Diane, I'm almost finished with Edgar Sawtelle. I'm really enjoying it now. I'm glad I stuck with it. Love the part about the bread in the grocery store.

Petra X (petra-x) I'm reading Nim Chimsky: The Chimp who would be Human by Elizabeth Hess. Its too much about the researchers and not enough about the research, but still quite a good read.

I have Edgar Sawtelle to read but never get round to starting it.

I think his books put people in two big groups. I had more the contrary. Loved A thousend splendid suns but didn't reallu like The kite runner.
I absolutely hated The lovely bones...at least the cover had a nice blue color:-) I have to admit that the color of the cover made me finally buy it after I heard lots of good about it. Oterwise I probably would have kept picking it up but wouldn't have read it.

message 10756: by Michelle (new)

Michelle I'm also a huge Kingsolver fan!! She is an amazing writer, and her books are all so different, from the sweet, funny Bean Trees to the epic, haunting Poisonwood Bible. I just wish she had more, I've read all of hers and loved them all for different reasons.

Oooh, I'm intrigued. :o) I hope I enjoy it too. I might finish today. When I do, I'll post an update for you and those who added it to their TBR.

message 10760: by Jeanie (new)

Jeanie I'm reading Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese. Very interesting and engrossing novel about Ethiopia in the 1950s. The title - Cutting for Stone - refers to surgery to remove kidney or bladdar stones, and is also from the Hippocoratic Oath. The story centers around a hospital that struggles to treat people in a nation that is struggling toward independence.

Heather and Diane, my book club has been meeting for 13 years, so we've read about 150 books together. Poisonwood Bible remains our all-time favorite!

I had received In The Woods and the 2nd book, The Likeness together as gifts. After reading ITW, I'm a little hesitant to read The Likeness, if the ending is going to be the same.

My fiancee just finished ITW and was less than thrilled with it as well.

Lydia, it takes a little bit to get into the story. Be patient at least until you start learning the details of the Vanger family. That's when it really caught my attention. The beginning was a bit slow for me, and I wondered if I would end up liking it. Hope you end up enjoying it too.

message 10773: by [deleted user] (new)

Sacred Games just wasn't doing anything for me... I have too much to do and to read and 1000 pages was too much. Interesting, however. If I find it in the library I may try again.

Will now read Touchstone, which I bought last December (!). Hope that's good... I've had a couple of duds recntly.

message 10774: by Claire (new)

Claire | 30 comments I just finished reading Stasiland yesterday which I really enjoyed. Having been to Berlin a couple of years ago it was interesting being able to imagine what it was when the wall was up. The stories are quite disturbing, but I really loved the way the book was written. Took me a while to get through (non-fiction usually does) but it's a great read.

So then yesterday I startedI Capture the Castle. I'm up to Chapter 5 and I already love this book!

message 10782: by Melet (new)

Melet Hello everyone - this is my first post to a Goodreads group - been reading you guys for a few weeks! I am curently reading Desperation by Stephen King. I am a King fan, but this is the first one I have read that I would classify as horror. The others I have read and adored were fantasy, perhaps some science fiction, but not even close to horror. Actually one of my pet peeves is that the bookstores always place his work in the Horror section - not accurate and it keeps some people from reading what is some of the finest modern literature. Anyway, happy reading!!

Dorie (dorieann) | 430 comments Welcome to the group, Melet!

I finished Shatter" by Michael Robotham, which was a great thriller. I had a hard time setting it down. I'm now reading How I Paid For College: A Tale of Sex, Theft, Friendship and Musical Theatre, which is very funny and just what I needed to kick off my week of vacation (spending it at home).

Don't worry... it was the one I liked the best!! I envy you, really. I'd love to be able to start all over again, never having read them, I mean. I hope you haven't heard too much about them to spoil it all.

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Laura, can we read HP out of order or do we have to read in order?

message 10788: by Laura (new)

Laura | 3 comments I am reading "Etiquette For Outlaws" by Rob Cohen & David Wollock. Great stuff! It talks about social norms for the not so run of the mill person. Like me! There is an entire chapter About tattooing and piercings and they are SO on the money coming from someone who has been getting tattooed for 20 years! Other topics such as 'Traditional Vices' ans 'Sex' of course. Funny. True and worth reading.

Funny - sounds like you either love one or the other of his books, but not both. I "read" both on audio, but I don't think changed my reaction to either. I started my morning on Friday with The Lovely Bones and it did not start my day out well - what a sad/horrifying first chapter!

Laura (apenandzen) Hmm, Booker nominee...looks like a winner.

message 10800: by Maureen (new)

Maureen I read Breakfast at Tiffany's (Capote) yesterday for my face to face book club. We're reading the novella and then watching the movie to compare the two. I've only seen bits and pieces of the movie so far, but from that, it seems that the novella and movie are quite different. I'm planning on watching the movie next weekend, so I'll find out for sure then.

Just started Not Buying It: My Year Without Shopping (Levine).
