Boof, yes, that makes perfect sense.. Saramago doesnt exactly have what you would call a good break-spot in his books.... So you kinda have to devote some time to him without interupption!

message 1652: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) Boof, I haven't read any other books on China. I have been meaning to read the sequels to The Good Earth, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Have you ever read them? They are Sons and A House Divided. I really have to get to them.

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) Kathy, no I haven't read any more of Buck's yet although I really should as I loved The Good Earth. If you do decide to try another let me know and I'll see if I can pick one up too.

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Boof, of all the movie adaptations out there I have the greatest faith in Blindness. It's being directed by Fernando Mierelles who wrote/directed the beautiful and tragic City of God and helmed the adaptation of John le Carre's masterful The Constant Gardener. If anyone can adapt a Saramago book for the big screen, it would be him. But woe be unto him should he fail...

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) Good, I'm going to ride on your wave of faith, Logan. However, I saw a trailor for it and the doctor's wife is wearing white trousers - if they are still white after trudging barefoot through several inches of faeces I shall not be impressed.

message 1656: by Tisha (new)

Tisha Jess - Yes! I am reading them all. These last two days, I was co-reading with The Queen of Subtleties, but I think I might hold off and commit soley to the Potters. I'll finish the other after the August read and the Potters when I am ready to dive into a few Tudor books again.

JT - Yes, I have never read one at all, despite the constant encouragement from my brother and co-worker.

Val - I have seen all but the last movie. I will be re-watching them after I read the books of course, because I honestly think they will make more sense having the full story!

message 1657: by [deleted user] (new)

The Potters. I'll have to pull out my 3 year planner for those.

It's almost time for my nooner!! 45 minutes of uninterrupted Haunted. I apologize in advance if I come back in a weird mood.

message 1658: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Reading about someone losing most of their intestinal track at the bottom of a swimming pool is enough to put anyone in a weird mood. It's completely understandable Jeremy.

message 1659: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) omg! That's what it's about?

message 1660: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments That happens in the first 20 pages. I didn't want to give too much away. For lack of a better description it's a book about a writer's retreat.

message 1661: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) ick.

message 1662: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments It's definitely the most disturbing book out of Palahniuk's oeuvre. That's really saying something.

message 1663: by Charity (last edited Jul 31, 2008 09:21AM) (new)

Charity (charityross) Well, I'll still read it. I'm sick in that I like being grossed out.

message 1664: by [deleted user] (new)

Ok, so I just read what you are talking about Logan (about 1/2 hour ago). I made the mistake of eating pizza for lunch...while I was reading. From now on, this guy gets read on an empty stomach. That was grotesque. Yet I'll read on. And I can see that it had a lasting impression on you!

The good news is, I learned there is a phrase for thinking of a good comeback to late: l'esprit de l'escalier

message 1665: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Well I finished Girl Interrupted today, very quick read for me and I'll probably get back to book 4 of the Dark Tower series by King, unless I detour to Orwell's Animal Farm.I found it on my son's bookshelf and I swear I hear it calling me.

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) Sherry, read Animal Farm! Read it, read it, read it! It's one of my favourite books ever!!!!!

message 1667: by [deleted user] (new)

I liked Animal Farm but probably listening to it on tape was a mistake. The guys voice was VERY annoying. Kind of 1950s documentary.

message 1668: by Charity (last edited Jul 31, 2008 10:42AM) (new)

Charity (charityross) Ewwww...Animal Farm should not be heard on tape. At all. I can only imagine the horror! Pick up the book. It's short...you'll be done in an afternoon.

Sherry, Animal Farm is firmly in my top 5! Amazing observations into Communism and Capitalism that are still relevant today.

message 1669: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Jeremy, that's very synchronous! I just learned the same phrase last week! I tend to think that I'm cursed by the spirit of the stairs (l'esprit de l'escalier).

message 1670: by [deleted user] (new)

Well, ol' Chuck used it in his most gut wrenching story. I am forever thinking of comebacks too late.

message 1671: by [deleted user] (new)

I agree, Charity. That is why I vow to not listen to any books that I plan on reading. That being said, I noticed somebody despised Tis by Frank McCourt. But to hear him read it was probably 75% of the reason I liked it.

message 1672: by Stacie (new)

Stacie The despiser would be me...I believe I wrote in my review that it was "gratuitous poo". His brother's book "Monk Swimming" wasn't much better either.

message 1673: by [deleted user] (new)

Agreed, but to hear it with the Irish brogue....

