Linda | 887 comments Just finished Bel Canto by Ann Patchett. It has been sitting on my TBR shelf for quite some time and just couldn't bring myself to start it. Not certain exactly why, but I finally gave in and am so glad I did. It took me by surprise just how much I really enjoyed this book. I would give it a 4.2.

Claire (clairebear8) | 514 comments I decided to put Dead Until Dark back on the shelf and am starting Strange Fits of Passion by Anita Shreve. I haven't read anything by her yet so I'm looking forward to it.

Brenda Klaassen (librarymom23) Over the weekend I started to read, "Everyday Justice" by Julie Clawson. It is opening my eyes to how we are treating some people. I am enjoying it.

Chrystal, I have read Keeping Faith though it was a couple years ago. It is different than many of her other books in ways, but I enjoyed it. I finished Vanishing Acts last night by Jodi Picoult and really liked it. For me her books get me to think how people act or react in situations that most of us armchair quarterback and judge. But she really touches on the true human nature, some of it we don't want to see. Often her theme centers around mothers and the lengths they will go to to protect their children. Makes ya wonder!!

I ordered Not My Daughter on Barnes & Noble.com this weekend...hope to get it in the next couple of days!

Donna, let me know what you think of Elegance of the Hedgehog. I started it last week and just couldn't get into it. It was too much like work for me...I might try it again at a later time, but would be interested in hearing what others think. It is very, very involved...or at least seemed to be in the 25 or so pages I read.

message 17661: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments LOL I hear that a lot about the book. I probably wouldn't have even picked it up but it is my work book club read. So far not many people can finish it but I will let you know if I can pull thru!

That was my favorite of her books. I never saw the movie, though as I figured they probably made too many changes.

Mary (madamefifi) | 358 comments I meant to read A Mercy next but somehow wound up re-reading Fanny: Being the True History of the Adventures of Fanny Hackabout-Jones. The writing style is a bit tedious (Jong replicates the style and wording of the early 18th century) but the story is a rollicking good time.

Chrystal, Jamaie, Christine and Diane --- LOVED Not My Daughter!!!! Barbara Delinsky's last three books have been outstanding. To me she has really highlighted the mother-daughter relationship with all its highs and lows

Chrystal, I have enjoyed all of the Jodi Picoult books but truly loved Her Sister's Keeper, 19 Minutes and Handle With Care and a couple others whose names escape me right now..... Jodi Picoult came make you think you have an opinion and when she is done wringing every emotion out of you and all the characters, you realize not everything in life is as it seems.

message 17676: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (sbez05) | 556 comments Started reading Breathing for a Living by Laura Rothenberg last night and I'm already more than halfway through. It's a non-fictional account of a young girl who was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis when she was 3 days old. The books chronicles her experience from age 19 on in the form of her journal entries and various other communications with friends and family. Somewhat clinical in parts, but extremely readable and a heartbreaking account of what it's like to live with a chronic illness.

Hey guys and gals, it's been a littl while since ive updated what Im reading (been so busy lately, but love checking in to see what YOU all have been reading!)

I recently finished "Totally Killer" and love love loved it. It's a 90's retro noir kinda novel about a girl who signs up for the job of her dreams through Quid Pro Quo, a super secret, super posh employment agency that promises to land you the job of your dreams...Though, should you decide to keep it, there is a price to be paid. I strongly recommend this one!

I am now reading "The Colorman".. I am only 54 pages into it, but it is just not doing anything for me at this point. I dont care for the characters and dont feel as though I am a part of the story at all.... Here's to hoping it gets better....

Nope did not. Have read much better books than that . Roots and Somebody Knows My Name was so much better. I could not connect with any of the characters nor could I care about them. The book jumped around a little to much for me. But I am glad you liked it. Share with me what you liked, maybe I will change my mind.

well I read it years ago, so I don't have specific details to share, but I remember really liking the non-linear story telling. It kept my attention. I also found it heartbreaking and I cared about the characters. Well that's not even accuarate. I LOATHED some characters and really cared about others and some I was just intrigued by them and the choices they made. I loved that it was a complex story with no easy answers.

message 17690: by Carol (new)

Carol That much is true . It is complex with no real resolution. I am not saying I like pat finishes, I just would rate it a 2 star for me. I like your thinking about a non-linear story telling. I need to have a little more cohesiveness in my stories. I guess I am dense.
