Just finished that last night. As with you, not my usual genre, but the series is pretty good.

I would love to hear your thoughts on Little Bee, I read it last year and it completely blew me away. I am really looking forwrad to whatever Chris Cleave does next.

Efe | 181 comments I just finished The Last Olympian, Percy Jackson #5, and although it was enjoyable I am kind of glad to be done with that series. I just started The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest, the last in Stieg Larsson's Millenium trilogy. January is all about closure for me:)

message 17410: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments Just finished Two Rivers by T. Greenwood this morning. What a great book; thoroughly gripping with that "won't let you go" impact. Gave it a 4.5.

message 17411: by Petra (last edited Jan 20, 2010 06:50AM) (new)

Petra I've got one episode of Ulysses left to read. This book has really surprised me at it's depth and motion and characters. So much is inferred by the writing style that it makes for slow reading. I'm glad we're having the Read-Along. I don't know if I would have gotten through it without the discussions and everyone's input.

Dreamers of the Day: A Novel is also coming along. It's well told but I wish there was more of Agnes' story and less of the politics of setting up the Middle East.

I've started listening to The Hunger Games and am nearing the end of the second disc. I may be the only person not really impressed with this book. It's very slow moving and lots of explanations of very obvious things. I'm hoping the story will start to hurry along soon. The premise is certainly interesting.

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) | 501 comments Monef, I finished Little Bee yesterday and I loved it. It was very emotional and really got me thinking about what I'd do if I were in the same situation Sarah was in. It also got me thinking about how people seeking political asylum are treated. The book may have been fictional but it was quite eye opening. I'm definitely going to read Incendiary also by Chris Cleave and I hope he writes another book soon. I really cared about the characters and Little Bee is a book that will remain with me.

Marti (marjay) | 985 comments I am starting to read The Betrayal of the Blood Lily. A first reads book by Lauren Willig. This is the most recent book in a series about spies around the 100 years war and a modern day historian who is doing the research and falling in love with the ancestor of one of the most famous spies. So far really enjoying the book. Thanks for the first reads.

I agree, Linda. Coben is a consistent good read. I met him at a book festival and listened to his talk, and he doesn't disappoint in person either.

I also ordered Incendiary as soon as I was done with Little Bee, but haven't managed to read it yet. I think I felt the same way you did at the end of Little Bee. Little Bee herself was incredibly humourous in th face of such tragedy, and the whole trajectory of the story was so unexpected and beautifully written. I think Chris Cleave is destined for big things.

The Last Olympian was easily my favourite book inthe Percy Jackson series. I must admit that the other books always left me with a sense of disappointment, I expected them to be much better written than they were. The Last Olympian however, was a great way to end the series.

Kat, you might like Ten Cents a Dance by Christine Fletcher; it's set in Chicago in 1941, just prior to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and is about a young girl who works as a taxi dancer.

message 17435: by KarenLee (new)

KarenLee I just finished 13 1/2 by Nevada Barr. I thoroughly enjoyed it and gave it 4 stars. The story premise is horrific, but it's never happening in your face. It's a psychological thriller, and Anna Pigeon does not appear. I gave it 4 starts.

I'v just started reading Pope Joan: A Novel by Donna Woolfolk Cross. Has anyone else read it? What do you think?

Hi KarenLee, I read Pope Joan with my in person book group and really enjoyed it. The description of the time period was terrific and many of the characters were very interesting. Even if you don't quite believe the entire story is possible a good bit was based of very real people and events.

message 17439: by Paula (new)

Paula | 1098 comments KarenLee, I read "Pope Joan" and it made my top 10 for that year. It's a very well written novel but it's based on a real premise. The Catholic Church denies it but it makes one stop and think.

I am starting The Resurrectionist by O'Connell. It's about a little boy in a coma, and a comic book that he loved called LIMBO. So far, so good!

Claire | 30 comments I just finished reading Les Miserables - It took a while, but very rewarding. I didn't really want it to end.

Now I have to decide what's next, but plenty of choices!!

message 17444: by Petra (new)

Petra I'm listening to The Hunger Games and am definitely not feeling the love. I'm hoping it'll get better but I'm thinking it won't. Once I'm finished, I'll check the Read-Along Spoilers thread to see what everyone else thinks.
I've started reading Snow Flower and the Secret Fan and think this one will be good. It starts out very well.
One more Episode of Ulysses left to read. I'll finish it over the weekend. I recommend this book. It's really dense and hard to read but well worth it. There's a lot happening in these pages.
