Me too! The reviews seem so mixed...I think I'll avoid them until I read it myself.

Petra I'm listening to The Stupidest Angel A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror, Version 2.0 on my commutes and it's a zany, wacky story with some great characters. I'm really enjoying it. I should finish it by tomorrow's commute, I think.
I'm also almost finished with The Seven Daughters of Eve The Science That Reveals Our Genetic Ancestry. It's fascinating what scientists can find out about our past through our genes. The World is really well-designed on every level. The author's writing is a bit repetitive but interesting, none the less.
For something lighter, I started The Manticore by Robertson Davies. It's the second book in the Deptford Trilogy. I'm not far into it yet but am enjoying the story told through David, who was a child/teenager in the first book. I quite like Davies' writing style. I once asked for one of his books in a Used Book store and the lady said "oh, him...he's such a nuisance". LOL! She explained and said that many people bring his books to her but not many buy them and she keeps finding "him" all over her store. Too bad because the stories are sweet and the writing style is easy-going, relaxing and entertaining.

message 16306: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jayme-reads) Finished The Hound of the Baskervilles, sooooo good. Now I need to read some more Sherlock Holmes before the movie comes out. Anyone have any favourite Sherlock Stories?

Now I'm reading some major fluff with The Gathering Storm. I expect it to be mediocre, but I want to know how the whole thing ends...

message 16307: by Carol (new)

Carol (caroldias) I´m reading the first Shopaholic book now.

message 16308: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm reading Buy Jupiter by Isaac Asimov. They are short stories by him. I can't believe one of my favorite genre's is sci-fi and this is my first book by him, but I really like his style so I think the next book I get at the library will have to be one of his.

To people who have read him, any suggestions?

I recommend
The Foundation Trilogy.

message 16310: by Leanna (new)

Leanna (leannerd) | 73 comments I finished Salem's Lot by Stephen King late last night. I adored it; Mark was amazing and I've read all of the Dark Tower books, so it was strange seeing Father Callahan again. He's so tragic.

I started Eragon by Christopher Paolini. I'm barely ten pages in, but it's going good so far.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) I am reading Remember Me? by Sophie Kinsella. And am still enjoying catching up on The Memoirs of Cleopatra by Margaret George

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Asimov? The already-mentioned Foundation books, and I'm also a big fan of The Gods Themselves.

message 16313: by Lyn (Readinghearts) (new)

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) I also recommend the Foundation series, and the Robot series. The Foundation series starts with the Trilogy, but there are about 5 - 7 books in all (can't remember for sure, just know he wrote the last one the year that he died).

Leanna, have you read many other King books? One of my favorite aspects about the Dark Tower books are all of the cross-overs and references to his older books. Father Callahan was definitely great to see again.

I've tried a few times to read these but keep failing after just the first couple of pages. Guess I should keep plugging away at it, huh?

I bought and read The Diaries of Adam and Eve entirely in the car while going to and from errands and lunch. It was a wonderful, quick read.

Still working myself through Pynchon's "Inherent Vice".

I liked the book, but I didn't love it. I agree, I thought the nurse was a very great and brave character, however I thought the rest of the story was slightly boring.

I find it helps to set aside one day in the week when you have a free hour or two to read. Newspapers and magazines when you are upto it the rest of the week and then on a day of work perhaps, or a Sunday afternoon an hour or two reading a book. Jason

I really liked them. Although I would not classify Asimov as an easy read, but my whole family read them together, and we enjoyed reading them and discussing them. Especially how the political overtones are still relevant.

Sherrie (syellico) I am working on Unfinished Desires A Novel - and ARC that I won on another site. I am really enjoying her writing style (never read her before) and the way she unfurls the storyline so that you're not quite sure what is going to happen next. This will be out the end of December.

I am about 10 days behind schedule and I have sworn to put off reading anything else until I am caught up. Except I am reading Harry Potter to my daughters. I really miss reading.

message 16332: by Michelle♥ (new)

Michelle♥ I FINALLY finished Frankenstein. Oh my...that was not my cup of tea at all! And totally not what I expected it to be, after all the hype that the movies have made it to be.

Now I am reading The Stand by Stephen King and I am only about 200 pages into it. This is awesome and I hate that I have waited so long to read it! Another one that I am kicking myself over!

It's a beast, but I don't want it to end so I'm happy that it's so long. :)

HI Christine we all have different idea's about what is good and what isn't. I like books on many different topics and I know that to a lot of people they would be dull and boring. I have the self confidence though to read what I want to read not what I think that I should read.

message 16336: by Lianne (new)

Lianne (eclecticreading) I am currently more than halfway through Daniel Silva's A Death In Vienna. It's pretty good so far (though I don't think as good as the previous book, The Confessor); definitely need a read like this as I tackle my final two papers of the season xD

Its a little off putting in a way... I feel like I should coughing every time I crack the book open from all the pot smoke I imagine the characters are breathing out at me. It's a bit slow and ponderous, but not at all horrible, if you can buy that!

I didnt dislike Frankenstein, but I certainly didn't love it. I was however, very surprised with the tale. I hadnt really expected the story that actually happened.

I can say that i understand why it has become a classic considering the time period and the slate of other contemporary published works.

message 16345: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jayme-reads) I am so disappointed with all the Frankenstein haters! It's one of my favourite books out there. And the characters are supposed to be selfish and unlikable. I love what it says about the nature of people, it's bang on. Plus it's one of the founding books of science fiction, what's not to love! When I am queen of the world I will see to it that no one can dislike this book.

Susanna, that is my all-time favorite series! Have you read all of the earlier books? They can be read out of order if you need to, but i would recommend trying to read them in sequence if possible. So fun! Really got me interested in all things ancient Egypt.

message 16349: by KarenLee (new)

KarenLee finished The Things That Keep Us Here by Carla Buckley a couple of days ago. It was a 4 star read about a pandemic. I highly recommend it.

I have just started Smilla's Sense of Snow and am really enjoying it. Thanks to the group for so many good reviews! I have not read Peter Høeg before, and might not have without those recommendations!

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments I've read the first three now, and have the fourth (Lion in the Valley, I think) waiting.
