Petra I have under 100 pages of Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal. I'm really enjoying the story and the dry, sarcastic humour it's told in.
I've started listening to The Year of the Flood during my commutes. So far, it's a very intriguing story.

message 17702: by Bridgit (new)

Bridgit | 475 comments Just finished Dubliners by James Joyce. It was my first foray into Joyce and I was left a little 'meh'. Perhaps that is just becuase I am not really a fan of short stories, but who knows. Will try "Portrait" before "Ulysses" just to check that theory.

Am also partially into Dune, but have to take a break to read my RL book club book for our meeting on Monday. So am on to The Dharma Bums by Kerouac. Really just started and am noncommital so far.

I definitely had no desire to read Kerouac, so I guess its good I am forced to now. And its not as off-putting as I was expecting so far, so thats good. But it also isnt gripping me either.

message 17706: by Brenda (new)

Brenda Klaassen (librarymom23) Help...please tell me the book does get less confusing...this morning I started to read, Gilead by Marilynne Robinson. I am 25 pages into the book and I am all confused, is the narriator telling his story or trying to have his son learn a lesson? The bouncing from subject to subject is making my head swim.

Patricia On the way to the library, they are holding Secrets of Eden by Chris Bohjalian, Peace Like A River will have to wait.

Susanna (jb_slasher) Read Robert Harris's Archangel, now it's back to Atlas Shrugged. If I could only get myself to pick up the tome. It's not the writing, it's how heavy the damn book is! ;D

Hi Susanna. How did you like Archangel? I have it on my TBR list for a long time now.

message 17719: by Petra (new)

Petra I finished Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal last night and really enjoyed it. I recommend it highly if you like wry, sarcastic humour. It's a great story about friendship.
Still listening to The Year of the Flood. For those who have read the book: at the end of the chapters told by Adam 1 (his sermons), does the book have the words to the Hymns at the end of the chapter? On the audio, a Hymn is sung and they're quite nice. More like soft rock than hymns but with the essence of the Sermon contained in the words.
I started After the Quake on my lunch break today and am enjoying it so far.

Susanna (jb_slasher) Donna wrote: "Hi Susanna. How did you like Archangel? I have it on my TBR list for a long time now."

Hey Donna, this was my first Harris so I don't know what his style is in general. I guess I had high expectations which weren't met. I like historical stuff and a bit of mystery thrown in but I ended up giving it three stars: IMHO, it was just an okay read. But if you like history with mystery, I say go for it because you might like it better than I did :)

I just picked up the Historian from the used book store today. Heard so much about it I was excited to get it. I don't know how soon I'll get to reading it, but at least it's in my TBR pile.

All the hymns are indeed written out in the book. You're making me want to get a hold of the audio though, it would be cool to here them sung. Now, let us sing.

Jayme (jayme-reads) I finished The Speed of Dark at work today. It was really, really cool. She does very interesting things with point of view.

Now onto The Hunger Games. A little late for the group read, but oh well.

Cait (caitertot) | 604 comments I'm currently reading Laughter in the Dark by Nabokov and Bad Twin, a book specifically written as a tie in to the show LOST.

I'm also starting to read An Essay Concerning Human Understanding by John Locke. This one I'll read in bits and pieces; it will probably take me quite a while.

that was a great book!! i really enjoy Jodi Picoult though. i love the way she writes in that book(giving each character a voice and a font) and i really enjoy her work! the movie isn't too bad except for some serious changes to the outcome!! enjoy!

Thanks, Jayme. The hymns are really nicely done on the audio. So far, I've especially liked the Hymn To Mole Day, which has a child singing along with Adam-1.

I have Lancelot here at home! :o) I think I'll be reading it fairly soon. I'm really liking Laughter in the Dark so far too. I've got a pile of Lost books sitting here on my coffee table and it's so hard to chose what to read next.

I tried to find out if I could listen to just the songs online and stumbled upon the CD! I might have to buy that, it would be cool to have it sitting next to my book. And I love that they put those in the audio version, since it doesn't look like they recorded them specifically for the audio, just to go along with the written book.

message 17745: by Carly (new)

Carly Svamvour (faganlady) | 220 comments I still have four books going:

Until I Find You - Irving
Dreaming in Stereo - Broderick
The Giant's House - McCracken
The Hunger Games - Collins

I'm almost finished Dreaming, Giant & The Hunger Games, so I'll be starting others.

Jeff and I always have one for bedside reading - aloud - there's always one I'm doing on audio - and there's always one I'm doing as a bedside on my own.

I very rarely do two audio books at once but right now I listen to Until I Find You in the daytime and early evening, and late at night I've been listening to The Hunger Games.
