JG (Introverted Reader) I picked up Maus I A Survivor's Tale My Father Bleeds History and Maus II A Survivor's Tale And Here My Troubles Began and I'll be giving them both five stars. The author wrote two graphic novels about his father's experiences as a Jew in Poland in WWII. Powerful stuff and it would be great for older kids to learn about the holocaust this way. It is still what it is, but the Jews are mice and the Germans are cats.

I needed a break from all the holocaust stuff, so now I'm reading Welcome to the World, Baby Girl! A Novel by Fannie Flagg. I like it, but not as well as her most well-known book, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe.

I have this one on my pile of books to read. I haven't read King since college...it's been a while. So, it was just okay?

Lisa | 437 comments I just finished The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane. It was entertaining, but I thought the ending was very predictable. I also didn't like moving back and forth between the two timelines.

I have a pile of library books, but I don't know which one I want to read next. Maybe The Secret Life of Bees.

Pre-accident King is better than post-acident King. I think he lost his edge when he got run over

message 13114: by Leanna (new)

Leanna (leannerd) | 73 comments still working on The Dark Tower VII: The Dark Tower by Stephen King and I'm loving it. I've got about 350 pages left and I have to say it's really depressing. I'm excited to finish, though, and kind of ready to move on to something new, even though I love the series and am sad that it's over.

On a good note, I'm unemployed and out of school for the next three weeks so I will hopefully get tons of reading done. :D

I agree!! Nice story.

I'm reading If Not Now, When? which is really interesting, but a little slow. Am loving loving The Shadow of the Wind

message 13125: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 310 comments I finishd reading Cell which, for all it's open-endedness at the end, i still find to be a very fun read. Started Dying to Live which oddly enough ( and I'm sorry if this offends anyone, i don't mean to) seems to have very Christian undertones. Kinda makes the main character a little weak for me but I'm just starting so we'll see...

I haven't written in a while. Sometimes life just gets in the way, but I have been read and you guys have been reading some great books. [The Thirteenth Tale:], [The Shadow of the Wind:], and [The Red Tent:] are three of my favorite book.. I have so many of those you guys are reading on my TBR list.

I currently reading: [The Professor and the Madman:] by Simon Winchester(I don't read much nonfiction, but this one has sure gotten my attention); [Angels and Demons:] by Dan Brown( I'm probably one of the last people on the face of the earth to read it); and I'm doing my first ebook with Barnes and Nobles, I'm reading [Twenties Girl:] by Sophia Kinsella( this is my first of her book) it's ok so far.

I'm really enjoying Urusla, Under and recommend it highly.

Michelle Kang | 29 comments Hey, I'm Michelle.

I'm reading 'The Great Gatsby'. I'm almost done. But I have a hard time choosing the thesis of writing an essay of it. Can everybody think of an interesting topic to write an essay??

message 13137: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Michelle... it's been a while since I had to do an essay of this kind (and I'm so old that I had my first computer in Grad School, and no Internet!! egads!!) and I really hated Gatsby, but:

http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/gatsby/...

The old standby...

When I was in high school the big thing was cliff notes (they still around?) and our teacher said to us on the first day of senior English: "Nobody should even think of using Cliff notes... I wrote them all!"

message 13138: by Michelle (last edited Aug 02, 2009 07:27AM) (new)

Michelle Kang | 29 comments Oh, thanks for helping me to find some essay topics.
I should have looked at sparknotes..(I don't think many people are using cliff notes these days..)

Anyway, fancy meeting you, Hayes.
Are American students or other students living in English-speaking countries reading this book a lot?

message 13139: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (JenJen1221) | 215 comments Hi Michelle. Gatsby was a requirement for American literature in my school district. I read it my junior year in high school.

message 13140: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Kang | 29 comments Thanks, Jennifer. For me, the book is little boring though, I'm trying to enjoy reading it. Let me ask you one more question.

Do you have any book by which you impressed to recommend for highschool student in mind?

message 13141: by Jennifer (last edited Aug 02, 2009 07:22AM) (new)

Jennifer (JenJen1221) | 215 comments Hi again Michelle...my favorite book that I read when i was in high school was The Catcher in the Rye. A book that I re-read recently (and loved) that was a mandatory read in high school was To Kill a Mockingbird. I have other recommendations that I'll think about, but those 2 popped up quickly in my mind (but in the mean time you can check out the books on my profile).

message 13142: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Kang | 29 comments I read both of them, but thanks anyway..I guess thinking of book-lists that you read long time ago was pretty bothering. THANKS AGAIN....

Michelle, rather than ask for recommedations here, please check out some of our threads in the "Recommendations, PLease" folder. I think we even have one for high school reads.... It should help you out with the information you are looking for.

Paula | 1098 comments Sorry, haven't been around for a while, we've had a lot of company lately and not a lot of time to read. But we're having a good time!

I just finished "Hung Up to Die" Delores Johnson. This is the 2nd in a series that takes place in Denver, CO so it's fun because I am familiar with some of the places she mentions.

I'm just getting started in "White Cargo" Stuart Woods now.

I don't know... I teach (taught) language/EFL, not literature, to adults and university students, so I can't really answer your question. Given the chance, however, Italian teachers tend to assign British and not American authors so I don't think a lot of Italians have read Gatsby.

You mentioned you're not a native English speaker (your English is very good, however, brava!) - what's your native language?

and I agree with Michelle about Mockingbird which I loved and still love. Couldn't stomach Catcher in the Rye. Loved Jane Eyre and Hamlet.
