The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) Ann, I have snow flower to read on my pile and am really looking forward to it so glad to see you enjoyed it so much.

I only started The Road today and already I'm 2/3 through. I'm really, really enjoying and it's certinaly one to fly through.

message 1452: by Stacie (new)

Stacie Thanks Val. I feel better. I think part of it is that I am a Master's candidate in English and while I have read many classics, there are just so many that I haven't...oh well. I will be able to mark that off my list soon.

Tisha, I am so glad that you gave it a try and like it!

message 1453: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Ann,I'm also interested in what you think of OaC.I bought that at the thrift shop a few weeks back and I swear I hear it calling to me!

message 1454: by TheReadingKnitter/ (new)

TheReadingKnitter/ Kasey (thereadingknitter) I'm reading Harvesting The Heart by Jodi Picoult and listening to Sisters by Danielle Steel.

message 1455: by [deleted user] (new)

Started Great Expectations. I have been meaning to read it for years! I really like it so far. I am just having a difficult time not reading more than 6 books at a time. I think I could read more if I just read one book at a time. Like that would ever happen.

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) I've just finished The Road (in one day) - couldn't go to bed before I finshed it but it's not 12.40am so I'm off.

I loved it.

message 1457: by Angela (new)

Angela (angelamarie76) | 18 comments I just finished Blindness. I could not put it down. That book was just amazing. Now I need to read more of his books. I'd read Seeing first which I enjoyed, but Blindness just blew me away.

Chalk another one up for Saramago!
I am so happy so many people like him! When I first created this site, not too many people had read him. I love it!

message 1459: by JT (new)

JT (jtishere) Ok, that does it. I must go and purchase Blindness!!!

I am almost 2/3 of the way through Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates and it is just fantastic.

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) Yay for Blindness!

JT, I looked for Revolutionary Road yesterday in Borders and they are having a Yates promotion and had sold out. Have you read anything else of his? I liked a look of a few of his others but wanted to start with RR.

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) Happy Birthday Susanna!!!!!

message 1462: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty (kirstyreadsandcreates) | 610 comments Stacie, Val... I haven't read LOTF either, we can all be embarrassed together lol

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) I'm so happy! I had a great new job offer last week and handed my notice in this morning and I am now on gardening leave for one whole month (what we call it when I'm still employed and paid by the company but I don't work for them anymore).

One whole month of reading books and trips to book stores ahead of me! Bliss!!! I need to make the most of it though cos when I start my new job I'll not know what's hit me.

message 1464: by Hayley (new)

Hayley | 95 comments Boof, how lucky our you. I wish I had a month off, paid, to just read and buy new books. I mean I had a two week holiday and got through 10 books in 14 days, no bad going really.

Linda | 887 comments Boof:

I read Snowflower and wait til you get to the footbinding part. OMG! I really did enjoy the book.

The Road was awesome. We read it for a book club and most of the members thought it was way too dark for them, but while I agree it is dark, I thought the pace of it just carried me along and was just right.

Linda

I thought I was an A personality. You have me beat. I only read three at a time and listen to one.

Do you find yourself getting to a point where you are only reading one to finish it and get on to the next?

Linda

message 1467: by Jen (new)

Jen | 278 comments Boof - Congratulations on your month of happiness! I think you deserve it after reading Blindness followed by the Road. Maybe it's time to work in a little Dr. Seuss or something???

A Gardening Leave? Are you serious? I am really jealous. Does your company not allow you to work once you put in your resignation? The places Ive worked for want you to work your final two weeks....

And the most we get is two weeks, oooorrrr....that plus whatever unused vacation time you have coming. I gotta go work for some of your companies! And wow, more time to read and play on goodreads! You lucky duck you!

message 1469: by Leila (new)

Leila (justsortofreading) I'm reading A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby. It's going a bit slow.

message 1470: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10620 comments Mod
Leila, I really liked Nick Hornby as I read him. He writes fast, easy to connect with reads. Sorta the male version of Chick Lit (hee hee) Long Way Down is interesting, a parts it gets a bit dull and relentless, but overall it was enjoyable!

