message 802: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Emma,really?!!Bummer

message 803: by Katie (new)

Katie (hockeygoddess) | 257 comments Kasi -- I had trouble getting into Twilight too, but it did pick up after the midway point!

I know Emma liked New Moon, but it was my least favorite of the three out so far. I LOVED Eclipse. And I also have pre-ordered Breaking Dawn, so I'll own a copy the day it comes out...I spent too much time on the waiting list with the other books, so I took the leap to pay nearly full price to get it right away:)

message 804: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments I started The Brothers Karamazov last night. I haven't made it too deeply into it yet, but so far I'm remembering why I love reading Dostoevsky. Such a beautiful way with words.

message 805: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments Ya, the sale is over. And I think I'm going to have to buy Breaking Dawn (surprisingly, Eclipse is THAT good). I personally think New Moon was better than Twilight. Bella develops a hint or personality and backbone.

message 806: by Leslie (new)

Leslie Hickman (bkread2) You know until this site I had not really heard of the Twillight series. I am so out of touch evidently. I am going to have to break down and start to read at least the first one! Right now for pure pleasure I am working my way through some spin-offs from Jane Austen's novels. Other than that this month for my book clubs I am reading Anne Bronte's The Tennant of Wildfell Hall, The Knitting Circle by Ann Hood and also The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James. Yep 3 reading groups!! 2 of my groups sometimes read books I have already finished...or my library does not have a copy I can check out on the third group...so I do more than one to keep me busy!

message 807: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments I finished Strange Fits of Passion last night...it was good...not my favorite of her novels but interesting. I guess the fact that it's about an abused woman that made it a little hard to read...not that I've ever been abused but just the thought of it makes my blood boil a little you know. That this woman had no other recourse than to kill the guy. It makes me happy to know that there are at least more options for women today than at that time (book is set in the late 60's early 70's...in most places...though I know some men still get away with it.

Now I'm about half way through The Divorce Party by Laura Dave (Good Reads Author)...I had hoped to have time to read her other book before this came in but it's a 14 day book so I got to finish it before monday.

I don't know what it is but I keep picking up books with multiple narrators...the story shifting back and forth being told by different people. Several of the books I've read lately have been written that way...it was odd at first but I'm getting used to it.

message 808: by Tisha (last edited Jul 05, 2008 09:18AM) (new)

Tisha I just finished Obama's Dreams of my Father. outstanding read. powerful story. I particulaly enjoyed the "Kenya" section(section 3). I appreciated the story even more because it was written 10 years ago, before he was even a Junior Senator. I feel this makes his story more authentic. he is not censoring himself for the "american public."

I am about to start "The Center of Everything". It should be a quick read.

Tim (Mole) The Gunslinger (Mole) | 103 comments just finished the pillars of the earth excellent nameless by debra webb not bad starting catch22 joseph hellerman any body read it ?

message 810: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) Mole, I have heard really mixed reviews about it, I am always on the look out for it in the used book store, but don't have it yet. I will be interested to see what you think about it.

message 811: by Jim (new)

Jim | 26 comments Catch 22 is pretty funny but I haven't read it in a number of years

Just finished American Eve about turn of century America in 1900 - very good about young girl who becomes the "It Girl"

Just staring THE ZOOKEEPER'S WIFE - anyone like it?

message 812: by Sherry (new)

Sherry I've read and enjoyed Catch 22.It's pretty funny and I loved the main character and his attempts to resolve the dilemma he was in.

message 813: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments Finished The Divorce Party which turned out really good...started reading Harry, Revised by Mark Sarvas...the blurb sounding interesting but I already am disgusted by the main character so I don't have much hope of really enjoying the book...I'm on page 82 of 262 so we'll see maybe something will change my mind.

message 814: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments I just finished reading Cory Doctorow's Little Brother and really all I can say is WOW. Just WOW. This book blew me away from beginning to end and rekindled my interest in knowing the ins and outs of technology and keeping the surveillance state firmly in the realm of fiction. This is a vitally important book that I am so glad was written for young adults. Every young teen should read it. Well, everyone PERIOD should read it, but most especially the teens that make up its target audience. I will have far more to say on this book soon, but I think I'll try to cram it into a semi-coherent review.

Long story short: All of you should read this book and then you should all pass it on to your children to read.

message 815: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) Logan, Little Brother as in Big Brother is watching kind of thing? Because you know those are my favorite books ...

message 816: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Lorena, you hit it right on the nose. It's a book about a terrorist attack in San Francisco which leads to a huge crackdown by Homeland Security and a massive increase in surveillance. A group of kids band together to protest this loss of freedom and fight back. It's been a long time since a book moved me enough to have me actually shaking with anger at the bad guys, but this one did.

The great thing about Cory Doctorow are his views on copyright- he makes all of his books available on line for free for those interested in adapting them or translating them or just reading them. He explains why in the introduction to Little Brother. So if you don't want to shell out for the hard copy, and if you can stand reading on a computer screen for long enough, you can download it and read it here:

message 817: by Tisha (new)

Tisha I have serious problems. I started The Center of Everything today...read the first page... and realized I already read this book last summer! WTF....

Now i'm going to start something else! funny.

message 818: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Tisha, that's hilarious! I've never had that happen to me before, but it sounds like something that could (and probably will) happen to nearly every member of this group at some point. So so very many books.

message 819: by Liz (new)

Liz (hissheep) Uh oh, another addition to my already TBR (to-be-read) pile, as well as my library reserves! Loved the show, didn't know there was a book - and a series at that!

message 820: by Liz (new)

Liz (hissheep) I know you didn't ask for a suggestion ... BUT! You might want to pick up the first on your list "Water for Elephants" - GREAT READ! "The Little Friend" was interesting but not great and "Saturday" I tried but never finished.

message 821: by Liz (new)

Liz (hissheep) "Unaccustomed Earth" by Jhumpa Lahiri (author of "The Namesake"). This is a book of short stories, all involving people from Bengal - same premise of growing up in America, but living in and trying to break away from the traditions of the parents. Good, but doesn't leave me waiting anxiously for the next book by this author. PS Loved "The Namesake".

