What are you reading?
Maureen wrote: "I've just started David McCullough's John Adams (I borrowed this from my brother over a year ago!)."i'm reading this one also! i haven't gotten far, i had a few other things to read/catch up on, but i was able to get about 45 pages in with just 2 attempts at reading. it has moved pretty fast so far, which surprised me. happy reading!
i'm still working on the John Adams book from David McCullough, but i picked up Much Ado About Jessie Kaplan at the library the other night, and it's great! i wasn't sure what to expect, but it's light hearted and funny without being obnoxious.
Maria ~I'm enjoying it so far, but I know it's going to take me a while to finish it. I'll definitely be reading other books along the side. :)
Seem to have become really taken in by Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle.Really enjoyed Quicksilver. And now I'm a little more that halfway through The Confusion. This very long historical fantasy has me hooked. So I'm very likely to stick it out all the way through The System of the World.
This opus would seem to be a lot of imposing reading; but Stephenson breaks it up into very compelling short works that keep the reader (me, at least) turning pages to find out more.
Maria wrote: "Ingrid wrote: "Well, right now I'm reading "A Tale of Two Cities" by Charles Dickens...I bought this book when I was still in high school but never got around to actually reading it so now I'm goin..."Thanks...I'm reading bout 3 chapters a day...so far so good...we can read it together if you want...hey 3rd time is a charm lol...
I'm reading now "The House of Wisdom: How the Arabs Transformed Western Civilization" and is absolutely fascinating! It's really a delight to be able to dip into a book and almost do nothing else as it holds you practically to the very end! But of course one does need to eat and sleep!
I just finished SHUTTER ISLAND and boy was it good! I did not see that ending! Now I am not sure what to read next.
Maria wrote: "Ingrid wrote: "Well, right now I'm reading "A Tale of Two Cities" by Charles Dickens...I bought this book when I was still in high school but never got around to actually reading it so now I'm goin..."I haven't read the book but I've seen the movie and it's a terrific story. I quite like Dicken's writings.
I'm reading In the Company of Cheerful Ladies. It's got to be back to the Library by Saturday.
Petra wrote: "Maria wrote: "Ingrid wrote: "Well, right now I'm reading "A Tale of Two Cities" by Charles Dickens...I bought this book when I was still in high school but never got around to actually reading it s..."I didn't know there was a movie version...which one is better...
I started on The Hound of the Baskervilles.Last night I finished The Devil's Arithmetic. I could not believe how great it was. It made me well up.
Ann, I LOVED Shutter Island!!! I always say I wish I could forget the ending and go back and read it again. I can't wait for the movie!
Finished The Time Traveler's Wife last night, and am now reading A Simple Act of Violence; not that far into it yet, but so far so good!
Ingrid - I think there have been several movie versions of Tale of Two Cities. There's one from the mid-30s, with Ronald Coleman and Basil Rathbone, another from the 50s with Dirk Bogarde and Christopher Lee, and I think it was "made for television" several times in the 80s.I believe the one I saw in school was the Ronald Coleman.
Just finished The Story of Forgetting A Novel and Brideshead Revisited on audio. I enjoyed both. Currently finishing up Something Borrowed (a firstreads giveaway that I won a while back and need to review!). I'm also working on finishing Persuasion.
I have just finished Sleepyhead - Mark Billingham and found it weird. Not sure what to make of it now. I am now gonna read Hollywood Wives - Jackie Collins.
Carol wrote: "Oh... I wish I won Something Borrowed!"Carol, make sure you go sign up at the giveaways! For that particular giveaway, the publisher gave one to everyone who signed up! You just never know!
Ann from S.C. wrote: "I just finished SHUTTER ISLAND and boy was it good! I did not see that ending! Now I am not sure what to read next."I'm glad to hear you liked that one, Ann. I just bought that one last week and am looking forward to starting it. (Even more, now!) :)

REALLY? That´s fantastic! The sad thing is I never see BR giveaways... The most part is just U.S.
I finished "The Pig Did It", which was good but not great. I've started a YA novel titled "Hero" by Perry Moore, about a gay teenage superhero. I needed something different, and it is a quick and easy read. So far I'm enjoying it.
im almost done with Water for Elephants, I just love the book. I don't know what im going to read when im done.. i have so many books to pick from.. Maybe Dogs of Babel
Started "The Book Thief" this afternoon at the pool...I'm thinking this might be a late night of reading.
