Rach (rachlovestv) | 104 comments I am 75% through Byatt's The Children's Book, and was hoping to finish it today, but it's just so long! Parts of it I am loving, but other parts are tedious and many too literary for me, I think. It's definitely not a skimmer - the language is too rich and dense for that.

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments I finished reading Matilda by Roald Dahl yesterday and I thought it was cute. I liked it, but I have to say that I loved the movie a little bit more. I think mostly because the movie was such a part of my childhood as I watched it like five times a week.

I've now started Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill and it's starting to get immensely creepy. Hopefully it stays that way.

Re: Heart Shaped Box--it will. I loved that book. Did it as an audio and I was totally creeped out during my commute. I used to read all of S. King's horror stuff in HS for a good scare, and Heart-shaped box gave me the same feeling. So did S. King's Cell, if you're looking for another true horror (King wrote this one recently and it reminds me a lot of his 80s horrors, but less "out there").

Anybody have input on Under the Dome?

I'm reading The Darkest Evening of the Year right now, but I'm not very far into it.

Bridgit-Now I'm really excited that they were so great! I decided to go with Lolita since it was in the book club read for Feb anyway! Now I'm excited for A Fine Balance as well(I've had it for months but for some reason haven't started it!)

I must be alone in not knowing there was a movie...I read the book when I was little though. Not my favourite of his.

Carol I am reading BLOOD MERIDIAN-CORMAC McCARTHY. Do all his books possess such violent behavior and tragic journeys? I didn't particularly like THE ROAD either. I am just about 50 pages in, it is disturbing .

It's coming out in May here in the states. At least that's when my library expects to get it.

message 18012: by Carol (new)

Carol Too bad. This will probably be the last book of his I will read.

Under the Dome was really good - more like the old Stephen King.
I'm still reading The 19th Wife....not too far in yet, but so far so good.

I am the first to admit that while I have been a Stephen King devotee over the years, I find that some of his novels leave me cold or at least lukewarm in their endings. That being said, Under the Dome is not one of these. I thought the story was strong from beginning to end and with 1073 pages (a bicep builder for sure) kept me riveted until the last page.

Cait (caitertot) | 604 comments Linda and Claire, I agree with you regarding Under the Dome. King floored it right out of the gate and didn't let up throughout the 1000+ pages. It reminded me of how I felt when I read The Stand and It (my two favorites of his) way back in the day.

Angelica, I read Pale Fire awhile ago, and really didnt like it. It took me awhile to understand what the heck was going on too. I quite liked some of his other work, but this one was just bizarre!

I just finished The Invention of Morel - Talk about BIZARRE! Wow. I really liked this one. It was weird and obsessive and downright great.

Now back to my stack of review copies... The pile just keeps getting bigger and bigger. I am going to start the e-book Too Young to Fall Asleep.

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments i finished Jane Bites Back by Michael Thomas Ford tonight. i really, really liked this book. i wasn't sure what i was going to think of it, and i was pleasantly surprised. it was quirky and funny and although a slightly bizarre premise (jane austen living in our time as a vampire) Ford pulled it off perfectly.

i'll start The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo tomorrow evening, hopefully. i've been looking forward to reading this one for awhile now.

I finished Await Your Reply just recently. The more you read the more you become entangled in the web that they author is weaving. When I finished I was floored and I am going to definitely read it again soon. So read slowly and absorb it.

I really enjoyed this book, too, Jenna. It has such a witty humour and tells of a great friendship.

I'm currently reading The Forbidden Daughter and am enjoying it. It's a basic life story with interesting characters. Nothing "deep"; just warm and comforting.

Efe | 181 comments I just finished the White Tiger by Aravind Adiga which was freaking awesome. I am now digging into The Help. I have had such a pleasant run of books this year!

message 18044: by Bridgit (new)

Bridgit | 475 comments Finished Specimen Days by Michael CUnningham (of The Hours) yesterday. It was written in three stories, which really had very little to do with each other. One in the Industrial Revolution, one in present day NYC and one about 150 years in the future which is basically a love story between a lizard and a cyborg. Honestly, don't know what to make of this book. I think i liked them, but they didnt fit together well at all.

Anyway, on to Company of Liars by Karen Maitland. Time to gets me some bubonic plague!

message 18045: by Susan (NY) (new)

I actually really liked this book...I mean it was teen lit. but it was different and refreshing compared to the sea of awkward girl meets strange handsome vampire boy books that seem to have taken over. I gave it Photobucket

Mary (madamefifi) | 358 comments I've been on a lovely vacay in the Caribbean so my reading has slowed down a bit--I manged to read Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel which is a perfect cruise vacation book, and am halfway through Sarum: The Novel of England by Edward Rutherford. I may not get much further, unfortunately, before I abandon it for something else.

I can still feel the ship gently rocking even though I'm sitting in my landlocked living room. It's weird.
