Michelle, rather than ask for recommedations here, please check out some of our threads in the "Recommendations, PLease" folder. I think we even have one for high school reads.... It should help you out with the information you are looking for.

Michelle Kang | 29 comments Sorry. I didn't know "Recommendations, please" section exists. I'll be careful next time. So, you or I can erase these postings, if you want to...

no need, just pointing you in the right direction. We have folders for just about everything, to make the site a little easier for you to navigate through.

Susanna (jb_slasher) Loved The Road, it seems like a hit-or-miss book. Will start the last in the Millennium trilogy, The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest.

Paula | 1098 comments Sorry, haven't been around for a while, we've had a lot of company lately and not a lot of time to read. But we're having a good time!

I just finished "Hung Up to Die" Delores Johnson. This is the 2nd in a series that takes place in Denver, CO so it's fun because I am familiar with some of the places she mentions.

I'm just getting started in "White Cargo" Stuart Woods now.

I don't know... I teach (taught) language/EFL, not literature, to adults and university students, so I can't really answer your question. Given the chance, however, Italian teachers tend to assign British and not American authors so I don't think a lot of Italians have read Gatsby.

You mentioned you're not a native English speaker (your English is very good, however, brava!) - what's your native language?

and I agree with Michelle about Mockingbird which I loved and still love. Couldn't stomach Catcher in the Rye. Loved Jane Eyre and Hamlet.

message 13162: by Lianne (new)

Lianne (eclecticreading) I've started reading C.J. Sansom's Winter in Madrid. Am only two chapters in but it's shaping to be an interesting read =D

message 13163: by C. (last edited Aug 02, 2009 06:59PM) (new)

C. (ispeaktroll) I've just finished Sharp Objects: A Novel by Gillian Flynn (which was bloody brilliant) and am about to start Away Laughing on a Fast Camel by Louise Rennison.

message 13164: by Erika (new)

Erika | 3 comments I just started reading the adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. When I first picked up the Adventures of Tom Sawyer i was expecting something completely different than what really happened. And for once I'm glad it didn't happen like i expected. It really kept me on my toes. I didn't know what was going to happen next. And it's the same with the book i'm reading now!!

message 13165: by Liz (new)

Liz I just finished Only In Your Dreams, which is a Gossip Girl book, and am about to start Jonathan Safran Foer's Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close which I am TOTALLY psyched for.

Well, my native tongue is Korean.
I read the Catcher in the Rye only in Korean version, and it was sooo hard to understand. And I'll read that book when I finish reading The Great Gatsby..

Are they good? I've never read the translations, but I really liked the anime (and the newer sequel). Post-apocalyptic cyber-horror. Don't get to see that combination much. :)

message 13168: by Bhumi (new)

Bhumi | 524 comments I just finished Vampire Academy. It was an easy and enjoyable read, and the incredibly strong bond of friendship between Lissa and Rose was really admirable.

City of Bones by Cassandra Clare
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Mark Twain is the best!! My favorite saying is his: I have never let my schooling interfere with my education.

The Host is really really long, and initially, I was terribly put off by its size, I would read just a few pages a day. But once you get past the first few chapters, whoa, you get hooked. After the slow phase, I finished the book in a day . It gets really interesting after a while, you just need to hang in there. I found it really good, if not for the slow start.

Finished Dr Zhivago a few minutes ago. It was ok as far as russian war-time novels go. There were things about it that I didn't agree with and had a hard time placing myself in.

Onto our group read this month -- Time Traveler's Wife.

message 13177: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 413 comments Just started The Hollow by Nora Roberts

message 13178: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 10 comments Right now I am finishing up The Devil in the White City by Eric Larson. It's a true story, mostly about the building of the World's Fair in Chicago in the early 1890's. There is a parallel story about a serial killer too. Hoping it winds up nicely.

If you've got another King to start your re-introduction with, I'd recommend it. I had The Green Mile sitting on my shelf and I'm wishing I had picked it up first instead. That said, I did like it - I just didn't think it was one of his better works.

message 13181: by Cait (new)

Cait (caitertot) | 604 comments I finished Watership Down this morning - what an amazing book! I'm so glad I finally read it.

I have about 60 pages left of A Thousand Splendid Suns and it has definitely lived up to my expectations. Absorbing and heartbreaking.

Mavis Davis (thundercat22) still working on Enduring Love by Ian McKewn and started The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo 2 nights ago. I braved the rain and a full mall parking lot on a Saturday night to get it.

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments i finished Always Watching yesterday. i won it through one of the GR book giveaways. it was ok not anything i would have picked up on my own though.

i only have 200 pages left in John Adams!! it has NEVER taken me this long to finish a book before. i gave up on both The Stand and Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell because they were taking too darn long. i'm very excited to finish this one, though.

i just saw that Eclipse comes out in paperback tomorrow, so i'll probably pick that up in a day or two and finish that by the weekend. :)

I read so much over the weekend, I'm not sure what I last reported. I'll just say that I'm reading The Map of Love A Novel now and I'm on the fence so far.

message 13190: by Nate (new)

Nate | 1 comments Hi and Hello people.
i've never been good at finding new authors. when i do find one i like, i exhaust their entire catalogue, then go back to struggling and searching.
i'm in dire need of help finding some new ones.
SO...if ANYBODY has some ideas on who i should check out, PLEASE PLEASE let me know.
Authors i've enjoyed and exhausted; (vonnegut, mccarthy, palahnuik)i like to call group one
(tim obrien, tobias wolff, jon krakauer) group two.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR TIME AND HELP!

JG (Introverted Reader) Hi, Nate!

You'll probably get better answers to a request for recommendations (and keep Lori's OCD in check) by posting this in the "Recommendations, anyone?" folder.

Yvette,

that's one of the next books on my TBR. Let us know how the book turns out. :-) I have the same problem of getting myself into the book.

message 13195: by Nikole (new)

Nikole | 12 comments I just started reading Middlesex. It's been on my TBR list for a long time. I went out to get it a few years ago but Oprah had just named as her Book Club selection so it was sold out. I picked it up a few weeks ago. So far so good. It's particularly interesting for me because my dad's family immigrated to Flint, MI from Austria to work for the auto industry in the late 1800's!