Whats your favorite from him?

message 1471: by [deleted user] (new)

Finished FALLEN last night. Lori, again, thanks for the recommendation. Maine takes some really interesting angles with the Genesis narrative. I liked the little trick of numbering the chapters descending order, starting with 40- a very important biblical number. Cain gets pretty philosophical in his questioning of God, eh? Good story. MONSTER and THE PRESERVATIONIST will be added to my TBR list.

I'm starting BLOOD MERIDIAN today. Looking forward to some more McCarthy. And I'm still reading MODERN MIND, which has turned into a marathon read for me. But it's good, so I can't give up.

Oh wow, Jesse, I am really glad you liked it and are planning on picking up more from him! I dont know anyone else who really reads his works! Check out his goodreads profile, he lists his blog website on it, if you are interested ....

I know he is in the middle of writing a new novel, and I cannot wait until it gets published!

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) Hee hee! Now not only am I happy that I have a month off to read and play on GR but I am also feeling smug cos everyone is jealous of me! 8)

Logan, what are the other 4?

message 1476: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments I FINALLY finished the Narnia series! It was fantastic, and I loved the religious themes.

Nice list, Logan.

message 1479: by JT (new)

JT (jtishere) Congrats on the new job and the month of bliss, Boof!!!

I Just finished Revolutionary Road this morning. Once I got to the final third, it was impossible to put down. I haven't read any of Yates' other books, but am interested in checking them out.

I'll be starting Edgar Sawtelle later today which I am extremely pumped for!

message 1480: by Leila (new)

Leila (justsortofreading) Lori, I do see your point. At the moment I have only read About A Boy and Speaking With The Angel (short stories by many contemporary authors). I really enjoyed both of them as he has a different and quite funny style - it's quirky and witty. A Long Way Down goes sort of up and down. Sometimes it's really good and interesting, while sometimes it feels as if I doze off. But we'll see. Maybe it turns out good. I know many novels can start off a bit dull but end up being great (and some the opposite) :)

message 1481: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Leila, you need to put down A Long Way Down and run out to buy High Fidelity. It really does not get better than that book. I also loved his essay book The Polysyllabic Spree, which is basically him detailing the books that he buys each month against the books that he reads each month (it should be no surprise to any TNBBC member which list is longer) and the eternal struggle to truly appreciate his reading.

message 1482: by Leila (new)

Leila (justsortofreading) I suppose it is a good thing that I already have High Fidelity :) It's on my bookshelve, waiting to be read but since I've promised myself that this summer I will really finish a book before starting a new one (I have a tendency to read several at once), it's going to need to wait a little :)

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) How can I have 179 unread books on my shelf and still find nothing to read??????????

Help me!!!

message 1484: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Boof, is your to-read shelf on GR books that you already own and want to read? If so, then you should read Seeing and keep your awesome lit streak alive.

message 1485: by [deleted user] (new)

Emma - I just picked up Narnia for the first time in a couple of months. I'm reading it to my daughter but she often picks more children like books. We are in the middle of the Horse and His Boy and it is getting pretty good.

Jesse - My current marathon book is NonZero (which I've vented about in more than one thread). As of today's lunch break I am only 25 pages from the end! With any luck I'll finish up this evening and moveon.org!!

message 1486: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments I stayed up until 2 am reading ORYX AND CRAKE. It is really mindblowing! Then, I layed in the bed, wondering what was going to happened next! Could not go to sleep! Then I slept in so late (bless my boys hearts!) Now I am getting my gr fix, and then back to OAC!!!

Btw, Congratulation Boof! You lucky thing you! I stay at home all the time, so welcome to my world!

message 1487: by [deleted user] (new)

Good for you, Jeremy. I'm sure you'll feel a sense of accomplishment when you're done...haha. Seriously, Modern Mind is great, but encyclopedic. So I can read a novel at night and turn to Modern Mind during a lunch break. So it's slow reading. But interesting reading. I think when I finally finish it, I'm going to throw myself a party..haha.

message 1488: by Sherry (new)

Sherry I finally finished Stephen King's The wastelands today and I suppose I'll carry on and read Wizard and Glass.

