Just started reading Kate Atkinson's book WHEN WILL THERE BE GOOD NEWS? Anyone read it? I'm liking it so far--she's an excellent writer. Characterization is especially good.

Cait, I have heard very good things about SHADOW OF THE WIND and it's on my TBR list. I really liked (though not quite as much as THE KITE RUNNER) A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS, but, if you haven't yet read WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP, I highly recommend it.Dorie and Gloria, Loved, loved, loved MOLOKA'I! Thanks for the heads up about his new one!

My spanish friend told me that it is very good too!
I am reading this wonderful book Book of the lost books. It tells about books that got lsot, were destroyed ...from when things were 'written down'. It also tells a bit about the history, how it happened..... It is great. Also reading Two for the dough. I have a feeling I read it already but can't remember much.
I just finished ONE FOR THE MONEY, and am just starting TWO FOR THE DOUGH! I can see I am going to love this series. I am also still reading QUEEN OF SCOTTS, THE TRUE STORY OF MARY STUART.
Ann from S.C. wrote: "I just finished ONE FOR THE MONEY, and am just starting TWO FOR THE DOUGH! I can see I am going to love this series. I am also still reading QUEEN OF SCOTTS, THE TRUE STORY OF MARY STUART."Ann, we will be reading it at the same time!

I'm currently reading Hunting and Gathering and really liking it so far. Whoever did the translation (from French to English) did a wonderful job - sometimes books that have been translated don't flow as well, but this is lovely.Went and picked up a bunch of holds at the library as well - I have in my possession A Great and Terrible Beauty, Rebel Angels, Bel Canto, The Art of Racing in the Rain, and One for the Money. Whew! Better get reading!
I finished Watchmen and have started In the Woods...still plugging along through War & Peace also...enjoying it but its just so long...

I have high hopes for Garp.
I think I'm over the half-way point in The Alienist now, and still enjoying it greatly. They just went to the first public showing of movies in New York. Great little vignette.
Jamie, what did you think of Watchmen? I'm thinking about picking up the book at some point, as my boyfriend would like to see the movie.

Barb, Glad to hear that Blindness is going well. (smiles inside!) All The Names was a bit slow for me, but in the end, once I finished and digested it, it was sooo worth the read. It get better the farther in you go... trust me!
I love some of the books you have on tap next, and the others I really want to read. I would suggest going with EL&IC..such a great story with a quirkly narrator! OR The Stupidest Angel, by far my favorite Christopher Moore novel!

Jeane wrote: "I am reading this wonderful book Book of the lost books. It tells about books that got lost, were destroyed ..."Jeanne, it sounds fascinating. Is that the correct title? I did a search here and on Amazon, and I can't find anything close to it.
I finished up The Audacity of Hope finally! It was very readable, but not a quick read at all.I also finished up Dark Fire, which I enjoyed as much as Dissolution.
I read Water for Elephants, and I really, really liked that one.
Now I'm starting The Book of the Dead by Lincoln Child and Douglas Preston. This says it's the third of a series, but it's the only one I have. Does anyone know if it matters if you read these in order?
I've been switching back and forth between books a lot the past week. Before I took a break to look at Goodreads I was reading The Amityville Horror by Jay Anson. (Because it's Friday the 13th)Other than that I'm working on: Tantalize by Cynthia Leitich Smith, The Luxe by Anna Godbersen, Shadow Kiss (Vampire Academy, Book 3) by Richelle Mead, I Am Legend by Richard Matheson and Watchmen by Alan Moore
I guess you can tell I'm a little restless at the moment.
I read The Zookeeper's Wife last year. I enjoyed it, but would have liked more details. It always amazes me how people made it through such a terrible time in history.I am currently reading Angela's Ashes. I've only read about 75 pages so far. It's good, but not necessarily great.