Actually, I thought 'Tis was far, far better than Monk Swimming even thought of being. Except for the part about the All Powerful Credit Rating. (not sure if that is the right book - I think one of his other brothers wrote one, too.)

message 1674: by Stacie (new)

Stacie Yeah, Monk Swimming felt like it was a "my brother wrote a book, so I am too." I actually think I read Monk after AA and before 'Tis, so I was already over the whole McCourt-I-am-a-drunkin'-Irishman thing. Don't get my wrong, some of my best friends are drunken Irishmen!

However, I could listen to pretty much anything spoken in Irish brogue...or Australian or English accented.

message 1675: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Ha! Speaking of the McCourt brogue....when we were looking for Irish baby names for our sons, we spent a lot of time on this SITE...which features audio pronunciations by Frank McCourt! :-)

message 1676: by [deleted user] (new)

I forgot to provide my latest installment on rude interruptions while reading. I'm sitting there in my truck in front of the river in the park. Trying to use as many prepositions as possible. So, I am reading with the most peace and quiet I will ever get when my cell phone rings. <*ringtone* Jeremy spoke in, class today> Hello? Pause. Hello? Pause. Yes, Mr. Bragg? I am calling from IMC in Florida, how are you today? Fine, what's the deal? You have been randomly selected.... Click. WTF???!!! Do I have to change my f'in cell phone number just so I can read in peace? Ok, ok, I can turn it off or not answer if I don't recognize the number, but for the love of God!

message 1677: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) *sings...Jeremy spoke in cla-hass todaaaaaaaaaaaaay!

message 1678: by [deleted user] (new)

Clearly I remember...

message 1679: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) pickin' on the boy

message 1680: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks for the link Charity. I love hearing McCourt speak. Try listening to more than one at a time. That gets confusing.

message 1681: by [deleted user] (new)

Seemed a harmless little *beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep*

message 1682: by Charity (last edited Jul 31, 2008 12:20PM) (new)

Charity (charityross) oooooooooooo, but we unleashed the lion...

or *a* lion...can't remember which

message 1683: by [deleted user] (new)

Gnashed his teeth and bit the recess ladies breast..

(I can so hear Eddie Vedder in my head)

message 1684: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) How can I forget?

(well, I do sound just like him)

message 1685: by [deleted user] (new)

When he hit me with a surprise left...

(he does have a bit of a feminine look about him.)

message 1686: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) My jaw left hurtin'...ooh, dropped wide open

(I was just watching him on the movie Singles the other day)

message 1687: by [deleted user] (new)

Just like the daay, oh like the day I hearrrererd.

(I was thinking of Singles. Weren't they watching some movie about bugs? And their was a Chris Cornell cameo, too)

message 1688: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Oh Singles... such a funny take on the grunge scene.

message 1689: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Daddy didn't give affection, no...

(I really love Chris Cornell...but he did NOT belong in Rage)

message 1690: by [deleted user] (new)

I thought it was fantastic. I love the soundtrack, too. And I'm a bit of a Bridget Fonda fan.

message 1691: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) It's up there for me on the 'Best of Representin' the '90s'...along with Reality Bites. "Hello, you've reached the winter of our discontent"

message 1692: by [deleted user] (new)

...to the fact that mommy didn't careare...

(I guess I haven't paid enough attention since Soundgarden broke up...didn't realize he sang for Rage)

message 1693: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Naw, it was Audioslave. Basically Rage but replacing Zach with Chris Cornell. His style was in no way congruent with Tom Morello's.

message 1694: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) King Jeremy the wicked...oh, ruled his woooorld

(He doesn't anymore...and it was Rage, but it was really Audioslave...broke up in '07)

message 1695: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Have you heard any of Zack de la Rocha's new stuff? It is pretty much in the same vein as his old stuff...message-wise.

message 1696: by [deleted user] (new)

Refrain...literally. Hahaha. Before Lori comes and moves the thread. :)

I knew about Audioslave, but thought they sounded like a pop version of Soundgarden. And hey, Candlebox is back?

Only saw Reality Bites once. Hasn't Ethan Hawke tried his hand at novel writing?

message 1697: by [deleted user] (new)

I haven't. I liked Rage but never followed them very closely.

message 1698: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Yes, and Lori really likes Ethan Hawke.

You'll have to watch Reality Bites now that the '90s are well over. You'll appreciate it more.

One of my favorite lines: My favorite part about graduating now will be dodging my student loan officer for the rest of my life. He will be in cahoots with the Columbia Record and Tape Company guy... been after my ass for years!

message 1699: by Jen (new)

Jen | 278 comments He has. He wrote The Hottest State which was made into a movie. I saw the movie first and had no idea that there was a book or that Ethan wrote prior to seeing the movie. It was pretty good - the guy's got talent.

Ha! I had to sign off my soul to Columbia Records. And BMG had a 2nd mortgage.
