I wasn't that impressed by the Thomas Covenant books, though I think I did get through the first one.
I just finished The Siege of Macindaw (Ranger's Apprentice #6) and am halfway through "Dead and Gone" by Charlaine Harris. Also, listening to Skellig by David Almond.

Hey,You're right! When I had eye surgery, I listened to audiobooks and for some reason loved non-fiction, which I never read ordinarily. I listened to Frank McCourt's "Angela's Ashes" and it was almost like a religious experience.
Just finished The Lightening Thief and am now starting on The Sea of Monsters. I amnot really impressed by the Percy Jackson series at the moment, if they don't improve by the end of this one I will have to shelve and come back to finishing the series at another time.
Lori wrote: "Shona... It is very very good, isnt it? I liked HFS so much better than TTW (which shocked me since i really really liked TTW)"Yes Lori - it drew me right in and I thought about it all day - can't wait to get back to it!
Working my way through Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and just started Smashed, Squashed, Splattered, Chewed, Chunked and Spewed. Once I'm done with P&P&Z, I'll start Frankenstein.
Heather wrote: "Petra, Thanks for the recommendations! I went out and bought The Handmaid's Tale after I finished Blind Assassin :)Jayme, I also have Alias Grace so I'm glad to hear you say it's a favorite of yo..."
Hi Heather! I read The Handmaid's Tale as well and loved it! I have The Blind Assassin on my shelf and hope to read that sometime soon.
Tracy wrote: "Working my way through Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and just started Smashed, Squashed, Splattered, Chewed, Chunked and Spewed. Once I'm done with P&P&Z, I'll star..."Yay for Carbuncle, Tracy!
I just finished A Portrait of the Artist as Young Man, plus a reread of The Great Gatsby earlier this week. Still working on Guyland for a class, plus Lady Audley's Secret and New Moon on my own.
Fiona wrote: "I'm reading Restoration by Rose Tremain. I've been finding it hard to settle into books lately and none I've particularly loved."I had a run like that, too, Fiona. It is very frustrating. However, things have picked up, and it is turning out to be a very good reading Fall. If you'd only get that dang book from the library, Larsson's 3rd one, you could turn your reading doldrums upside down.
Fiona wrote: "I'm reading Restoration by Rose Tremain. I've been finding it hard to settle into books lately and none I've particularly loved."I have been having the same problem.

I just finished Strange Candy by Laurel K. Hamilton. Good book of short stories and also a good intro to the world of Anita Blake.
I have just started The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly....very addictive so far. Has anyone else read this.
I am also new to the group and would like to find some friends. My book interests are....well if it has a cover and pages with print on them...then I will read it if I can get into it during the first chapter.
Look forward to being a part of this group.

Hello! This weekend it is Thanksgiving weekend in Canada (3 day holiday ~ I'm stretching mine to 5 days...woo-hoo!!)!! Tomorrow morning, I will be heading up north to my brother's cottage and I am taking The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga and Out Stealing Horses A Novel by Per Petterson.

I absolutely loved The Book Of Lost Things!! One of my favorite books ever!
Hello again,I forgot to mention what I am reading now. I am reading the Andromeda Strain by Crichton. I read it a long time ago and being senile (just kidding, I hope!) can't remember what happened!
Had a kind of melt down last nite. The last 3 books I read/listened to was not what I was expecting. Disliked Scarpetta - Patricia Cornwell, wasn't keen on Betty: The Autobiography - Betty Driver due to what she did before, I think it wasn't my cup of tea (as they say) and finally Case Histories - Kate Atkinson started off good, got to middle was ok, then finally at the end, you just lost the plot of where all these characters and who they were or ended up being. I ended up keep going back and forwards to see who was who.Now I am reading Run For Your Life - James Patterson & Michael Ledwidge.
Lauren wrote: "Still reading The Shadow of the Wind... This has potential to be one of the best books ever so I am trying to savor it! Anyone else read it?

Yes, and I read it very very slowly... loved it. Will read it again before too long.
Am now reading A Passage to India which is gorgeous... language, images, characters. I saw the movie eons ago, but fortunately don't rmember much.
Also reading Proust and the Squid The Story and Science of the Reading Brain, which is about a lot of things, including dyslexia. Most of my family is dyslexic, so I am finding this really fascinating.

I loved Shadow of the Wind. Looking forward to his new one.
Right now I am reading To Kill a Mockingbird. Saw it on a best book to read list and thought I would give it a shot...

