Sallie(GeorgiaGirl) (shuga) The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo....I am completely lost with this book - hope I figure out this maze I have managed to get myself in with this book. Anyone else having a difficult time with this book?

message 12552: by Susanna (new)

Susanna (jb_slasher) Loved Waters' The Night Watch. Now reading Finnish YA: 39 astetta luoteeseen by Nelli Hietala.

Allison, Hope you like the History of Love as much as I did. I enjoy books with quirky characters and this one has a couple that make me laugh. It also tugs at the heart strings, which is one of my sappy weaknesses.

Sallie, I'm also currently reading this one but can't seem to put it down. I have found some parts of the book troubling but think the overall story is very good. How far along are you?

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Marie Antoinette The Journey just came, but my mother grabbed it first.

On the other hand, I am still reading Gone With The Wind.

Hi Vicki, I also read and liked Olive Kitteridge, but I actually preferred another novel-in-stories, The Nightingales of Troy by Alice Fulton. It follows a family of women across the 20th century. The writing is beautiful, and the characters are real but eccentric rather than difficult people. Right now, I'm just finishing A Season in the Life of Emmanuel by Marie-Claire Blais. It was first published in 1966, but rereleased just recently. For some reason, the new edition isn't listed on Good Reads, just an old edition in French. Anyway, I now think Blais is a genius. Her writing is like none other. This is a great book, should be a classic, but I guess it's a forgotten classic. Ever the literary evangelist, I'm trying to spread the word.

message 12562: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 437 comments I finally finished my book about the writings of Woodrow Wilson. Wasn't sure I was going to make it through that one.

I'm about 1/2 way through Snow Falling on Cedars by David Guterson. I am really enjoying it so far.

message 12563: by Maria (new)

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments i'm nearly halfway through The Eight and i'm really enjoying it. i'm surprised i hadn't heard of this book until my face to face book group selected on a non-member recommendation. it's been around for some time, it was first published in 1988.

i think i'm also going to start the Poe group read for this month soon, i need to track down all of the stories first. i have a number of anthologies lying around, so i'm sure i'll be able to read most of the ones included in this collection without any difficulty.

Lynne - Every time I see someone glancing through The Art of Racing in the Rain in the bookstore I tell them "Buy it!" I LOVE that book. We Need to Talk About Kevin has been in TBR pile forever; I did read Loving Frank - gave it 4 Stars, and also picked up The Women, by TC Boyle about the 4 women in FLW's life, vs. Loving Frank only focuses on Mameh Cheney.

message 12569: by Maureen (new)

Maureen Maria ~ I hear ya! I'm still slogging through John Adams, too. "Slogging" may not be the best term, as it seems to imply that I'm not enjoying it, but I really am. There's just a lot of words!

In addition to John Adams, I've also jumped on the Sookie Stackhouse bandwagon - I'm about half-way through Dead Until Dark (have I posted this already? Sorry if I have!)

I'm going to be reading Darkly Dreaming Dexter here soon. I finished Wuthering Heights. It's so overly dramatic but I love it anyway! I'm reading The Poisonwood Bible right now but I'm almost finished.

Diane (dianedj) I am still reading Shanghai Girls by Lisa See. I loved the beginning of the book. But now that I am at page 200.....I am a little disappointed/bored with it. I still think Snowflower and the Secret Fan is Lisa Sees best work.

After Watership I will read Great Expectations by Dickens. At that point I will earn the right to read some fluff - complete fluff - any recommendations?

message 12585: by Katie (new)

Katie I just started The Satanic Verses by Rushdie. So far, I am completely confused. One of my coworkers said that if I can make it through the first 30 pages, I can make it through the whole book. Is this true? Has anyone else been totally confused by this book?

message 12588: by Dree (new)

Dree I am almost halfway through My Name Is Red. I like it, but it is slow and kind of hard to read--it's a translation, so I don't know if it's the way the author writes or the translation itself.

For a change of pace and a much easier read, I am working on Tarzan of the Apes. I am reading it for the summer challenge same-birthday thingy. I am surprised by how much I am enjoying it--and boy it's an easy read! Hoping to finish tomorrow.
