Heather | 7 comments I am into dog books lately. I have a golden retriever and I want to learn more about how they think, act, communicate, etc. I am really into understanding dog psychology.

I am currently reading: Animals Make Us Human: Creating the Best Life for Animals by Temple Grandin, Catherine Johnson

I highly recommend it.

Surely - so far so good - it "doesn't sound" like a book I would like - but it really is not so much about Zombies and really more "what if" - somewhat similar to the Stand in some ways.

Catherine | 175 comments Mel, I'm with you! Haven't had much time to read - feels like I've been reading Stardust for ages.

message 9854: by Ros (new)

Ros I am reading Hogfather - Terry Pratchett & A Home for Rose - Jon Katz.

Hi Jessica. I started reading it a while back and only got to the part where she was in the kitchen with her dead mother. How far are you? I stopped there because it was so disturbing. Let me know if it gets any better and if its worth reading. Thanks

OMG. Marci you explained how I feel about my books so well. Now if I can just get my husband and kids to get it. LOL. I feel the same way. Welcome. Welcome.

message 9858: by Drew (new)

Drew | 1 comments I read World War Z, and highly recommend it

For some odd reason, I've taken a liking to science theory, stuff like the 5th dimension and space-time. I recommend Michi Kaku as an author for that

message 9859: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 1000 comments Kelly, I am about 20 pages further than that. I can't really say I am enjoying it but I don't dislike it either. Helen is just such a different character, I really want to find out what her motivation is for doing the things she does.

message 9860: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey Just started Tiger Moon and loving it.

message 9861: by JuliAnna (last edited Mar 27, 2009 09:30AM) (new)

JuliAnna | 85 comments Drew, I've been meaning to read Kaku's Physics of the Impossible and his intro to quantum field theory. There has been an effort lately to try and revive the goodreads group Science and Inquiry. I was going to suggest that our May reading be a physics book. One of Michio Kaku's books would be perfect.

Mosca, glad you liked Water for Elephants. I hope you are one of the folks who ends up loving Perdido Street Station. I wish I was. I'm still glad I read it, and I'll try the next volume at some point.

message 9862: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 204 comments I get that Jessica. Keep me posted and let me know if you think it was worth it to keep going. Thanks

JG (Introverted Reader) This week I finally finished Winter's Tale. What a difficult book to plug through! The language is gorgeous, but there's so much symbolism that I had to slow down my reading and try to figure out what was going on. I finally gave up on making sense of it and just read it, hoping it would all come together in a blinding flash at the end. It didn't, for me, anyway.

I needed some light reading after that, so I read A Great and Terrible Beauty. I really liked it, but I didn't love it. But I promise I did really like it, (G)Emma!

Also, Heir to the Shadows. A strong second book in the series, but I didn't enjoy it quite as much as the first.

Now I'm about halfway through Artemis Fowl The Arctic Incident, the second in that series. These kids books are a lot of fun.

Stephanie (sbez05) | 556 comments Started A Great and Terrible Beauty tonight. I'm enjoying it so far - I'm really liking Libba Bray's style.

Listening to Little Women... it's my very first experience with an audio book... not sure I like it (listening to a book, I mean) but will see/hear it through... and my first experience with Little Women. Will have to read it at some point, I'm getting distracted and can't follow the story.

message 9866: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments Finished listening to Plum Lucky by Janet Evanovich. The reader for her books is absolutely astounding. Her voices for the various characters make them come to life in your head (no jokes here people). I love, love, love reading her books this way.

Also finished So Long, See You Tomorrow. Hmmm, this one gives me pause. Have to really think about the story and the style before I commit to an opinion.

This week has rocked, also finished The Associate by John Grisham last night. I like Grisham and wasn't sure what to expect after hearing a criticism of the ending falling flat and seeing that others have been quite critical. For me, it wasn't a bad read. Kept me interested, but nothing gut wrenching. It was pretty good, not great.

