What are you reading?

As there were about 300 people waiting to meet her and get her book signed (I was one of the lucky ones who got in the first group of 25), I had decided to be very brief with any comments. As it was, when I got to her, I was pretty much speechless, which doesn't happen to me very often. Of course, afterward, I thought of all the witty, clever things I could have said. I did get a picture with her, though. During her talk, she displayed such intelligence and a great sense of humor.

I am 300 pages into Girl with the Dragon tattoo by Stieg Larsson. Took me a bit to get into it (about 80 pages)- translation is a bit odd, but the book is really intriguing once you get into it.
I have Loving Frank, Bridge of Sighs, White Tiger, The Book Thief and That old Cape Magic (in no particular order) queued up. Anyone read these and have some feedback?

WOW You like all the same as me!!! The Girl Who Played with Fire is so far the best of the 2 I can't wait until the 3rd one is translated!
WELCOME!!

The only book I've read in that list is The Book Thief and I loved it! BUT its different, and I didn't like the first couple pages. Once I got into it I absolutely loved it, one of my favorites :)

The only one I've read from your list is The Book Thief, and it is excellent! Can't go wrong there.

Loving Frank was a very good read as well and I agree Donna, the ending gave me chills!!!
Bridge of Sighs was an awesome read as well, I gave it 5 stars!!!
White Tiger was OK. I didn't love it but I thought it was a good read but I really wouldn't recommend it to many people. I love reading about different cultures though and it was very interesting.

I never finished The Mermaid Chair, what a disppointment after the Secret Life, which I just loved. Happy to hear someone else felt the same way.

Yes, I love having signed copies by my favorite authors. It's so cool!

I loved The Heretic's Daughter and Kathleen Kent is an amazing author and person. I got to spend an evening with her last spring at an authors' reception at a book festival. She is one of the nicest people that I've ever met and such an articulate one, too.

Loved The Hunger Games, Edith. Its sequel, Catching Fire, is just as amazing, too.

I just recently finished The Book Thief and really enjoyed it. It took me a little while to really get into it, but once I did, there was no putting the book d..."
Heather, I was heartened to read that it took you a little while to get into The Book Thief. I tried reading it last year and it just didn't click, but I want to read it, as everyone raves about it. So, I will give it another try soon.

I loved The Handmaid's Tale as well, Michelle. Stick with it and hopefully you will like it the further in you get.

This is for my book club next month? How do you like it?

I really enjoyed that one JG. Hope you do too.

Hope you enjoy "Shutter Island" Jenna, I thought it was an edge of your seat thriller.

It is a story about early 1960's Jackson, Mississippi and is told in the different voices and perspectives of some young (snooty) Junior League ladies and the black maids that look after their families and raise their children. A truly incredible read!

I liked the gargoyle. It was a little patchy though. Incredible detail. But some how the fantasy scenes or the past life scene's did mesh with the rest of the story, for some reason I felt like I was stopping and starting a little. Though totally would recommend it, it is a quirky love story.

I read it a few weeks ago and really liked it too. Saw a trailer recently - they are releasing it as a movie in November I think.

Shutter Island
The Poisonwood Bible
The Story of Edgar Sawtelle
The Reader
the first two Dresden file books
The first four were fantastic and the last two were light and easy and exactly what I was looking for so all in all I'm on a roll. Have Her Fearful Symmetry lined up next.
Mel

Dara, so glad you liked it. It's in my top 10 for the year!

Jenna, I hope you really enjoy Shutter Island, it was definitely the best book I have read all year!

Michelle, go to ShutterIsland.com and you can see the trailer. I think it's coming in Feb. of next year.

What you just described is somewhat what the main character is like... so ok, it's close enough. To me, in my middle school years (which were in the 80's -cough cough) I didnt really know many adult-like kids. Thanks for the information, it certainly helps me see the character in a new light!
