Sherrie (splummer54) Mandy,
Hi! Yes I liked Angels & Demons very much. It was very intriguing and kept me wondering if they were going to save the Vatican. I have The Glass Castle but haven't started it yet. I am now reading The Book of The Dead by Patricia Cornwell. Almost done with that one. Then on to..........Don't know for sure. Haven't made a decision yet. Take Care!!

message 53: by Jeannie (new)

Jeannie | 8 comments A Little way into a book titled "The Tenderness of Wolves" by, Stef Penney. This novel is a mystery written by an author from the U.K. The book was long listed for the Orange Prize and it won the Costa Book of The Year for 2006. (formally the Whitbread Award)
Having said all that......so far I am enjoying the book a lot :>))

Finished Fourth Bear, and thought it was ...eh.... just ok. Took forever for the story to really get going. And I dont think I care for Ffordes writing overall.

Also finished reading Dead Fathers Club. That book was really good. The only complaint I have is that the narrator, Philip, was supposed to be 11 years old and the book felt like it was being told by someone much younger than that. (my son is 10, and seems to have a better grasp of the english language than Philip does). But I didnt let that stop me from throughly enjoying the book.

Now I am reading Lamb by Christopher Moore. I except great things from this one! Hope I am not setting myself up for failure.....

Since my last post I have read Post Office by Chuck Bukowski (a very quick, easy read. I love the style this guys writes in. Very grumpy guy-next-door), Earth Abides by George Stewart (took me about a week to finish this one, it drags on alot, but very interesting take on one mans struggle to rebuild society and community after a devasting plauge wipes out almost all of humanity), and I am currently reading The Princess Bride. ---> Im am only up to the part when Fezzik is preparing to kill the man in black, and I am loving the fact that the movie has stuck very closely to the book. I can hear the characters talking as I read (cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Andre the Giant....)

message 58: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Since my last post I finished Water for Elephants, The Glass House by Jeannette Walls, and now I am halfway through The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield. I think The Thirteenth Tale is going to be one of my all time favorites because it has a great story with lots of mystery to keep me guessing, and the general idea of the love of reading and books in general.

I am currently 120 pages into 'Notes Of A Dirty Old Man' by Charles Bukowski. It has been YEARS since i have read a book of short stories... I like his style, very gritty and straight foward. Short stories just really arent my thing... This may be my last attempt at reading one for quite awhile. I prefer getting lost in a full novel... following characters for more than two or three pages.

Jodie (jodiemill) | 44 comments Haven't been reading much of anything lately. I'm too busy packing and getting ready to move. That puts a damper on any sort of reading I want to do. Too tired at night when I finally do sit down to read and I end up falling asleep.

Fenixbird SandS | 403 comments Certain been hop skipping around with my books lately! Cannot seem to quite make it thru The Kingdom: Arabia & the House of Sa'ud (fascinating read...Saudia Arabia banned this book!)...not sure I want it to end.

Obligatorily pulsing thru 2 books loaned me on teaching..The Differentiated Classroom: Responding to the Needs of All Learners by Carol Ann Tomlinson & Teaching Outside by LouAnn ...My list of wanna-buys has grown in this category and that of language (I have been a language student for many years).I recently re-read Venus and Mars on a Date by John Gray (which I have loaned out to a foreign female friend who does not quite "get it"--our American concept of "dating" or "cat and mouse" as I like to call it! LOL).....

Um....and The Giver I better finish listening to the tapes (& remove my foreign language tapes which I have resolved to try to study at least once or twice a week). The more I hear about the Newberry medal winner (The Giver by Lois Lowry) the more I want to sit down & just read it cover to cover!! Off to Boookman's to search for The Fifth Child & In Pursuit of the English by Doris Lesser OH AND Black House by Stephen King!

Like Scottk & many others here...if there were but time--for all the reading & Yoga & Tai Chi I am trying to learn & do regularly....

right now i am about half way thru A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore... And absolutely loving it. His characters are great.... The storyline keeps you wondering what the heck is going on. Just when you think you got it down, he throws something else into the works, and your left scratching your head again...

I liked it so much, I ran out last nite with the family, and after dinner, we all went to borders (10% off total purchase) and everyone got a book. I bought his novel Blood Sucking Fiends...

Cindy (wanna_read_all_the_books) It's snowing out and I'm ready to snuggle under a quilt and read the rest of the day away. I picked up You Suck and A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore and One For the Money by Janet Evanonich at the library earlier today.