Now I am on to Those Who Save Us by Jenna Blum. Just 20 something pages into it, but like the style of writing. Also, still reading Fidali's Way and really like it.

message 9867: by Allison (new)

Allison Justine- how are you liking JS&MN so far. i've been plugging away since january. not only is the book huge, but the chapters are so long, it's hard for me to even finish one in the short spurts of time i've had.

Robin- how did you like alphabet of thorn? i'd never heard of it until you posted, and the review seems intriguing.

I just finished watching both seasons of the Tudors so now I'm just in the mood to stay at King Henry's court.

message 9873: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) Allison,
I'm a few chapters into Jonathon Strange's section. I find it refreshing after 180 pages of what a loner Mr. Norrell is. I feel like it's taking a really long time to read (I know it's almost 800 pages, but I'm a pretty fast reader), I'm just not making the kind of progress I think I should be...250ish pages in almost 3 days?
But I digress. I am enjoying it, but I'm not too far in yet. How far into the book are you?

message 9874: by Marisa (new)

Marisa (psyko_kittie12) | 117 comments I am reading Confessions of and Ugly Stepsister. I wasnt thrilled with Wicked or Son of a Witch, but then I read Lost and now I decided to read more by Gregory Maguire. Still too early in the book to decide what I think of it.

Most all of us found it a slow read. Some of us, myself included, found it worth the effort and really liked it.

His stuff is so weird sometimes. I read Wicked and Mirror Mirror. I thought Mirror Mirror was much better out of the two.

message 9877: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I really disliked Wicked. I had been so looking forward to it, too. I had to force myself to finish.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments I found Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell a slow read, but I enjoyed it greatly.

Jackie (thenightowl) Kandice wrote: "I really disliked Wicked. I had been so looking forward to it, too. I had to force myself to finish."

Yeah towards the end I had forced myself to finish it. It felt like it took me forever to read it. Though I have to say, if you get a chance to see the play you should do so. It's a much different story and way lighter.

message 9880: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 413 comments I felt the same way. The book was not my fave. Has anyone read any of his other books?? Are they any better??

A friend of mine went to the play and she said it was great so maybe I will give that a shot next time it passes through.

message 9881: by Kandice (new)

Kandice The play was terrific, which is why I was so jazzed about the book. Two totally different things!

message 9882: by Chrystal (new)

Chrystal | 144 comments I just finished Breaking Dawn.....I thought it was great.....I hated to see the series end. Now I'm on to The Lucky One by Nicholas Sparks.

message 9883: by [deleted user] (new)

Started The Handmaid's Tale, intensely disturbing, but so beautiful at the same time.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments I found The Handmaid's Tale quite a read, Hayes. Fascinating if scary.

message 9885: by [deleted user] (new)

I know what you mean. What would you call it, sci-fi or fantasy?

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments A dystopia?

message 9887: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Definitely dystopia. I like anything in that genre.

Debby | 3804 comments During my recent 9-day vacation to FL, I listened to

Water for Elephants by (can't remember right now)
Lucky by Alice Sebold
Blindsighted by Karin Slaughter
It was so nice to check off 3 books I'd had in my TBR's for quite a while.
Now I'm lostening to The Rainmaker by John Grisham. I'm also going to serserve Flum Lucky (posted above). I do all my fiction reading by CD, so I'm always interested in good narrators of good books!

JG (Introverted Reader) Just finished Artemis Fowl The Arctic Incident. If you liked the first one, you'll like this one. I think I liked it better than the first actually.

I had grabbed The Russian Concubine to start on next, but then Judy made me remember that I have His Majesty's Dragon here too. Now I can't decide.

message 9893: by Allison (new)

Allison Justine- I'm about 200+ pages into JS&MN. I found Norell quite boring too, but interesting at the same time. I really enjoyed the magic he did at the church, making the statues talk, and the story that followed.
I'm sure that it will be worth it in the end, it's just taking so long to get to the end.

message 9894: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 437 comments I just finished The Forgotten Man: A New History of the Great Depression. So, to start something completely different, I am going to read Fablenhaven: Secrets of the Dragon Sanctuary..it's the 4th in a series of YA fantasy.
