Hayley | 95 comments Jessica, I'm the same I read My Sisters Keeper and it had me almost in tears. I do like reading her books and the first one I ever read was Tenth Cirle which was really good. I've enjoyed them all apart from Salem Falls.

message 1302: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments JT, is this the same Revolutionary Road that is coming out as a film soon? With Kate Winslet and Leo DiCaprio? I had no idea it was a book. Thanks for the heads-up, I would have hated to have seen the film and then found out about the book later.

message 1303: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) YES! I remember now, I am half way with my current book, I'm putting Next on my night shelf not to forget what comes next ... he he he

;o)

message 1304: by Jen (new)

Jen | 278 comments Diane - I haven't read Nineteen Minutes but heard it was good. My Sister's Keeper was my first Picoult book and my favorite. It is one of those books that gets you discussing controversial topics with others.

message 1305: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) Is Picoult considered Romance? They have tons of her books next to Nora Roberts at Sam's that's why I have never picked any of them.

message 1306: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 1000 comments Lorena, not at all. There's normally some type of relationship between two characters in all of Picoult's books but it's merely a backdrop and not a major part of the story.

message 1307: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) Cool, a new author to add to my reading list ... hu-hu!

message 1308: by JT (new)

JT (jtishere) Logan,

It is one and the same! The book came out in 1961 I believe and is considered a modern classic (although I had never heard of it before I heard of the movie). Richard Ford has an introduction in the book that talks about it's revered place especially among other writers. So far, it's definitely living up to the hype. My only problem is knowing that it's Leonardo diCaprio and Kate Winslet in the main roles. I'm trying not to picture them!

message 1309: by Hayley (new)

Hayley | 95 comments Nineteen Minutes is a good book - I read that one quite recently and enjoyed it, some really good twists to the plot.

message 1310: by JT (new)

JT (jtishere) Thanks for all the Picoult recommendations, guys! Bookstore or bust!

message 1311: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty (kirstyreadsandcreates) | 610 comments Lorena, that's a good idea. Like you I have 30+ books waiting to be read (doesn't help that I went to the library and got The Book Of Lost Things, lol) Oh the feeling of acheivement I will have when my to-read bookshelf at home has spaces on it! But that all depends if I have the willpower not to buy any more books to fill the spaces! Somehow I think I may fail.

message 1312: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) Oh, that sounds great Kirsty! I know I feel the same about my to-read shelves, the interminable lists of books I have to read, the 1001 (more like 1200) books to read before I croak, the One Book One Country list I promise to fullfill ... man I could make reading my full time job!

message 1313: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty (kirstyreadsandcreates) | 610 comments I know... I hate the fact that none of the books on my shelf are on the Idiots Guide to the Ultimate Reading List either lol

message 1314: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) I haven't heard of that one before, Kirsty. How does it compare with the 1001 ... are there some cross books in there? Man, I can't believe I am so exited about a new list when I can't even manage the ones I already have! LOL

message 1315: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) I'm still in awe over Logan not knowing about a book!
It might take me a minute to pick my jaw up off the floor...

I've wanted to read Revolutionary Road since I read Philip Seymour Hoffman rave about it a few years back. He made it sound like an amazing read.

message 1316: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey Lorena, there's a Idiots Guide...List group. I joined it but I haven't had a chance to check out the list too deeply.

message 1317: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty (kirstyreadsandcreates) | 610 comments Lorena, Its good! the books are in genres, and the list is put together by librarians who have spoken to pretty much everyone to get people's opinions. This is why it's more accessible to me, because it's not put together by critics. So there are more up to date books, and a broader span.

I'm also in the group. Someone has put together a spreadsheet, but I don't know how good it is - I haven't looked. Being the organizational freak that I am, I'm putting my own together so I know that it's accurate! (I have the book, but want somewhere I can tick them off as I read them - I would NEVER write in a book)

message 1318: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) Thanks Jesse, I will visit when I finish reading all the posts I have new here, that could take a while though LOL ... have you compared the lists Jesse? I'm a list girl so I get waaaay to much into this things.

message 1319: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) I can't write in my books either ... no highlighter either! I have a notebook where I am known to write the seldom quote or phrase.

I am really curious about the list now, one of the problems I have with the 1001 is that there is so much repetition of authors there.

message 1320: by [deleted user] (new)

Lorena, I downloaded the excel spreadsheet that someone put up with all the titles. I'll look at that in a bit. Like you, I can't get off this group site..haha.

message 1321: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm just glancing at it and it seems it's broken down by genres, including sci-fi and horror, which in my mind is a good thing.

message 1322: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty (kirstyreadsandcreates) | 610 comments Lorena, when I finish my spreadsheet I can send it you, might be a while though lol. I have it nicely arranged by tabs based on Genre lol. Basically its a copy of the setup in the book. Ok now I feel like a freak! hehe.

