KarenLee I finished "The Glimmer Palace" yesterday evening and then took "The Beach Street Knitting Society and Yarn Club" to bed with me. I'm reading Don Quixote, but it's just to heavy to read in bed? I think I'll see about getting it as an e-book. That will help with the heaviness of the book.

Vicki Marti wrote: "I have read both A Thousand Splendid Suns and The Kite Runner. I enjoyed them both for different reasons and found them disturbing for the treatment of people. I preferred A Thousand Splendid Sun..."

I have heard that from a lot of people. I still need to read Kite Runner. The emotional level was quite high for Thousand Splendid Suns and it is definitely a book that stayed with me for quite awhile.

Carol Lisa Anne wrote: "Taking another break from The Golden Notebook to read The Time Traveler's Wife."

The Golden Notebook was good, but I couldn't read it all at once. It took me about 6 months.

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments I am really getting into THE SHADOW IN THE WIND. It is getting better with every page!!

message 14505: by Daniela (new)

Daniela | 3 comments I just finished reading American Gods by Neil Gaiman. Amazing book, not a page turner but so well written and creative; epic and important! I'd also say that I've never read anything quite like it, very original.

message 14506: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (sbez05) | 556 comments Currently reading Catch-22 and finding it really hard to get into, but that's probably because I had so much going on the last couple of days that I can only read in short bursts. I think this one will require some time set aside to get invested in it. I'm also reading Club Dead.

message 14507: by jessi (new)

jessi (infinitevantage) | 86 comments I tried to read Catch-22 and gave up. I couldn't get into it at all.

message 14508: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (sbez05) | 556 comments Yeah, I'm really not into it so far. I think I'll give it a little uninterrupted time tonight and if I still feel the same way I'll reshelve it to come back to later. I always feel really bad about not finishing a book once I've started it, but I've found that if I tell myself I'll come back to it later, it's easier to move on. :)

jessi (infinitevantage) | 86 comments Stephanie wrote: "I always feel really bad about not finishing a book once I've started it, but I've found that if I tell myself I'll come back to it later, it's easier to move on. :)"

I always feel bad, too. I just couldn't get into Catch-22, nor could I get into Middlesex (which surprised me since I have heard such great things) on two separate occasions. I will definitely try again, though.

I have come to the point where I will not force myself to read something I am not in the mood for/I can't get into, unless it's required reading for school of course. I used to make a reading list of what I would read, in what order, and I would find that by the time I would get to a certain point on the list I was feeling like reading something completely different than what I had planned out for myself. And trying to force that would almost never work out.

Oh, add me to that list. I reread the same 40 some odd pages three times before I chucked it. I HATE not finishing something I started, but this book confused the hell out of me. Too much crammed in to too few pages with too many characters... Ugh!

Lori, I had the exact same experience!! I think I made it about 50 pages in on 3 separate occasions after hearing this person or that person say how much they "loved" this book and how it was their "all-time favorite". After the first and even after the second attempt at reading it I still felt somewhat guilty for not finishing it, but after the third attempt I can say that I will not be picking this book up again. I just don't get it.

JG (Introverted Reader) I'll be starting The Lies of Locke Lamora as soon as I finish here.

message 14524: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberly_b) I'm reading The Fiery Cross (Outlander #5) and loving it! By the way Lori and Jennifer, I'm right there with you on Catch 22. I've tried to start it twice and I just can't ever get past the first 50 pages or so. There are too many books on my TBR to waste time trying to get into a book ;)

Zetta Hupf (thehupfsbookshelf) | 1 comments I just finished a really heart warming story (Dusty by Joe Baraba)about a little boy (Timmy) who finds a kitten in a sack and takes him home to his mom to see if he can keep him. The story is wonderfully written. It is a story that children, families and the pet lover will love to read.

You can find it on The Book Cubby www.thebookcubby.com

Lauren | 220 comments I have given up reading The Lecturer's Tale for now... I just couldn't get into it! I am going to start Amsterdam by Ian McEwan!

message 14528: by KarenLee (new)

KarenLee I finished "The Beach Street Knitting Society and Yarn Club" and went right to Gil McNeil's website. This book was published in England in 2007 as "Diva's Don't Knit", a much better title. She has written a sequel called "Needles and Pearls" that hasn't been published in the US yet, so I ordered it thru Amazon UK. She has 3 earlier novels that I was able to order thru Better World Books. So you can see, I am definitely a fan.

I did get the Kindle version of Don Quixote and that is working much better for me. Read several chapters last night and am enjoying it. It's so silly!

Karen

They both sound very interesting. I've been thinking of reading Dave Eggers for a while, but never gotten around to it. And I've actually been to the ice hotel mentioned in the description of the second book. I didn't stay the night though, 'cause it's way too expensive. ;)

I'll have to add them both to my TBR list...

message 14531: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) I'm nearing the middle of Kafka on the Shore. I almost quit reading about 100 pages ago, but I hoped the animal torture was just an important thing that had to happen and kept going.

I gave up on Catch-22 after 20 pages! I was at work on a boring night too so I started to get the shakes from lack of reading material.

Deanna (deannap) | 1 comments I just finished reading The Bridges of Madison County... It has been sitting on my shelf FOREVER just begging to be read! I really enjoyed the movie but the book is even more appealing! Tonight I will begin reading the epilogue to The Bridges of Madison County - A Thousand Country Roads...

I think that's the biggest thing bothering me about it, too - we've been introduced to something like 30 characters or more within the first 50 pages. It's so confusing!

Rachel wrote: "I gave up on Catch-22 after 20 pages! I was at work on a boring night too so I started to get the shakes from lack of reading material."

I'm really glad to see I'm not the only one struggling with it! I'm going to give it one more go tonight but if nothing changes, I'm done with it for now. As Jessi said, trying to force yourself to read something doesn't usually yield enjoyable results.

message 14535: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

message 14542: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (lynn951) | 4 comments I just finished reading Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World by Haruki Murakami. I was home sick on my days off from work so I got to really dig in. It was my first Murakami and I really liked it. I was told that there would be a huge twist at the end, which I didn't feel like there was, but overall beautifully written and translated. I am looking forward to reading more of his work, although I have heard that HBWatEotW is quite different from the rest.

message 14543: by Michelle♥ (new)

Michelle♥ I seriously have to put The Monster of Florence to the side AGAIN!
I'm halfway through with that book and it's torturous!
I want to finish it to see how it ends, but my goodness it feels like a lot of work!

Anyway so I picked up City of Bones by Cassandra Clare off of my TBR bookcase (there's so many on there I have to get cracking!).
So far it's interesting. Definitely a different world than I imagined it to be! I'm liking the pace, the writing style, and definitely the flow. I'm able to follow along without looking at the page numbers or how much farther along I have until the next chapter.

I like these kind of books; I forgot how much I enjoy YA! :)

JSou I loved Watership Down! It actually suprised me how much I enjoyed it. I was kicking myself for waiting so long to read it.

I've only read Kafka on the Shore by Murakami, but fell in love with it. I can't wait to really get into Wind-up...

Dan | The Ancient Reader (theancientreader) Started V. by Thomas Pynchon this morning. Reading Pynchon makes me a little crazy but it's like watching a gruesome scene that you can't look away from...and that you keep rewinding to watch again.