OFTM is a re-read. I wanted something light-hearted and funny that I could zip through. Besides, after all this time, Stephanie, Ranger, Lula and Morelli feel like old friends.

I haven't read any of Moore's books yet but I've heard, and read, good things about them so I'm looking forward to getting to both of those as well. Happy reading ~

I'm usually scared to read a popular book, because a lot of times I don't think it's really all that it's hyped up to be...but there are several that I have on my faves list because I dared read them...

Loved Loved Loved A Dirty Job. Easily one of my (many) favorites!
I started Bringing Out The Dead last nite, about 70 pages into it... I have wanted this book for ages, but its older and was out of print, or pulled from the shelves. Finally ordered it online through a used book store and it came yesterday! So glad I have it.

My hubby is a Paramedic, so i cant sort of relate to it. Plus I liked the movie when it came out. The author was a consultant for the film, so I may have to rewatch it when I finish the novel to see just how close it ran to the book.

message 71: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) I feel for you Jodie. When we moved two years ago all I kept thinking was "I can't wait to be settled so I can read again!"

message 72: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) Currently I am reading Eat Pray Love. I am enjoying it, as I can relate to some of the feelings the author has about marriage and children and how it is perfectly ok if one chooses a different path in one's life. But I do want to eat my way through Italy and find the pizza parlor in Naples that she visits!

Started The Stolen Child, two chapters in. Interesting concept. Children being stolen by faries/changelings and they live each others lives... one willingly, and one, not so willingly.....

Is everyone so fully enthralled by their current reads that they cant find time to share them with us? (sniff sniff)

I finished The Stolen Child last nite. I wasnt sure how i was going to like it. But i quickly found myself unwilling to put it down, and once it was down, i was dying to get back to it.

A big part of that had to do with the fact that I wasnt exactly sure where the book was going to take me in the end. I really enjoyed it and thought the ending tied everything together quite well.

One complaint tho... I could have used a little less description with the whole symphony/organ/piano thing. that was a bit overdone at times I thought.

Onto The Preservationist now....

Lisa Reading has been taking a back seat to sick kids. I was reading The Wednesday Letters by Jason F. Wright which was a short read but I was hoping to find the rest of the Odd Thomas series in just a few days then the kids got sick so I couldn't go find it. I read Honeymoon by James Patterson and Howard Roughan (great thriller and a first for me--I had never read a James Patterson)Now I am reading Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult.

Shary,
I dont know why, but I always mean to pick up A Prayer For Owen Meany and then when I get to the bookstore, I just dont. Everyone always has great things to say about it too.... One of these days I will have to force myself to buy it.

message 80: by Jen (new)

Jen | 278 comments I am reading "The Book Thief" and am enjoying it. It's a pretty easy read (YA fiction) and has an interesting point of view, narrated by Death. I have to agree with Lori's comment on this one though, when I put it down, I'm not rushing to get back to it.

By the way, I'm new to the group and notice that everyone seems to read VERY quickly. I'm lucky to get one in a week. I'm jealous!

message 81: by Blujbird (new)

Blujbird Twig | 12 comments Hey Jen don't feel bad...I have been taking my time with reading these days...about a book a month. I can't really seem to find a really good one lately mostly because I don't know what I want to read.

A prayer for Owen Meany? That book is awesome! I think Owen Meany would go down as one of my favorite characters in a book.

A Prayer for Owen Meany has been in my 'to-read' pile for several, several months. I don't know why. I am enjoying it. It's funny but also a little sad. I'm about 3/4 of the way thru and hope to finish it this weekend.

Ky, what do you think of that book? i liked the whole idea of it, but thought it got a little slow at times and waaaay too descriptive. The author seemed to linger too much on the furniture and texture and reminded me of an antique lover who just happened to write a book... or maybe that is just the way i am remembering it. I thought overall tho, (not counting that) it was a decent read!

Finished Sharp Teeth last nite. it reads fairly quickly, tho a big part of that is due to the fact that is written in poem form (free verse, not rhyming, thank god!), which means less words on a page. But it was a really fast paced, page turner of a novel. It was totally worth the full price of the harcover.

However, i am currently reading Ghost - by Alan Lightman, and i also bought this one in hardcover (gulp!) and so far it is NOT worth the money i dropped on it. the first few pages started out great, the narrator is just writing stuff down and you think your are going to be taken for this great rollercoaster of a ride, and then, all the other chapters are written in third person, and talk alot about the past, and plah... get to the good stuff already. isnt there any good stuff? I hope the first chapter wasnt a full out tease. That would upset me.

Has anyone else read this? does it get better? its really slow right now....
