Linda | 887 comments Just started Still Alice by Lisa Genova. So far (about 100 pages) it is a great read, but a bit scary. Since it is a book about a woman who discovers she has Alzheimer, I find myself taking stock about my own idiosyncracies of forgetting.

message 11852: by Samantha McNulty (new)

Samantha McNulty Just finished The Women of Pemberley, a sequel of P&P, and will start Netherfield Park Revisited, another P&P sequel later today.

Claire (clairebear8) | 514 comments I just finished The Glass Castle and am starting The Shack. The Glass Castle was great.

Christina (chris227) | 75 comments I have to agree that Almost Moon was terrible! I was so disappointed because I had read The Lovely Bones a while back and though disturbing I thought it was a great book.

I just started Reading Lolita in Tehran.

message 11855: by Cathyb (new)

Cathyb | 43 comments Lovely Bones was a good book - the reason I bought Almost Moon. :(

I read Reading Lolita in Tehran a while ago. It was a decent book.

message 11856: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) That was the reason I chose to read The Almost Moon as well

Dara | 88 comments Claire wrote: "I just finished The Glass Castle and am starting The Shack. The Glass Castle was great."

Both are great books Claire! I couldn't put The Glass Castle down, however The Shack was a much, much slower read for me. It is very thought provoking and just isn't a quick read. But I very much enjoyed it.

message 11858: by Leila (new)

Leila (justsortofreading) I've read so many negative reviews about the Almost Moon and it's sad because so many say good things about Lovely Bones.

I'd love to read a P&P sequel! Did you like Women of Pemberley?

Thanks for your input, Dara. I've heard alot of good things about the shack. Our pastor mentioned it in his sermon at church one Sunday and peaked my interest in it. I agree, The Glass Castle was a great read.

I hear that from everyone! After I had digested the story, I liked it if you can say that about such a tragic and sad story. I think it was a message about mental illness but it is a tough one.

message 11862: by Paula (new)

Paula | 1098 comments I just finished "My Sister's Keeper" Jodi Picoult. What a well written book and one that will stick with me for a long long time. I haven't decided what I'll pick up next but I know it will be something light!

message 11863: by Gloria (new)

Gloria (GloriasBooks) | 11 comments I'm reading Standing Still A Novel. I am loving the slowly unraveling story and observing the personality of the protaganist. She is a fascinating woman, gripped by her panic disorder but oddly unafraid of things she should fear.

message 11864: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 437 comments I am about half way through I Capture the Castle. I like it so far. For some reason I thought it would be a fantasy book, so it certainly isn't what I was expecting. I am still enjoying it though.

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments Maria and Donna:

I haven't gotten that far into the book (140 in thus far) but I do like it so far. I don't wanna judge any characters yet until I read on a little more but I am kinda following you, Maria!

I don't know anything about FLW so this is all news to me! After this I plan on reading The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo did anyone likes this or hate it?

message 11866: by Lisa (new)

Lisa "The Elegance of the Hedgehog"; I like the story but there's just so much philosophical stuff in it and I keep getting so bogged down in that.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Donna - I haven't read Girl with the Dragon Tattoo yet, but I've heard good things about it from several people who have read it.

Great title, too.

JG (Introverted Reader) I finished A Northern Light by Jennifer Donnelly and loved it! I highly recommend it.

Now I'm starting The Woman in White. I'm really enjoying it so far.

Donna:

I recently read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo . I liked it and plan on purchasing the sequel when it is available in stores - I have bad luck with pre-ordering (books have been damaged on several occassions). I found the beginning a little slow but the story eventually picked up and was pretty much a page turner. Beware that there are some very graphic scenes - most that add to the plot but also one/two that I felt did not.

Hope you enjoy it!

Marci (iread49) | 215 comments I too have Almost Moon(borrowed from my sister) I don't even think I want to read now. I read Glass Castle was excellent. I heard Jeannette Walls speak at our local community college. She was lovely. I will move to the other thread

What do you think about it? I didn't like it.

I just finished The Girl with No Shadow A Novel and to say the least I was disappointed. Definitely not a worthy follow-up to Chocolat.

I also just started reading Sense and Sensibility for half of the I Love Lucy Challenge.

Is it just as good as The Pillars of the Earth? I enjoyed that story line.

message 11878: by Sue (new)

Sue Monaghan | 1 comments I finished reading "Columbine" about a week ago. I keep picking it up and reading parts of it over and over. Painful to read at times, so many lives changed forever. Sorts out a lot of what went wrong, and right that day.

message 11879: by Dorie (new)

Dorie (dorieann) | 430 comments I finished reading Michael Connelly's "The Scarecrow" and liked it a lot. He's always so dependable for a good read.

I'm now starting The Pig Did It, a humorous mystery set in Ireland. I hope it's good because it was an impulse buy.

message 11880: by Dan (new)

Dan | The Ancient Reader (theancientreader) Finished Jacob's Room last night and started Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep and The Mind of God. I'm also working on The Metaphysical Club and I'm nibbling away at the 2006 edition of 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die.

I think the book is good at portraying women in a constant war zone as well you can see the mirror image of how women are treated all over the world in peace or war.

Yasmin I finished Dante's Inferno yesterday. Now I'm mulling through poems of John Keats (!). For Oscar Wilde admirers there is some exciting news I found out today...

message 11896: by [deleted user] (last edited Jun 13, 2009 02:15PM) (new)

Brava, Yamin! I always love it when I hear that someone has decided to tackle this brilliant and daunting poem. In Italian? or Translation, and if so, whose?

...and don't keep us hanging about the Wilde news....

message 11897: by [deleted user] (new)

Couldn't get my audio book of Animal Farm to work (who knows what I did to it...), so I started The Enchanted April and it's absolutely charming. There is a movie too, with Alfred Molina and Miranda Richardson, which looks fabulous and which I am now going to have to track down.

Anybody seen it and/or read it?

English translation by Elio Zappulla and as he says not a literal translation, I don't know a word of Italian.
The Oscar Wilde news care of the Oscar Wilde Society (UK) that two authors have finished editing a pervious unpublished work of his from 1876. Mr. Robert Ross had the work to include in his published collection but never finished editing it before he died. Thomas Wright and Donald Mead are the editors. I believe it is called Homer's Women.