I loved The Book of Lost Things. Read it awhile back, but found the premise quite intriguing and a totally fast read.
I am finishing the Historian. I am very disappointed with the book. The premise is great, but the application isn't.....
So I bought the Poisonwood Bible last week to read with teh group this month but it has mysteriously gone missing. Grrr. I'm going to have to go to B&N and grab something else entirely, so I guess no book club reads for me this month. I think I will go with 'The Road'.
I finished Templates by Ronna Flaschner yesterday. I liked the book and was compelled to keep reading it to find out what happens to the characters, however, I didn't love it. I found the writing and especially the ending a little weak. Anyone else read this? It is a quick read, and I don't regret reading it. I am now reading No Justice by Darcia Helle. So far I am really enjoying it. The question of how far I would go to protect a loved one is something I think about on occasion. So far, this book is more about how far a person will go to avenge a loved one. I am interested to see how things play out in the end. The writing is good and the characters are interesting.
I HATED Suite Française which was disappointing since I really was intrigued by the back story. I just didn't like one single character. I know most people really like it though.I'm reading An Echo in the Bone by Diana Gabaldon right now. I love the series and so far am enjoying this one.
Finished Run For Your Life - James Patterson & Michael Ledwidge. Now I am listening to Digital Fortress - Dan Brown.
The Last Song by Nicholas SparksAnd
Have a Little Faith by Mitch Albom
Both due back at the library next week, so I need to really read until my eyes fall out.

I'm interested to hear you say you didn't like Suite Française. I didn't "hate" it, but I didn't care for it that much either. I thought I was probably the only reader who felt that way in view of others' reviews. Like you, I was intrigued by the back story and normally would find a book with this subject matter most compelling. However, it seemed very disjointed and didn't engage me at all like I'd hoped.
Kathy wrote: "Christy wrote: "I HATED Suite Française which was disappointing since I really was intrigued by the back story. I just didn't like one single character. My reaction probably would not have been so strong had I not heard such rave reviews. I'm a sucker for a character driven novel, so slogging through this one was just painful.

The Angel's Game has some amazing imagery though I don't think it as good as Shadow.

Frank McCourt's 'Tis and Teacher Man are also excellent!!!!!
Am about 100 pages into The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I love a good mystery, and this appears to be several mysteries in one. And Lisbeth Salander is an interesting character - looking forward to seeing how her character develops.

Sean wrote: "Right now I am reading To Kill a Mockingbird. I enjoyed it much much much more when I didn't have a professor picking the book apart and telling me what my opinions of the book and characters should be. Enjoy!

Thanks for the book suggestions. Did you read them or listen?
Libby wrote: "I am finishing the Historian. I am very disappointed with the book. The premise is great, but the application isn't....."Thats about Vampires isnt it?
Finished reading "Frostbite" this morning. It is the second book of the Vampire Academy series. I am now going to read "Shadow Kiss" , third book of the Vampire academy series. I am also going to start "Rage: A Love Story" by Julie Anne Peters.
I finished The Nazi Officers Wife, which kept me reading until the end. I'm now reading Sandstorm by James Rollins for a bit of fun.
Wayne wrote: "I just finished Strange Candy by Laurel K. Hamilton. Good book of short stories and also a good intro to the world of Anita Blake.

The Book Of Lost things is one of my favorites. I love, love, love this book.

Welcome Maya!! I really like this one. Let us know what you think!

Lori, you'll be happy to know I finished The Beach and it was AMAZING!! I described it to a friend as "most of the book is cruising along happily, bits of tension to keep it interesting, then you start picking up speed and WHAM! The ending is like hitting a brick wall at 100mph." Complete mind-f**k too if you'll excuse the language, but HIGHLY recommended. I'm now reading the Chronicles of Narnia series, needed something a bit lighter after than one :).
I finished SCOTTSBORO by Ellen Feldman. After reading it, I asked at least ten people if they knew anything about the Scottsboro Nine and the trial. Only one person knew. This is one of the best books I have read this year. It is a historical novel about nine Black men (some were in their early teens), who were convicted of a crime that was never committed. Ellen Feldman's research and writing make this book a true page turner. And I give it ***** 5 Stars
I took a detour in rereading Wilful Behaviourby Donna Leon. I'm rereading the Brunetti series. Always a treat. So I'm going back to Lyn Hamilton The Moche Warrior but I also took out from the library the Mitterand book that's causing a bit of a controversy right now La mauvaise vie. We'll see. I'm on a week long break starting late tonight after class.
