Kimberley (aviendha) | 10 comments Hi, I'm new to you guys. I just finished Infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali- Wow! It's a keeper- an important book we should all read by this former Moslem from Somalia.

I just started The Book Thief.

I read Belladonna earlier this year. I got it for a dollar at a library book sale. I really liked it. There is something satisfying about revenge, don't you think?

Susie (auburngrammy2000) | 9 comments Hello Lizzie and Everyone,
I am new to a actually writing on a Web page. I love to read what everyone else is reading! I have always prided myself with starting and finishing books...no matter what! But, with only one working eye, and it not having any tears, I just had to give up on the 1st Thomas Covenant book when I was more than halfway through. I felt terrible, but when there are only so many days that I can read and only so many hours of that day that I can read, I decided that life was too short and there were too many other books to read and enjoy!

Hi Candy - You'll have to let me know what you think of that one. I had the opportunity to review it, pre-release, and I'm curious as to how my opinions match up with the real world! It's actually quite a bit darker than the other series you mention -- more hard-boiled, lacking the charm but perhaps a stronger mystery. You might also be interested in A Guide to the Birds of East Africa, by Nicholas Drayson. It's also like the No. 1 Ladies' series.

message 14906: by PDXReader (new)

PDXReader I'm reading Dracula (loving it), and I'm about to start Anita Diamant's Day After Night A Novel on audio. Just finished listening to The Great Gatsby, which I enjoyed tremendously.

Welcome Susie. Have you tried audio books? I have enjoyed many books on audio and with a good reader they can be terrific. Our library had both books on CD and downloadable ones for mp3 players. You are right however, life's too short to waste on a bad book.

The Blind Assassin was a 5 star for me, too. It wasn't my first Atwood, though. She's a favorite author of mine.I recommend The Handmaid's Tale, Oryx & Crake (a sci-fi book of hers and I think I'm in a minority about liking it). I also enjoyed Payback Debt and the Shadow Side of Wealth.

I had a run like that, too, Fiona. It is very frustrating. However, things have picked up, and it is turning out to be a very good reading Fall. If you'd only get that dang book from the library, Larsson's 3rd one, you could turn your reading doldrums upside down.

I just finished Strange Candy by Laurel K. Hamilton. Good book of short stories and also a good intro to the world of Anita Blake.

I have just started The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly....very addictive so far. Has anyone else read this.

I am also new to the group and would like to find some friends. My book interests are....well if it has a cover and pages with print on them...then I will read it if I can get into it during the first chapter.

Look forward to being a part of this group.

I forgot to mention what I am reading now. I am reading the Andromeda Strain by Crichton. I read it a long time ago and being senile (just kidding, I hope!) can't remember what happened!

message 14934: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Had a kind of melt down last nite. The last 3 books I read/listened to was not what I was expecting. Disliked Scarpetta - Patricia Cornwell, wasn't keen on Betty: The Autobiography - Betty Driver due to what she did before, I think it wasn't my cup of tea (as they say) and finally Case Histories - Kate Atkinson started off good, got to middle was ok, then finally at the end, you just lost the plot of where all these characters and who they were or ended up being. I ended up keep going back and forwards to see who was who.

Now I am reading Run For Your Life - James Patterson & Michael Ledwidge.

Yes, and I read it very very slowly... loved it. Will read it again before too long.

Am now reading A Passage to India which is gorgeous... language, images, characters. I saw the movie eons ago, but fortunately don't rmember much.

Also reading Proust and the Squid The Story and Science of the Reading Brain, which is about a lot of things, including dyslexia. Most of my family is dyslexic, so I am finding this really fascinating.

Efe | 181 comments So I bought the Poisonwood Bible last week to read with teh group this month but it has mysteriously gone missing. Grrr. I'm going to have to go to B&N and grab something else entirely, so I guess no book club reads for me this month. I think I will go with 'The Road'.

message 14941: by KarenLee (new)

KarenLee I finished Templates by Ronna Flaschner yesterday. I liked the book and was compelled to keep reading it to find out what happens to the characters, however, I didn't love it. I found the writing and especially the ending a little weak. Anyone else read this? It is a quick read, and I don't regret reading it.

I am now reading No Justice by Darcia Helle. So far I am really enjoying it. The question of how far I would go to protect a loved one is something I think about on occasion. So far, this book is more about how far a person will go to avenge a loved one. I am interested to see how things play out in the end. The writing is good and the characters are interesting.

Christy | 181 comments I HATED Suite Française which was disappointing since I really was intrigued by the back story. I just didn't like one single character. I know most people really like it though.

I'm reading An Echo in the Bone by Diana Gabaldon right now. I love the series and so far am enjoying this one.

I'm interested to hear you say you didn't like Suite Française. I didn't "hate" it, but I didn't care for it that much either. I thought I was probably the only reader who felt that way in view of others' reviews. Like you, I was intrigued by the back story and normally would find a book with this subject matter most compelling. However, it seemed very disjointed and didn't engage me at all like I'd hoped.

I think hate is a strong term, but I really wanted to throw it across the room several times. The characters were just so unlikeable. My reaction probably would not have been so strong had I not heard such rave reviews. I'm a sucker for a character driven novel, so slogging through this one was just painful.
