Loretta I just finished The Solitudes by John Crowley, which is the first of four books in a series called the Aegypt cycle. I enjoyed it, although it's a little (a lot) dense and really a novel of ideas more than anything else. I also think it was in large measure setting up the ideas and characters for the rest of the series, so moving on to the second book now, Love & Sleep

Jenna/Paula: I loved Shutter Island. While I am currently reading a Dennis Lehane novel and really loving it, I am not totally a huge fan of his, but Shutter Island is IMO one of his best.

Glad you liked "Pillars" Kellie, I loved it when I read it and couldn't wait for the sequel (which takes place 200 years later) but it's still sitting in my stacks! LOL

Started reading this today, im already about 100 pages in, and its only 250 pages so i should finish it today.
It's alright, nothing spectacular but I got it at a book sale at my local church and it looked decent enough.

I wanted to get through all my "quick read" books first since I have a couple sitting on my shelf.

I think I'm going to read this one next, its also a short book, 250 pages i belive, smaller print then what im reading now but it should also be a quick read.

I read this a few years back and almost threw the book across the room. The author made me that upset. Didn't you find that the Author was much more damaging to the family than Capitalistic America ever could have been? I think he became worse than the system he meant to demean.

message 14818: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 310 comments So i found out that with a busted computer, I have tons more time to read! I finished Catching Fire which was pretty good, and last night finished Handle with Care. Vary well written story with interesting characters but the subject matter made me very angry. Although I kinda thought going into it that it would, made the book harder to read cuz I kept thinking about it and arguing in my head with the characters.

message 14819: by Michelle♥ (new)

Michelle♥ Denise wrote: "Michelle♥ wrote: "I have read The Lost Symbol."

To me, Angels and Demons was the best of the Robert Langdon series, then came The Da Vinci Code. I pre-ordered The Lost Symbol because I was so excited to read it! I got it delivered on the day it was in stores, Sept. 15th, and devoured it that night when I came home from work.

Now this is just my opinion, but I honestly did NOT like this book. I felt there were two halves to it and it should have ended a lot sooner than it did. Unfortunately all my expectations that I had for it were shattered. My advice would be to wait til it comes out in paperback for those who have not read it yet.

Don't get me wrong; I will most definitely pick up another literary piece written by Dan Brown, but I just think that The Lost Symbol was not what it was suppose to be. It did not satisfy the Robert Langdon craving or the mystical secret society wisdom that I wished to obtain. I don't want to give away any of the plot so I'm not mentioning a lot and just keeping this very brief and broad.

Message me if you want more details, Denise.

That was an interesting review. I have read Angels & Demons, because it was on a list of books to read before you die. It was a bucket list of books.

I kept saying to myself why was it a must read. I have read so many other books that were better. When I read the Da Vinci Code. I just wanted it to be over. I was exhausted trotting all over Europe.

Carol, if you felt that way about Angels and Demons and DaVinci Code then I wouldn't read The Lost Symbol. It is very tedious at times, very very involved and at the end I felt like it just kept going and going, even after the big reveal.

Current - The Beach by Alex Garland. Yup, the Leo Dicaprio movie. Not too far in just yet, but GREAT book so far.
Trying - to get through the Thomas Covenant chronicles. Having a bit of trouble, possibly because I have each series as a single volume, makes it a bit of a daunting read.
Next - thinking about starting on the Hawkwood series.

Viki, I loved Saving Fish From Drowning. I think what hooked me on it initially was listening to it on CD in the car. Amy Tan reads it and is great. I switched to print after my car trip, which was only about a quarter or little more into the book. Fantastic book, so witty.

Michelle♥ Just started The Shining by Stephen King. So far it's just interesting. I keep waiting for the scary intense music to cue up so I can cover my eyes and peek through a little hole, just like watching a scary movie.

So far, haven't had to do that yet!

Has anyone else read this?

message 14844: by KarenLee (new)

KarenLee I just finished reading The Story of Lucy Gault by William Trevor. I'm trying to figure out what I think of the book. I definitely liked the book, but I'm not sure I loved it. However, the writing is lyrical, and I think the story will stay with me a long time. I'll probably give it 4 stars.

Next, I'm going to start Too Loud A Solitude by Bohumil Hrabaal.

Hello!

I am reading The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. I read this eleven years ago, when it first came out, and loathed the character of the father so much that it tainted the whole book for me. So many people love this book and *gasp* when I admit my dislike for the novel. I am hoping time and distance will allow me a different appreciation for the story. I love all of Kingsolver's other books so was disappointed to have a negative reaction to Poisonwood.

message 14850: by Tani (new)

Tani | 137 comments I'm reading several different books, as usual. I went to the library today to return some books, and even though I didn't really plan on taking anything out, I ended up with two. First, I picked up The Last Olympian by Rick Riordan, which I'm really looking forward to reading. I was surprised to see it available, since the last time I checked it had a huge waiting list, but I'm not looking a gift horse in the mouth. ;)

Second, while I was wandering around, I stumbled upon the books by Jennifer Crusie, an author who keeps popping up on my radar. It seems like there are a lot people reading her lately. Even though I don't really consider myself a fan of chick lit, if I hear enough about a book or author, I'll usually check it out, so I grabbed Crazy For You and read the first few sentences. And apparently I'm in the perfect mood for it today, because I couldn't resist taking it out. I'm about 30 pages in, and enjoying to so far. I hope it continues to be as enjoyable.
