message 13554: by Virginia (new)

Virginia Hume I am reading a book by Elin Hildebrand (sp?) Her books just came to my attention. This one is called The Love Season, and I selected it b/c it was the only one at the library! It is engaging... it's one of those "24 hour" books, where all the contemporary action takes place in one day, though with the characters' history blended in. It's a touch gimmicky, with a "big secret coming" -- I've been quite bludgeoned with the foreshadowing. But she's actually got a nice writing style. It looked a little chick-lity from the cover ... or like it COULD be (not that there's anything wrong with that) but it's actually rather decent. Anyway, I gather all her books are set in Nantucket and a reliable friend recommended her.

message 13555: by Maureen (new)

Maureen I'm about half-way through The Reader. So far, it's been a very compelling read.

Tracy (mamallama) | 130 comments I am almost finished with The Good Good Pig The Extraordinary Life of Christopher Hogwood and will probably finish it tonight if I go hogwild. Next, it's on to The Shadow of the Wind. I have heard so many good things about the book. Besides, I have a bit of a wait at the library for the 2nd Percy Jackson book, I need something to fill in between.

message 13558: by Jo (new)

Jo I was in the mood for some Pratchett, so I'm re-reading Jingo.

Jenna | 224 comments Lisa wrote: "Finishing "A Reliable Wife" tonight. Then I need to finally finish "Gilead.""

Lisa, how was a Reliable Wife? I heard about it recently and it sounded really good.

I just finished Everything is Illuminated and it was really disappointing. I think I am going to pick up Reading Lolita in Tehran.

JSou Just started The Turn of the Screw by Henry James.

message 13563: by Mona (new)

Mona | 1 comments I just finished reading the first two Luthiel's Song books on Kindle. Wonderful stories with some pretty stunning and stark allusions to present day politics. I loved them so much I'm thinking about buying them in p-book form which is a rare thing for me these days. I'll be looking forward to the third book when it comes out.

I'm also reading through Tamora Pierce's Lioness series and will be reading the third in that series soon. Fun books!

Rachel Lee (rlcwt9) | 71 comments I am just started The Eyre Affair and am really enjoying it. I also just picked up The Secret History (both GR recommendations) and will start that as soon as I am finished with The Eyre Affair (although I am also finishing about 3 YA books too). Discovering GR has been really hard on my sleeping time!

message 13571: by Kate (new)

Kate MacKinnon | 21 comments Well, I finished 'The Other Queen'by Philippa Gregory and was disappointed.

I'm now reading 'Wicked: The Life & Times of the Wicked Witch of the West' by Gregory Maguire....first couple chapters were a bit boring but it's looking up.

i LOVED the thursday next novels. i thought they were so well written, and just down right good story telling. i tried his other series, the Nursery Crimes one, and just couldn't get in to them. however, i've thought about giving them another try. have you read those?

message 13574: by Lyn (Readinghearts) (new)

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) Maria and Viki - I just finished The Eight a couple of months ago and thought it was top rate. I am looking forward to her new book, also.

Maria and Rachel - The Thursday Next novels are wonderful, at least the ones I have read. I read The Eyre Affair and Lost in A Good Book, and have to say the second was even better than the first. I have The Well of Lost Plots on my TBR pile.

I absolutely LOVE Harlan Coben!!! I love the stories, twists and turns and his satire keeps me roaring with laughter! I've enjored many of his other books; my favorite being Tell No One. That's the first oneI've ever read by him. I just recently finished Hold Tight which was also very capitvating!

Rachel, you have a great read ahead of you, The Secret History really surprised me, I loved it. So far the Fforde's Thursday Next series hasn't disappointed me either, he has a new series out, Shades of Grey A Novel but I haven't gotten a chance to read that one yet.

message 13578: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments THE HISTORIAN was boring and I could not get into it. I picked up THE FIFTH VICTIM by Beverly Barton, and it is much better!

message 13579: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 220 comments Just finished I, Coriander! Loved it! Starting Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder!

JG (Introverted Reader) I finished Queen of the Darkness and it was a four star read. This really is a great fantasy series.

Now I'm reading Abundance A Novel of Marie Antoinette. So far it's really, really good. The French Revolution is just starting though, so we'll see what I think of this last section. I already find myself thinking, "No! No! Run! Leave the country!" like I can change history or something. :-)

message 13582: by [deleted user] (new)

Finished the Devil Wears Prada which i was a little disapointed with, i think the main reason for that was because a saw the movie first.

Now i've just started The Girl Who Played With Fire by Steig Larsson. And i hope its just as good or better than the first in the series.

Jonathan Strange and Mr Norell. It's taking a while. It's a big book. *g*

message 13585: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments So when I began Mudbound by Hillary Jordan it was pretty much based on the reviews of others more than any burning desire to read this particular book. Welllllll, totally not disappointed. With the first few pages I was like ummmm, but didn't take long for it to grab hold of me and I can't put it down now. So far (about 150 pages in) it is a 5.

Rachel Lee (rlcwt9) | 71 comments Lauren wrote: "Just finished I, Coriander! Loved it! Starting Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder!"

I loved the Study series. I am trying to get into Maria Snyder's next series with Storm Glass but I just can't get into it. I keep finding myself speedreading through parts to get to places were it takes about the main characters of the Study series.

message 13587: by Ana (new)

Ana | 65 comments I just started "The dark Highlander", by Karen Marie Moning

message 13588: by Lianne (new)

Lianne (eclecticreading) I finished reading Niffenegger's The Time Traveler's Wife so now I'm back to continuing Tolkien's The Two Towers =)

message 13589: by Megan (new)

Megan Hughley I just finished The Road, which I could hardly put down. For me, picking out a new book after finishing another is usually so much fun, however I was still so stuck in McCarthy's world with the father and son that I struggled moving on to a new novel. Alas, I am now reading The Robber Bride by Margaret Atwood, and being about 200ish pages in, the jury is still out in how I feel about it. I certainly don't find myself running back to it. We'll see...

Tracy (mamallama) | 130 comments Emily wrote: "Tracy, how are you liking The Good Good Pig? I saw it the other day and it looked interesting."

I really enjoyed it! Very similar to other memoirs about peoples and their "pets". I learned a lot about pigs, too!

message 13591: by Kathy (new)

Vicki I am reading The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss.

message 13593: by GracieKat (new)

GracieKat | 864 comments I started Twenty Questions A Novel last night and put it down after twenty pages. Could not get into it. Then I started Premonitions by Jude Watson. Despite wanting to slap the main character a time or two in the beginning I stuck with it and it got very interesting. Didn't realize when I started it that it was a YA novel.

message 13594: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 437 comments I just finished The Franchise Affair by Josephine Tey. I enjoy her mysteries. Not a typical mystery.

I haven't decided what to read next. I have another Tey, The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, And Ladies of the Club, and a few others sitting around. What to choose?

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Uh, either the Tey or And Ladies of the Club. Gibbon is interesting but long-winded.
