What are you reading?

I read Belladonna earlier this year. I got it for a dollar at a library book sale. I really liked it. There is something satisfying about revenge, don't you think?

Trying - to get through the Thomas Covenant chronicles. Having a bit of trouble, p..."

I am new to a actually writing on a Web page. I love to read what everyone else is reading! I have always prided myself with starting and finishing books...no matter what! But, with only one working eye, and it not having any tears, I just had to give up on the 1st Thomas Covenant book when I was more than halfway through. I felt terrible, but when there are only so many days that I can read and only so many hours of that day that I can read, I decided that life was too short and there were too many other books to read and enjoy!

by Kwei Quartey. Similar to McCall's mystery series I think set in Africa. I get a "next reads" list from my library each month, one on myster..."
Hi Candy - You'll have to let me know what you think of that one. I had the opportunity to review it, pre-release, and I'm curious as to how my opinions match up with the real world! It's actually quite a bit darker than the other series you mention -- more hard-boiled, lacking the charm but perhaps a stronger mystery. You might also be interested in A Guide to the Birds of East Africa, by Nicholas Drayson. It's also like the No. 1 Ladies' series.

that is awesome to know. I'll have to pick it up soon...good thing my bookstore is offering a discount for HFS...yay : )

Welcome Susie. Have you tried audio books? I have enjoyed many books on audio and with a good reader they can be terrific. Our library had both books on CD and downloadable ones for mp3 players. You are right however, life's too short to waste on a bad book.

Hi Stephanie, I read Blind Assassin here recently and LOVED it! It was a 5 star read for me. It ..."
The Blind Assassin was a 5 star for me, too. It wasn't my first Atwood, though. She's a favorite author of mine.I recommend The Handmaid's Tale, Oryx & Crake (a sci-fi book of hers and I think I'm in a minority about liking it). I also enjoyed Payback Debt and the Shadow Side of Wealth.

I've read most of Atwood's books and Oryx and Crake is my absolute favourite. But I think you might be right about it not being super popular. I also loved Alias Grace and The Robber Bride.

I wasn't that impressed by the Thomas Covenant books, though I think I did get through the first one.

You're right! When I had eye surgery, I listened to audiobooks and for some reason loved non-fiction, which I never read ordinarily. I listened to Frank McCourt's "Angela's Ashes" and it was almost like a religious experience.

Yes Lori - it drew me right in and I thought about it all day - can't wait to get back to it!

Jayme, I also have Alias Grace so I'm glad to hear you say it's a favorite of yo..."
Hi Heather! I read The Handmaid's Tale as well and loved it! I have The Blind Assassin on my shelf and hope to read that sometime soon.

Yay for Carbuncle, Tracy!

I had a run like that, too, Fiona. It is very frustrating. However, things have picked up, and it is turning out to be a very good reading Fall. If you'd only get that dang book from the library, Larsson's 3rd one, you could turn your reading doldrums upside down.

I have been having the same problem.

I just read Skellig by David Almond and really enjoyed it! I hope you like it!
I just finished Strange Candy by Laurel K. Hamilton. Good book of short stories and also a good intro to the world of Anita Blake.
I have just started The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly....very addictive so far. Has anyone else read this.
I am also new to the group and would like to find some friends. My book interests are....well if it has a cover and pages with print on them...then I will read it if I can get into it during the first chapter.
Look forward to being a part of this group.

This weekend it is Thanksgiving weekend in Canada (3 day holiday ~ I'm stretching mine to 5 days...woo-hoo!!)!! Tomorrow morning, I will be heading up north to my brother's cottage and I am taking The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga and Out Stealing Horses A Novel by Per Petterson.

I absolutely loved The Book Of Lost Things!! One of my favorite books ever!

I forgot to mention what I am reading now. I am reading the Andromeda Strain by Crichton. I read it a long time ago and being senile (just kidding, I hope!) can't remember what happened!

Now I am reading Run For Your Life - James Patterson & Michael Ledwidge.
Lauren wrote: "Still reading The Shadow of the Wind... This has potential to be one of the best books ever so I am trying to savor it! Anyone else read it?

Yes, and I read it very very slowly... loved it. Will read it again before too long.
Am now reading A Passage to India which is gorgeous... language, images, characters. I saw the movie eons ago, but fortunately don't rmember much.
Also reading Proust and the Squid The Story and Science of the Reading Brain, which is about a lot of things, including dyslexia. Most of my family is dyslexic, so I am finding this really fascinating.

I loved The Book of Lost Things. Read it awhile back, but found the premise quite intriguing and a totally fast read.

I am now reading No Justice by Darcia Helle. So far I am really enjoying it. The question of how far I would go to protect a loved one is something I think about on occasion. So far, this book is more about how far a person will go to avenge a loved one. I am interested to see how things play out in the end. The writing is good and the characters are interesting.

I'm reading An Echo in the Bone by Diana Gabaldon right now. I love the series and so far am enjoying this one.

And
Have a Little Faith by Mitch Albom
Both due back at the library next week, so I need to really read until my eyes fall out.

I'm interested to hear you say you didn't like Suite Française. I didn't "hate" it, but I didn't care for it that much either. I thought I was probably the only reader who felt that way in view of others' reviews. Like you, I was intrigued by the back story and normally would find a book with this subject matter most compelling. However, it seemed very disjointed and didn't engage me at all like I'd hoped.

I think hate is a strong term, but I really wanted to throw it across the room several times. The characters were just so unlikeable. My reaction probably would not have been so strong had I not heard such rave reviews. I'm a sucker for a character driven novel, so slogging through this one was just painful.

The Angel's Game has some amazing imagery though I don't think it as good as Shadow.

Frank McCourt's 'Tis and Teacher Man are also excellent!!!!!
