Tracy (mamallama) | 130 comments I'm right in the middle of Have a Little Faith: The Story of a Last Request and really enjoying it so far. A bit different from his other books because this one is autobiographical.

Whoo hoo Beth! Another Saramago fan, I love it :)

message 17312: by Loretta (new)

Loretta Gotta read more of Saramago - I really enjoyed both Blindness and The Gospel According to Jesus Christ, but haven't yet got anything else from him. Too much else to read!

All of my library book requests that have been on hold for months are coming due at the same time. I have The Hour I First Believed: A Novel home from the library, I'm a 100 pages in or so and really liking it. I've got two other library books after that, and have just been told that two more are ready for me - and one of those is War and Peace. Ulp. I think my reading for the next month or two is pretty well settled now...

message 17313: by Beth (new)

Beth Diiorio (beth_diiorio) | 52 comments Just finished A Gate at the Stairs. The first approx. 200 pages, for me, made this a 3-star book, but then from page 230 onward, it became much more engaging and 4-star-ish. Moore's imagery and metaphors are incredible, as is her humor, but at times this story seemed unnecessarily drawn out with dangling possibilities. Now I am reading The Mezzanine: A Novel and Half of a Yellow Sun.

Hi Brittany, I'm not much into it yet. I think it's going to be an enjoyable book, but some parts--like the funeral of Joseph Cross--felt quite forced to me. Did you win yours through First Reads? :-)

message 17321: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) | 358 comments I was going to read The Meaning of Night: A Confession by Michael Cox, but I gave it to my husband to read instead---he was in the mood for a historical mystery-type book. So I've been knocking off a few "easy reads" from my TBR pile. Currently I'm reading Deeper than the Dead by Tami Hoag--she's one of my "guilty pleasure" writers.

I'm saving two "serious" books for our cruise next month--Sarum: The Novel of England by Edward Rutherford, and Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel.

message 17322: by Jenna (new)

Jenna | 224 comments Finished Odd Thomas which was very good, and am starting the Lovely Bones which has been on my TBR list for maybe the past eight years or so. Gotta get this one read!

message 17323: by [deleted user] (new)

message 17332: by Magda (new)

Magda | 6 comments I just finished The Catcher in the Rye, tried to read Wuthering Heights, but the vocabulary level was too difficult for me so now I'm reading Crime and Punishment :)

message 17333: by Carol (new)

Carol If you are able to get through Crime and Punishment You can do Wuthering Heights. If not now sometime in your future. The discussion for WH is on tnbbc, look at it and see if you get some insight into the book. Don't worry, sometimes it will take two or more attempts at some books. Usually they are worth the trouble though. Of course this is just my opinion.

message 17334: by KHoopMan (new)

KHoopMan (eliza_morgan) | 151 comments I just finished The Book of Lost Things, which was totally twisted! I really enjoyed the language that Connolly uses, he managed to pull me into a genre that I don't typically enjoy. Next up is The Hunger Games!

message 17335: by Magda (new)

Magda | 6 comments Carol-- I agree, I should be able to get through WH sometime in the future, but I gave up too quickly on it. I'll try it again soon. Crime and Punishment, so far is a bit easier to understand (I'm one chapter in). I'm excited to get into the book.

message 17336: by Bhumi (new)

Bhumi | 524 comments Me too, I've also given up on Wuthering Heights. Yet I hope to someday find the patience to read it.

message 17339: by KarenLee (new)

KarenLee I just finished Skeletons at the Feast by Chris Bohjalian. It was excellent.

I am now going to start The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley.

message 17340: by [deleted user] (new)

Magda & Bhumi I stuggled as well with Wuthering Heights. Picked it up about 6 months ago and only got just over a chapter of the way through before giving up. Picked it up again a week ago and finished it yesterday. For me it was all about patience and mindset, just kept going and not too long in I had gotten used to the language and was hooked.
