I have heard that from a lot of people. I still need to read Kite Runner. The emotional level was quite high for Thousand Splendid Suns and it is definitely a book that stayed with me for quite awhile.

The Golden Notebook was good, but I couldn't read it all at once. It took me about 6 months.

I always feel bad, too. I just couldn't get into Catch-22, nor could I get into Middlesex (which surprised me since I have heard such great things) on two separate occasions. I will definitely try again, though.
I have come to the point where I will not force myself to read something I am not in the mood for/I can't get into, unless it's required reading for school of course. I used to make a reading list of what I would read, in what order, and I would find that by the time I would get to a certain point on the list I was feeling like reading something completely different than what I had planned out for myself. And trying to force that would almost never work out.

Oh, add me to that list. I reread the same 40 some odd pages three times before I chucked it. I HATE not finishing something I started, but this book confused the hell out of me. Too much crammed in to too few pages with too many characters... Ugh!

I really want to read both of those books. Have you read Thousand Splendid Suns? I loved that one."
I just finished A Thousand Splendid Suns and totally loved it, too!

Lori, I had the exact same experience!! I think I made it about 50 pages in on 3 separate occasions after hearing this person or that person say how much they "loved" this book and how it was their "all-time favorite". After the first and even after the second attempt at reading it I still felt somewhat guilty for not finishing it, but after the third attempt I can say that I will not be picking this book up again. I just don't get it.

I am happy to see the members who have picked up the Sookie books! Such a great series to just get lost in.... Totally Brain Crandy!!

Lori, just to let you know I have the series ready for my E-reader hon x

Michelle: I read Shutter Island awhile ago and never saw the ending coming. Whew! I recommended it to several people and they loved it as well.

Kim. Ha! It's good to know I am in such fine company! I tend to get hammered for not giving it more of a chance, but I just can't!! It hurts too much!!

You can find it on The Book Cubby www.thebookcubby.com

I did get the Kindle version of Don Quixote and that is working much better for me. Read several chapters last night and am enjoying it. It's so silly!
Karen

They both sound very interesting. I've been thinking of reading Dave Eggers for a while, but never gotten around to it. And I've actually been to the ice hotel mentioned in the description of the second book. I didn't stay the night though, 'cause it's way too expensive. ;)
I'll have to add them both to my TBR list...

I gave up on Catch-22 after 20 pages! I was at work on a boring night too so I started to get the shakes from lack of reading material.

I think that's the biggest thing bothering me about it, too - we've been introduced to something like 30 characters or more within the first 50 pages. It's so confusing!

I'm really glad to see I'm not the only one struggling with it! I'm going to give it one more go tonight but if nothing changes, I'm done with it for now. As Jessi said, trying to force yourself to read something doesn't usually yield enjoyable results.

I'm halfway through with that book and it's torturous!
I want to finish it to see how it ends, but my goodness it feels like a lot of work!
Anyway so I picked up City of Bones by Cassandra Clare off of my TBR bookcase (there's so many on there I have to get cracking!).
So far it's interesting. Definitely a different world than I imagined it to be! I'm liking the pace, the writing style, and definitely the flow. I'm able to follow along without looking at the page numbers or how much farther along I have until the next chapter.
I like these kind of books; I forgot how much I enjoy YA! :)

Just got The Beach Street Knitting Society from the library. I put it on hold and somehow wound up with the large text version! Haven't ever read one in that form but after seeing how much you liked it, I may have to try!
OOoohhh Jo, Dirty Job is a great read! It's my second favorite (Stupidest Angel is in first place!)

Fiona, that is a great book! If you have seen the movie, don't be surprised that it's different. I read the novella first, and love both for different reasons!

I've only read Kafka on the Shore by Murakami, but fell in love with it. I can't wait to really get into Wind-up...