Or you could just download the spreadsheet from the group. I think it was Santina that did it. I'm sure that's accurate, it's just my OCD side likes me to do things myself.

message 1323: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) This is awesome thanks guys! It would have to be done in the evening as my children are looking at me wondering why am I laughing and giggling instead of caring for them ... see you all later!

Chao!

message 1324: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Hey Kirsty...you can create your own list on lists of bests. If you make it a personal list, only you will be able to change anything on the list. That would give you the freedom to keep track of your progress AND make sure it stays accurate.

message 1325: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Also, if you create a personal list, you can send it to Lorena and she can adopt that list for her profile.

message 1326: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Lorena,on the back cover the URL is described as
Reader favorites from the last decade plus time-tested classics in each genre.
It has some pulitzer prize winners as well as some classics like Frankenstein or Dr.Jekyll and Mr Hyde so I would think some are on the 1001 list, but not a great many which I believe is part of the appeal for many as the list is very accessible.

message 1327: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Kirsty, if you want to set up a personal list, just send me a message and I can walk you through it. Fairly easy stuff and it becomes addictive for little list-makers such as myself.

message 1328: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty (kirstyreadsandcreates) | 610 comments I would Charity, but I'm already half way through the spreadsheet, so I'm not scrapping it now lol! thanks for the heads up though, its handy to know that it's there should I need to make lists in future...

message 1329: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) This morning, I finished reading The Diary of Pelly D by L.J. Adlington. Usually, I enjoy reading YA books...but this one just didn't spark my interest.

I'm more than ready to start Salt by Isabel Zuber!

message 1330: by alicia (new)

alicia grant (shesha556) Diane thought i would throw my 2 sense in for the Jodi Picoult books.I would start with My Sister's Keeper. It is soo good.I also really like her new one Change of Heart.

message 1331: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Jess, is that the history of salt book? I always wanted to pick that up whenever I was shelving at the bookstore but for some reason never got to it.

message 1332: by Arinamidalem (new)

Arinamidalem hi I am new joiner..
I just start to read The Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy.. I need more self-motivation for classics.. I read fantasy faster 8)

message 1333: by JT (new)

JT (jtishere) wow, ok so I guess I either need to start with My Sister's Keeper or Nineteen Minutes. Watch me end up getting both LOL!

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) Hi Ari and welcome.

Blimey, you're brave. I find Hardy really difficult, although I did manage to finish Tess of the D'Urbevilles. I bought Jude the Obscure on disc to play in my car but I even got bored of having it read to me! Let us know how you get on with TMoC.

message 1335: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments Welcome Ari!

I've decided to not read at all today and spend my day on GR. I can't bear to finish The Last Battle just yet. I guess I'm going to have serious issues finishing series now, since the ending of The Gemma Doyle Trilogy.

message 1336: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) No, sorry, Logan...it's not the book that you're thinking of. But that book sounds kinda interesting...what is it about?

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments I finished Careless in Red, by Elizabeth George, day before yesterday. It was good, but far from the best in the series. Not enough Havers for my taste (she doesn't show up until about page 300).

Yesterday I started Corpse Candle, by Paul Doherty, which is a mystery set in a monastery in the autumn of 1303. OK so far.

message 1338: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Jess, this is the book I was thinking of:
Salt by Mark Kurlansky

It's a pop history book about the role that salt has played in human history from allowing humans to preserve food and thus travel to more inclimate places in the globe to its place as the world's seasoning of choice. It looks really interesting and I've loved Kurlansky's other books- Cod and 1968- whose title's very aptly describe what they're about.

message 1339: by Theresa (new)

Theresa (tsorrels) Emma, I started A Great and Terrible Beauty last night and I'm over half-way through it now! It is a great book! :) Thanks for the recommendations!

message 1340: by [deleted user] (new)

Catching up after being away from the pc all day! Diane - I just read Nineteen Minutes about a month ago and liked it. She skips around from character to character and keeps the pace up. I haven't read any other Piccoult yet but I certainly will.

I shouldn't jinx myself, but I am on the homestretch of my mediocre non-fiction. I like the book but am DYING to get back to fiction. I will be celebrating when the last page is turned. I think I am next going to read THUD! by Terry Pratchett and then move onto one of the books chosen by this group. Anybody else here like Terry Pratchett??

message 1341: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments Oh that's FANTASTIC! You really like it?

message 1342: by Claire (new)

Claire (clairebear8) | 514 comments I'm about 3/4's of the way through Wuthering Heights and enjoying it immensely. What a bunch of lunatics in this book!