Ann Oryx and Crake must be interesting to keep you up.Glad to hear it.

message 1489: by Tisha (last edited Jul 29, 2008 09:40PM) (new)

Tisha I just finished Kite Runner 2 minutes ago. I have been reading it since I got off work and finished 50% of it tonight. Wow, what a powerful story. I couldnt stop reading because i had to find out what happened next...there was no way I could distract my self with something else and wonder.

I am very glad I read the book although i found my eyes flying over the words during some of the difficult bits because it was hard to read.

Now I am finally on to the Harry Potter series in an attempt to catch up with the rest of the Potter loving world!

message 1490: by Val (new)

Val Nichols | 159 comments All right, Tisha, you did it!

message 1491: by Stacie (new)

Stacie Tisha, I am so glad that you changed your mind and really did like it!

message 1492: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Tisha, I too am glad that you changed your mind and read it, it's just one of those books that I recommend to nearly everyone, powerful.

message 1493: by Leila (new)

Leila (justsortofreading) I finished A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby. It wasn't as I expected it but still enjoyable.

Now I am starting on Burning Bright by Tracy Chevalier. It was one of the many books that I borrowed from the library for summer reads. I need to return them soon but I promised to finish them all.

message 1494: by Carrie (new)

Carrie Runnals (carriewordstomouth) | 4 comments I just read the update email and Ken and Lori made me homesick for Shoo Fly Pie...Ken, the "wet bottom" is the BEST! This once-Pennsylvania Girl-gone Georgia Girl misses the comfort foods of the PA Amish farmer's markets.

Books? Oh yeah...I'm currently reading The Red Leather Diary: Reclaiming a Life Through the Pages of a Lost Journal. I just interviewed the author, Lily Koppel yesterday (will post in a week or so)--Delightful. The book & back story on how it came to be is one for the movies. I can't wait to see how it all unfolds.

Been enjoying this group vicariously, but hope to be more interactive. Life is so BUSY!

Best to all,
Carrie

Charity (charityross) I finished Summerland last night. Very fun read! I love the way Michael Chabon writes. I'm really looking forward to reading the other 3 I have waiting in the wings.

Just picked up The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. It is a reread for me...albeit a read from 20 years ago. Since I haven't been able to accurately rate it or review it (and because it was the closest book on the shelf to me last night when I stretched over to grab another), I decided I have to read it again.

I only read a chapter last night before I had to go to bed, but I was cracking up over the heaven v. hell discussion.

message 1496: by [deleted user] (new)

I read Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn around 20 years ago, too. I loved them at the time but I remember so little besides the basic story line that I have to re-read them.

I read a condensed version of Huck Finn to the kids about 6 years ago and had to edit as I was reading. I clearly forgot how violent the book was.

All this talk about Chabon. I guess I will have to put him on my to read list.

message 1497: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) I have Kavalier & Clay, Wonder Boys, & Werewolves in Their Youth (stories) sitting on my shelf now. I'll probably pick them up here in another month or so when the weather turns. Chabon's prose is excellent and I like ambience. :-)

message 1498: by [deleted user] (new)

I hadn't heard a lot about him before joining this group. Then again, most of my friends that read are fairly unaccesible - not that there are a lot of them.

message 1499: by Sheryl (new)

Sheryl (shashee71) | 657 comments I just finished reading 2 VERY chick lit books... Something Borrowed and Something Blue by Emily Giffin. I really went in not thinking that I would like them at all, however was drawn in, right off the bat. My friend Angie recommended them and said that they would suck me in...and she was right.

I am about 90 pages into Sea Glass by Anita Shreve. It is definitely a change a pace from the previous two... Shreve is introducing and flip flopping between characters at this point. It's pretty good so far and easy to follow. Sometimes when an author does so much of the flip flop... I have a hard time following. I am curious to see how the characters come together, as I am starting to see some of it take shape.

You will love Edgar Sawtelle. Don't know if you are a fast reader, but I would advise take is slow. There is so much to savor with this book it is worth the restraint.
