I agree... lots of fun!

I found this one really difficult. I'm glad I read it (listened to it, actually, brilliant Jeremy Irons), but it was so disturbing on so many levels!

Diane U (djuseless) Catamorandi wrote: "I have just started The Count of Monte Cristo. It is a little intimidating because of the size, but I have heard so many good things about that I will read it anyway."

I went to look at what was available for The Count of Monte Cristo for kindle and there are tons of versions. Can anyone tell me which one is the complete unabridged version? Here is what came up when I did a search for it:

http://www.amazon.com/s/qid=126574276...

message 17804: by Petra (new)

Petra Diane, if you click on the Titles, and then scroll down on that page, there's a section that says "Print Page Total". The top listing says 400 pages, while the second says 1488 pages. I guess any of these with around 1400 pages is the unabridged version, I think.

Thanks, Jessica. I have never noticed these books while watching Lost but I didn't start watching it until the 2nd season. I'll have to look through this list.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments I have the Penguin Classic, translated by Robin Buss, which seems to be a good translation.

Whatever version you get, you need a good (preferably not a Victorian, unless you're into that) translation, and unabridged.

Jenna | 224 comments Finished Bitter is the New Black (all of this snow is giving me some major cabin fever, however I am catching up on a lot of reading). I gave it 3 stars since I was entertained and laughed out loud at some points, but I totally can't relate to her.

Going to start Naked by David Sedaris.

Beth wrote: "Hayes, I'm finding Lolita to be very disturbing!"

If I hadn't been listening to it I don't think I would have finished. The language is so beautiful and the characters are all so slimy!

Donna, it was pretty good, disturbing at times and bogged down with lots of "adult content" but rounded up to a 3 star read for me by the beautiful writing and a plot that kept me interested to the end.

i know what you mean about not being able to relate to her. it's hard, but there are some things she has addressed that i can relate to. i got abut 100 pages in at work today (snow day again) and i laughed much more than i had the previous 125 pages.

You can also get it through Project Gutenberg:

http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/1184 (This is in English, but there is also a French Version)

I'm reading it now from Gutenberg and the translation is modern, but not overly.

@Bhumi: I liked Poison Study, although I don't usually like that kind of fantasy thing.

@Julie/Rene: I just finished Deliverance Dane... fun. The ending was a little over the top, but that's good too!

message 17819: by [deleted user] (new)

We've got some snow coming and it always makes me want to read modern gothic mysteries. I'm reading Barbara Vine/Ruth Rendell's A Dark Adapted Eye

For the record, The Physic Book of Deliverance Dane was quite good. Loved the flow between past and present. I love books with historical elements that stitch the past and the present together. Enjoy!

I finished reading The Colorman by Ericka Wood the ohter day, and started Brighter Graphite: Two Novellas - which is a collection of two novellas. I read "Graphite" yesterday, and was really impressed by it. Something about this guys writing reminds me a bit of Nabokov. The stuffy kind of personal narration.

I'm starting The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. I'm getting Maisie Dobbs lined up after that for something just a bit more lighthearted.

I am about to start Vampire Haiku - which is written by Ryan, a goodreads author!

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments I finished The Crimson Rooms by Katharine McMahon and was very disappointed in it. It was just so boring. Now, I'm reading Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons by Lorna Landvik and I'm absolutely loving it. It's been a while since I've read a good chick lit book.

message 17834: by Maria (new)

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments i finished Bitter is the New Black by Jen Lancaster this evening.

i'll probably start The Serpent's Tale by Ariana Franklin a bit later, if i make it in to work tomorrow i need something to do!

message 17835: by F1Wild (new)

F1Wild I finished Steinbeck's Travels with Charley: In Search of America over the weekend and just couldn't stop thinking how relevant the subjects discussed are, especially today.

I began Anthony Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly and find it an easy read, and glorious if you are a Bourdain fan or even just a foodie.

I can't decide on my next adventure - will either be with Long Way Down by Ewan McGregor & Charley Boorman (I LOVED their "Long Way Round" book and UK series!!), Hillary Jordan's Mudbound, Dolen Perkins-valdez' Wench: A Novel (good sister pieces to The Help) or Soul Mountain by Gao Xingjian to bring me back to Asia.

Too many books, not enough time?

Petra I finished Ender's Game last night and really enjoyed it. I hadn't realized that it was the start of a series. I'll be reading the others to find out what happens.
I'm continuing with Lolita, which I'm finding a bit slow and yet creepy, and I've started Persepolis 1: The Story of a Childhood, a library book that I've got to get return soon.

I am so glad I read Travels with Charley. First of all ebcause it was such a good book to read, it was interesting and never bored. The descriptions were great and, well, as was Charley! But also because it was a complete different way of Steinbeck.

I have been reading a lot of classics and more demanding reads lately, so now it is tiem for soemthing like. A little paranormal romance on the table: Thorn Queen - Richelle Mead. About 100 pages in so far and quite liking it.
