What are you reading?
Those are the kind of stories my Gaby loves best. She has a dark sense of humor too. I will definetely read it with her then... Thanks!
See, I told you guys/gals you should have voted for my pick, Book of Lost Things, this month! *L* I don't want to have to bribe you all to get votes for next month, but keep it in mind ok:P Perhaps that and The Road since everyone is already talking about it, eh? I live for our monthly picks because they "force" me to get my hands on those books...and with 500+ books on the TBR list, I'll take any way of checking a few off the list!! *L*
I plan on reading New Moon and Eclipse this summer. I really liked Twilight but I'm starting to wonder if I liked it so much because my students loved the series and would fight over who got to read them next. Did you ever see the Runaway Bride with Julia Roberts? There's a scene where she realizes she likes eggs prepared the way her boyfriend/fiance du jour likes them prepared and it dawns on her she doesn't know how SHE likes them prepared. So, the next scene is her sitting at a table with eggs prepared in myriad ways! So, do I like Twilight because my students liked it or because I like it? Hmmmm
Saramago didn't use too many quotation marks in THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO JESUS CHRIST I can tell youlistening to Stalin's Ghost by Martin Cruz Smith
really good
Hi! I just joined this group, so hi everyone. I have been reading Report to Greco by Nikos Kazantzakis for a while now, as well as Churchill by Roy Jenkins. I just finished (yesterday) Cotillion by Georgette Heyer (which I thoroughly enjoyed) and now I need to pick something that is fiction...maybe something by Joanne Harris. She has some great books. Anyone heard of her?
I just finished two books:Lancelot by Walker Percy
The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
Now I'm about to start Son of a Witch by Gregory Maguire.
Welcome Shannon! I have read a couple by Joanne Harris - Chocolat and Four Quarters of the Orange - and really liked both of them. Though I did try to read the sequel to Chocolat that just came out (I can't remember the title off hand) and couldn't really get into it.
I read Gentlemen and Players by Harris last year and I really liked it. I've been wanting to read Chocolat by her because I love the movie. Johnny Depp - yummy :) I've been reading The Once and Future King because I have to. I've been enjoying it, but I took a break to read Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Yes, I was inspired to read it because of LOST. I can't believe I've never read the book before - I've been laughing out loud all day because of the puns and my cats are rather annoyed with me because of it.
Gosh I finally finished Odd Thomas this summer has really kicked butt on my reading time.I can't believe it took me so long to read two books.Almost done with Twilight.I just loved both books so much.
i just started the black echo by mishael connely and im also reading river god by wilbur smith there both very good so far!!!
Mole -- Black Echo has been on my TBR-ASAP shelf for a couple months now. I LOVE Connelly, but I started with the Concrete Blond, so I've been meaning to back track & read the first few Harry Bosch books. I'd love to hear what you think of it when you finish it!!
Nerraj, Metamorphosis was really interesting. Kafka has a way with words like no other when describing all the struggles a man faces when he suddenly becomes a bug!
I finally finished Lancelot last nite (stayed up till 1230am to get it done). I think my copy was missing a few pages. the novel was over but didnt feel like it ended. I hate books like that. In the famous words of Spongebob... 'BARNACLES!!"
Now I am at a loss as to what to read next. I want to stick to my Lost Lit List, as that is what Ive been reading all summer so far.... Logan is reading Brothers K, so it would be cool to read along with someone, we could discuss as we go. But the book is huge...
Im still thinking about it....

Go for the Brothers K! It's a big book, but definitely flows quickly once you get into it. I've just been reading it in spurts so far and have made a hefty dent. I loves me some Dostoevsky and would love having someone to talk it through with as I go.
I read it years ago but as I recall it was a hard read.It sort of plodded along slooowlllyy...:)Good luck!If I have misremembered and it improves please let me know.
Yay! A partner in crime (& Punishment). Yeah, I find it hard to resist awful puns. I just started on Part II Book V. I love that this book is broken up into smallish sections like that so it's easy to pace myself.
Right now, it's Play Dirty by Sandra Brown. Just started it last night & with chauffering kids around this morning, haaven't read much it.
opps.. which pic, the one there now or the one before that where i was looking up? i changed it twice today. I like this one better -- haa haa. (plus it matches the one im using on myspace)
LORENAI LIKED TGAJC AS IT TOLD ME MORE ABOUT JC AND THE EVENTS OF HIS LIFE THAN I KNEW AND I LIKE SAGAMAO
I finished Moon in the Mango Tree this afternoon...it was good, very descriptive...I liked it but didn't love it and I'm not really sure why.I'm reading Billie Letts newest book Made in the U.S.A now...so far so good...I've loved all her other books and look forward to what's to come.
Stacie, did you like Raw Shark Texts? I just ordered it and am thinking that it'll be top of the to-read stack when it arrives.
*LOL* I'd have beat you but my kittie was demanding some loving so I was hampered with one handed typing. But you did win your coke fair and square
I really liked it. I liked the concept and some of the points about language and words creating the meaning really struck me. It hasn't happened in awhile, but this book is really sticking with me and I can't stop thinking about it. It goes back to the comments about being sad a book is over. Also, not only did I find the ideas in the book and the idea of the book interesting, but I also liked the way it was written; not just the language, style, etc., but also the way it was formatted and they way he was able to use the page...if that makes any sense.
Totally.Having read it I know what you mean.I thought it was pretty clever and I really enjoyed how he played with the concepts and with the structure.
I have Raw Shark Texts on my shelf and shall be moving that up the list now, sounds very interesting.I'm reading Darkly Dreaming Dexter at the moment, I was pretty upset I hadn't read any when it started on TV this week but thought I'd tape the show anyway and I went to watch it the next day in my lunch break and it didn't record!!! Oh, was soooooooooooo unhappy.
Anyways, I'm liking the book and am hoping to read more soon, unfortunately I haven't read a lot in the last fortnight but I'm hoping to get back into the swing of things soon.
Dexter is such a great series. I hated when I read the last page of the last book... But at least I can watch it too :) I cant wait for the third season to start this fall!
Hey Logan...I saw you had A Clockwork Orange on your shelf. Let's try to read that this fall. You game?
Physics for Entertainment by Yakov Perelman. It is entertaining but I think you at least have to have a feigning interest in physics, i.e. how the physical world works.
I'm currently reading The Kite Runner and once I've finished that I will be making a start on The Stand.I'm also reading The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, this is my at work book, to read when it is quiet or when I'm on my lunch.
Hayley, let me know how The Stand is? I don't read Stephen King, I haven't even seen The Shining - horror and scary stuff gives me nightmares. *blush* But I've heard The Stand is such a great book. I want to be warned of how creepy it is!
I'm now halfway through the road, and am enjoying it. I got over the difficulties with the grammar pretty quickly. I'm not sure that I think it's wonderful (sorry Lori) although my opinion may change further on in the book. Even so, it's a good read.