JG, You do not have to read Jeffery Deaver's book in order. I have too, but thats just me. They are all great!
I have just finished Stern Men and was terribly disappointed. I love Elizabeth Gilbert and Eat, Pray, Love but fiction is not her best voice. I recently heard her speak and she admitted she was not creative and she enjoys writing non-fiction. I think it will be best venue for writing. Personal essays and memoirs are her strong suite. It's tough when you really love an author but not all of their work.
Cait wrote: "Lori wrote: "Barb, Blindness is an all time favorite of mine. Jose Saramago has a unique writting styl..."Cait, You really do have a dilemma. Extremely Loud, Shadow of the Wind, and A Thousand Splendid Suns are pretty much neck and neck for great reads. I would probably vote #1 Shadow, #2 Extremely Loud, and #3 A Thousand Spendid Suns, but that's just me.
Jeane wrote: "Linda wrote: "Jenna wrote: "Just started Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. Heard many great things about it and am really liking it so far."All the buzz about this one is true and more...."
I have to admit I am prejudiced, but Shadow of the Wind is at the top of my 5 all time reads.
I finished reading The Book Thief last night so now I've started reading A Complicated Kindness by Miriam Toews.
Brittany wrote: "Beginning [b:The Friday Night Knitting Club|17204|The Friday Night Knitting Club|Kate Jacobs|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1166..."Are you enjoying "The friday Night Knitting Club?" I did enjoy reading this book.
Liz wrote: "Jamie, what did you think of Watchmen? I did enjoy both the novel and the movie though.

So far, so good! I needed to pick something up lighter and modern after I read "Til We Have Faces" (C.S. Lewis). Have you read the sequel?
I'm currently reading The Trial by Franz Kafka. It's the first time I read Kafka and I found this book different from anything I've ever read before. I'm in the second chapter and I have a feeling that I am going to like this book!
Carrie wrote: "The Zookeeper's Wife A War Story" Carrie, please get back and let us know how you liked this one. I almost picked it up a couple of months ago. I think the only reason I didn't is because I have a few other WWII books on my TBR shelf.
It was OK.... It was worth reading, but a bit slow and too-history-ish for me. I wanted to know more about the people. We didn't get to know the characters as much as I would have liked.
Just finished The Brass Verdict by Michael Connolly and started The Magician's Book (I won from Good Reads) last night.
Susanna wrote: "I also enjoyed The Friday Night Knitting Club."I got to about page 15 and was a bit disgruntled that the author decided to use a word I find highly vulgar. It's a knitting book (kinda)... I did NOT expect that at all.
finished The Sisters Mortland by Sally Beauman last night. good read, pretty different from what i expected, but i enjoyed it.next up is The Secret Between us from Barabar Delinsky, that's for a book group this coming Monday. then, it'll be One Fifth Avenue from Candace Bushnell, which is for a book group next Friday. lots of reading to do, but i'm thinking it should all go quickly.
JuliAnna wrote: "Jeane wrote: "I am reading this wonderful book Book of the lost books. It tells about books that got lost, were destroyed ..."Jeanne, it sounds fascinating. Is that the correct title? I did a sea..."
yes, it is written by stuart kelly.

Mosca wrote: "I've just finished reading The Sparrow by [a:Mary Doria Russell|4007|Mary Doria Russell|htt..."I adore that book. It's one of the few books that has a sequel (Children of God) that is just as precious, in its own way. I read it for the first time right after my college roommate died and I was questioning the beauty of existence. Incredibly powerful.
Lisa wrote: "Just picked up this morning "Cold Comfort Farm" by Stella Gibbons. Has anyone ever seen the movie? I love the movie and so far it seems like the movie really stuck to the tone of the book."I've seen the movie. I liked the movie and the book about equally, they each had their own charm. I don't know how I made it to my mid-twenties before I heard about that book. It reminded me of a more sarcastic I Capture The Castle.
Was reading The HIstorian and when I didn't have it in the car during a car pool pit stop, I started Little Bee (terrible splurge yesterday). Can't put down Little Bee. Great book by a new author!
Jeanne, thanks so much for posting the link for The Book of Lost Books. I don't know why I could find it myself. (Maybe because I was searching Amazon from within Goodreads.) Anyway, it is a fascinating premise for a book. I can't wait to check it out.
Michael - How are the Vampire Academy books? I am a big Twilight fan so I do want to read the Vampire Academy series.
So I am still slowly makingmy way through The Dunciad--only a few pages here and there before bed. However, I've started Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors as it needs to be done by Wednesday.
