Finishing One Amazing Thing [image error] ...one of my new favorite authors. I am trying to decide what to start next.

KHoopMan (eliza_morgan) | 151 comments Finished Jane Eyre and totally loved it. It reminded me how important it is to read real, honest-to-goodness literature every once in awhile. And, it stirs up alot of guilt that I haven't read all of the so-called "classics!"

Dan | The Ancient Reader (theancientreader) Well...it's Valentine's Day so I thought I'd go with You Suck: A Love Story by Christopher Moore. Also still working on The Complete Novels by Jane Austen and The 120 Days of Sodom and Other Writings by Marquis de Sade.

I'm on page 281 and I'm liking it.

Julie | 39 comments I just finished A Thousand Splendid Suns and it blew me away! I loved The Kite Runner, but I think that I enjoyed Khaled Hosseini's second novel even more. I loved that he set up the book into parts which allowed you to know and understand the Laila and Mariam individually and then it described how their lives intersected and eventually how their relationship grew. Both heartbreaking and heartwarming. Truly an amazing story!

My book club read this book a couple months ago and we enjoyed it so much that we are revisiting it this month. Though there are a lot of characters in the book, they are all very well developed. I hope that she will write other novels that build on where she left off!!! :) Enjoy the rest of the book!!

Stephanie I'll be curious to hear what you think, especially since you're a big Twilight fan. It's gotten some really mixed reviews, as far as I can tell.

message 17915: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jayme-reads) Finished Double Star and The Sandman Vol. 8: Worlds' End and managed to clean the apartment. It's been a productive day! Although I was listening to Double Star while I cleaned...that helped. Now it's onto The Sandman Vol. 9: The Kindly Ones.

Question, how is the Dexter series? I LOVE the show, it's amazing-and if you haven't seen it-do! I usually tend to like books better-but are the books similar to the show at all?

Anyway, I am currently reading The Lovely Bones. So far it is a pretty good read. My next book is either A Fine Balance or Lolita(which I see at the top is what the book club is reading haha).

message 17919: by Misty (new)

Misty Weeks (mistyweeks) Just finished up Blaze by Stephen King (only took a couple of days to read - I love weekends!!) I started The Savage Garden by Mark Mills about the same time. I'm on page 24. It hasn't quite pulled me into its grasp yet. I have at least three books waiting on me. I might have to switch 'em up... change my game plan. LOL!!

If you haven't read Fidali's Way: A Novel by George Mastras, it is as wonderful a novel as A Thousand Spendid Suns. Highly recommend it.

Heather, I LOVED both Lolita and A Fine Balance, but actually think A Fine Balance was my favorite. We read it in my RL book club and it was absolutely amazing. Either way, be prepared to have some disturbing emotions as you read both books. Would love to know what you think of AFB.

Charlene Basile (cbasile) | 2 comments Just finished :The Help" which I loved, as did all in our book club, currently re-reading A Thousand Splendid Suns, for our next book club meeting. Remember loving it the first time..

Bridgit | 475 comments I just finished Thorn Queen by Richelle Mead becuase I needed something light. I have been focusing on classics and 'books I am supposed to read' lately and needed something light and fun to break it up.

Now I am about 150 pages into Dizzy City: A Novel - an ARC I picked up at BEA two years ago that I am finally getting to. Its about an Englishman who goes AWOL during WWI and escapes to NYC to become a conman. So far, very interesting. Slow, but good. Hopefully, with the holiday today, I will finish it up.

I have tried to read "A Thousand Spendid Suns," three times and have never made it through the book.

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments i'm a little more than halfway through The Serpent's Tale by Ariana Franklin. hoping to get some reading in this afternoon.

i have a book group event tonight, we'll be talking about Snow Angels, which takes place not far from where we live, so that should be an interesting talk.

i picked up Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and What I Did for Love at Target last week, so i'll move on to one of those when i finish my current read.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) I just finished Everything That Rises Must Converge by Flannery O'Connor and I have to say, I did not enjoy it. I found the stories in the book depressing, and the characters pathetic. In fact, I don't think I can pick out which story I liked the most, even, although I can pick out which one I liked the least.

I am hoping to finish The Documents in the Case by Dorothy L. Sayers today, and start The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe

O'Connor did like pathetic characters. She felt they reflected society more often than not.

message 17934: by Lyn (Readinghearts) (new)

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) Which is true when you think about it. Life is seldom all sweetness and light. And the writing style was good, it just wasn't in the right frame of mind for it currently. I'm in an escapist mood, I think!

message 17935: by El (new)

El Haha, yes, you have to be in the right frame of mind to enjoy O'Connor. :) I think she's good for those cynical moods when they strike.

message 17936: by Lyn (Readinghearts) (new)

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) I can see that would be true and I will keep her in mind the next time I am in that mood! That is what I love about books (one of the things anyway). No matter what mood I am in, I can find a book that fits it!

Heather, I read the series first and LOVED it. The third book is a tad bit off... and I own but havent started the fourth.

That said, I also LOVE the series. I have the final 4 episodes on DVR and just cannot find time to sit and watch them - I heard it was a great ending!!

Maybe that's why I like her so much. I sometimes think I'm just a perpetual cynic with a veneer of optimism. ;o)

Heather,
I am another one who LOVES Dexter! It is one of the best shows ever. Haven't seen the fourth season at all though since I don't have Showtime.
I have read all four books in the series and the first 2 are great, but the third and fourth are just not that great. I would definitely check out the first book since you love the show so much to see what you think.

Cait (caitertot) | 604 comments Just finished The Year of the Hare - from the 1001 books list. I liked it.

Now I'm starting Secrets of Eden: A Novel by Chris Bohjalian. I'm also going to try to put a dent into An Essay Concerning Human Understanding by John Locke.

Cecilyn (dutchess411) | 8 comments I started reading the Black Dagger Brotherhood Series. Am currently reading Lover Revealed. It's a good read so far....

message 17949: by Misty (new)

Misty Weeks (mistyweeks) Finally decided that The Savage Garden (Mark Mills) is now my 'bathroom read'. Sometimes these books get upgraded to 'night stand read' so we'll see. Current 'night stand' is The Girl with No Shadow (Joanne Harris). This is the sequel to Chocolat. The movie is quite different than the book - kinda surprised Johnny Depp (oh, I love that man) was cast in the role of Roux. Aaannnyyyy wayyyyy.... hoping for a snow day today so I can do some reading!

message 17950: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) I am now reading My Sister's Keeper. I think this is my favorite book so far.
