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Oh cool, Lori Ann! I put that on my reading list, probably thanks to you, but then someone else said they didn't love it so I decided to wait to hear how you liked it. I love the subject.

I finally got started on the Dark Materials Trilogy and so far I am really enjoying it altho that could always change.

Hi Brooke,

I've got and read all of Picoult's books, there is only a couple that I wasn't too keen on. Handle With Care is very good...The Pact is another that sticks in mind.
Hope that's some help!