I only have about 50 more pages to go in Water for Elephants, So I think Ill be able to finish it tonight that way I can start something else tomorrow..
I just started The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. As soon as I finished the first chapter I knew that I would love it. It reminds me of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, which I love. I really like the honesty of the character, and the stream of consciousness style of thinking and writing. Definitely one to add to my library.
I finished The Woman In White. It was just okay for me.I read The Sugar Queen. I really enjoyed it. It was nice to watch these young women's friendships grow and see them learn about themselves. And I love the little bits of magic the author throws in her books. One of the characters in this one has books magically appear for her as she needs them. Her boyfriend cheats on her? She gets Madame Bovary and a bunch of self help books. Bored at her grandparents' house? She gets a book of card tricks. Wouldn't that be cool?
I also finished up A Land Remembered, which my mother-in-law insisted I borrow. It was better than I expected. The story was pretty good, but the writing could have been better.
And now I'm starting the second in the Temeraire series, Throne of Jade.
Allison I LOVED Curious Incident I thought it was wonderful. I just loved the character and how it is all written. I have Extremely Loud on my wish list i'll have to put it higher then. I also got A Spot of Bother from the author of Curious Incident, I heard good reviews of it so hopefully I like it. I'm glad you're enjoying it!
I just finished Water for Elephants. Just excellent. Anyone who hasn't read it yet needs to go out and get it. I hope that they do go through with the movie and I hope that it will be every bit as good as the book.
I think I am going to start reading The History of Love. It's a shorter book so I should be able to finish it this weekend..

Carol, go to Explore, then Books, then Giveaways and then More Giveaways. It'll list only the Giveaways that you can enter. There's quite a few Giveaways for outside the US. I hope to hear soon that you've won one.
I just finished The Hound of the baskervilles and recently started Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris. I'm only a few pages into it.
Just finished An Irish Country Doctor earlier so now I have to finish A Tale of Two Cities, and North & South by Elizabeth Gaskell, by the end of June for the Victorian Challenge I joined months ago.
I am reading The Red Leather Diary Reclaiming a Life Through the Pages of a Lost Journal by Lily Koppel. I love it.
Just finished The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society which I loved and highly recommend. I am now reading The Importance of Being Kennedywhich looks promising as well.
I read The Sugar Queen. I really enjoyed it. It was nice to watch these young women's friendships grow and see them learn ..
I've enjoyed both of Allen's books that I've read. I like the magical elements and there is always a good lesson in them I think without being preachy, they are subtle. I look forward to more by her.
I am almost finished with Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkabanand I have Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fireon hold at the library. I'm hoping I'll be able to pick it up this weekend and start because I'm almost done with Azkaban. I'll probably finish tonight. I'm up against a deadline here. I've got until July 15 to at least get through Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince before the movie.
I finished I Am the Messenger last night. Today I'll be starting Everything Is Illuminated A Novel. I'm also currently listening to the fantastic Jim Dale narrate A Christmas Carol.
I am about half way through The White Tiger. It is interesting so far. I have taken a break from Ray Charles Man and Music. It is just not holding my attention. Ray Charles is a very interesting man, but the author doesn't bring that out.
I've started reading Enrique Joven's The Book of God and Physics A Novel of the Voynich Mystery. I'm only about 80 pages in or so but I'm thoroughly enjoying it so far, especially the history bits =D
Kris wrote: "Linda wrote: "I just started Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese. Am reading it for our B&N book club. So far (while admittedly not far into it) I am struggling. The reviews have been positive..."Kris, It is obvious the author is a doctor who can't help but use (perhaps) too much terminology. I feel like I am going to med school right now, but thanks for the encouragement.
Lori Ann wrote: "Claire- I really enjoyed The Book of Lost Things, I liked the ending too. I read it right after Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, both about young boys dealing with losing a parent, both very d..."
Lori Ann, I totally agree on both books. They are such wonderful reads and so eye opening from the standpoint of being inside the mind of a child.
Janny wrote: "I'm about halfway through The Time Traveler's Wife for our neighborhood book club."Janny, I hope your neighborhood book club likes this as much as I did. Happy discussion!
