Michelle♥ Shutter Island is awesome! I loved that book and couldn't put it down! It's not so much scary, but just really rivetingly suspenseful.

A definite FIVE STAR read.

Shutter Island was a true suspense novel with twists and turns. I DO NOT like scary books and I too thought the commercials looked scary HOWEVER I could not put the book down. I was reading more than once later into the night then I should have.

Rene | 49 comments Thanks so much for your replies about Shutter Island. It is a definite buy! Now I can't hardly wait!!

Is it out yet here in the states?

Now I'm starting on We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson and A Moveable Feast by Hemingway.

How is Haroun? I picked it up from the library not too long ago.

Stephanie | 413 comments I decided to start Impossible. I am intrigued by the fact that it is somewhat based off the Simon & Garfunkel song Scarborough Fair. I have loved that song since I was a small child and I'm excited to see how it ties into the story.

message 18013: by Alton (new)

Alton | 1 comments Reading Middlemarch now for a talk being held in April at Symphony Space here in NYC. Gave myself more then enough time to finish unlike my partying days in college where I never made it past page 100. Should be fun-Jennifer Egan, Siri Hustvedt, and Margot Livesey are leading the discussion and I am definitely enjoying it better this time around.

message 18015: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jayme-reads) I finished Stephen King's On Writing today while I was stuck in traffic. It was super awesome. Really neat to here so much about him starting out as an author and even the more technical parts weren't really technical, more like a story about how being an author works. Anyway, 'nough blabbing.

Now I'm thinking I'll finally pick up Under the Dome for a little more Stephen King Action.

message 18016: by Maria (new)

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments i finished What I Did for Love from Susan Elizabeth Phillips last night. total chic book, but a nice light and quick read.

i started a book given to me my a co-worker, it's called Jane Bites Back from Michael Thomas Ford. it's about Jane Austen living in our time, but she's a vampire. kinda different, but good so far. i'll start The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo when i finish this one.

Rach (rachlovestv) | 104 comments I am 75% through Byatt's The Children's Book, and was hoping to finish it today, but it's just so long! Parts of it I am loving, but other parts are tedious and many too literary for me, I think. It's definitely not a skimmer - the language is too rich and dense for that.

message 18020: by Alisha Marie (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments I finished reading Matilda by Roald Dahl yesterday and I thought it was cute. I liked it, but I have to say that I loved the movie a little bit more. I think mostly because the movie was such a part of my childhood as I watched it like five times a week.

I've now started Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill and it's starting to get immensely creepy. Hopefully it stays that way.

Re: Heart Shaped Box--it will. I loved that book. Did it as an audio and I was totally creeped out during my commute. I used to read all of S. King's horror stuff in HS for a good scare, and Heart-shaped box gave me the same feeling. So did S. King's Cell, if you're looking for another true horror (King wrote this one recently and it reminds me a lot of his 80s horrors, but less "out there").

Anybody have input on Under the Dome?

I'm reading The Darkest Evening of the Year right now, but I'm not very far into it.

Carol I am reading BLOOD MERIDIAN-CORMAC McCARTHY. Do all his books possess such violent behavior and tragic journeys? I didn't particularly like THE ROAD either. I am just about 50 pages in, it is disturbing .

I am the first to admit that while I have been a Stephen King devotee over the years, I find that some of his novels leave me cold or at least lukewarm in their endings. That being said, Under the Dome is not one of these. I thought the story was strong from beginning to end and with 1073 pages (a bicep builder for sure) kept me riveted until the last page.

Cait (caitertot) | 604 comments Linda and Claire, I agree with you regarding Under the Dome. King floored it right out of the gate and didn't let up throughout the 1000+ pages. It reminded me of how I felt when I read The Stand and It (my two favorites of his) way back in the day.

Angelica, I read Pale Fire awhile ago, and really didnt like it. It took me awhile to understand what the heck was going on too. I quite liked some of his other work, but this one was just bizarre!

I just finished The Invention of Morel - Talk about BIZARRE! Wow. I really liked this one. It was weird and obsessive and downright great.

Now back to my stack of review copies... The pile just keeps getting bigger and bigger. I am going to start the e-book Too Young to Fall Asleep.

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments i finished Jane Bites Back by Michael Thomas Ford tonight. i really, really liked this book. i wasn't sure what i was going to think of it, and i was pleasantly surprised. it was quirky and funny and although a slightly bizarre premise (jane austen living in our time as a vampire) Ford pulled it off perfectly.

i'll start The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo tomorrow evening, hopefully. i've been looking forward to reading this one for awhile now.