Tisha.. that is too funny! I cant say that has ever happened to me... !!

message 823: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty (kirstyreadsandcreates) | 610 comments Logan, Little Brother sounds really interesting... I've added it to my to-read list!

message 824: by Tisha (new)

Tisha I guess the book didnt make much of an impression on me huh?!?!? :)

message 825: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments So I finished Harry, Revised last night...It only got marginally better after I last posted. I just couldn't get offer how disgusted I was at the main character. The last line in the first chapter (well the whole first chapter ending with that line) basically ruined any chance I had of liking him despite how many changes he tried to make to himself. How many good things he tried to do.

Now I'm working on The Moon in the Mango Tree.

message 826: by Stacie (new)

Stacie Just finished "Herzog" by Saul Bellow and really enjoyed it. I just started "Raw Shark Texts" and really like it so far. I can't help myself from trying to figure it all out before the author reveals what is really happening.

message 827: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (missfryer) | 453 comments I'm getting some good ideas here, guys :)

message 828: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Well, I'm finishing up some chick lit titles that I've had sitting on my shelf. Fluff seems to go well with sitting out in the sun.

Next up I'll probably read a few YA titles...

Summerland by Michael Chabon - been meaning to get around to this for a few years.

Anne of Green Gables (series) by L.M. Montgomery - I read the first one when I was about 10 years old but can't remember much of it and I never did get around to reading the rest of the series.

I'm just in the mood for some easy breezy books right now. I need to give my brain a rest after the move.

message 829: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty (kirstyreadsandcreates) | 610 comments I've just finished a James Patterson book, and am starting The Road . I've just read the first page, and my brain is screaming at me:

"PUNCTUATION... WHERE ARE THE COMMAS????"

argh. This may take some time to get used to.

message 830: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Yes, I know what you mean, Kirsty. I had the same reaction when I read No Country for Old Men. I guess McCarthy subscribes to the Jose Saramago school of thought...no punctuation necessary. However, unlike Saramago, who became rather easy to read after a few pages...poetic even, McCarthy's method really bugged me. I never knew who was speaking or to whom...or even if they were speaking out loud or just in their head. Very frustrating.

Let me know if the story gets more tolerable because I have it on my to-read list and I don't want to get bogged down by the style again.

message 831: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty (kirstyreadsandcreates) | 610 comments I'll let you know Charity. So far I'm finding it pretty difficult.

message 832: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10620 comments Mod
Oh boy, The Road. Another huge favorite of mine. I dont know why, but when I pick up a regular 'punctuation included' novel, I struggle to read it. It must be the types of novels i am reading lately... Saramago, McCormac, even Walker (the Lancelot novel I am still reading) dont subscribe to the normal he says/she says form of novel writting. It definetly makes it a wee bit more challenging for the reader, but so much more rewarding for me.

As for Lancelot, Ive been with this book for a week now, which is a lifetime for me, however, i have been so busy as of late, between the holiday, and visiting family and just enjoying the weather with the kids (not to mention my obsession with checking this site every friggen hour..haahaahaa) that I just cant seem to find or make the time to sit and read properly. Ugh. I hate to say this, but I am looking foward to winter already just for the unlimited reading time it will allow me!!

message 833: by Macy (new)

Macy | 155 comments Ah, Lori - I understand the inclination to look forward to winter! It's so much easier to justify cuddling up with a book when it's blizzarding outside!

message 834: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments My seasons are completely flipped here in the desert. I look forward to summer because that's when the weather really sucks and I have an excuse to go hermit-style and consume endless books. "Winter" just has too good of weather for me to stay inside.

message 835: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Me too, Lori. Only 2 more months until fall, then I can start preparing for hibernation!! I'm a cold weather gal. I only put up with the sun for my kids' sake.

I can't wait for the cold weather to set in so that I can sink my teeth into some nice thick lit. I already have House of Leaves waiting in the wings for this fall. (I'm sure this will make Logan happy.)

I'm still willing to give The Road a go. The premise is enticing enough for me to want to read it. Sometimes I think I'm too much of a weakling for a Cormac McCarthy book. :-)

Please keep my updated on the book, Kirsty.

message 836: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty (kirstyreadsandcreates) | 610 comments I have put it down for the moment until I can get some peace and quiet to really concentrate on it. Will keep you posted :)

message 837: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Was it picked as a group read?

message 838: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty (kirstyreadsandcreates) | 610 comments nope, but there's been a lot of discussion on here about it. Kinda like Blindness (that wasn't a group read, but enough people were reading it that Logan started a thread for it). Blindness is on my to-buy list too.

message 839: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) I used to have this whole dilema about what to read next, now I can't even concentrate on what I am reading because I know I have Witch next and then the Road ... everytime I pass by that to-read shelf in my bedroom I can almost hear that woman with the red bun saying "would you please just hurry up and finish seeing so that I can get picked up!"

message 840: by Charity (last edited Jul 07, 2008 08:06AM) (new)

Charity (charityross) That's such a treat. You should really enjoy it, Kirsty.

message 841: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10620 comments Mod
Lorena, have you read Book Of Lost Things yet? I think you would really like that one. In it, the main character heres the books whispering and getting aggitated on the bookshelves sometimes :)

message 842: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Oooo. That sounds so Poe. :-) I wanna read it.

message 843: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Connolly, right?

message 844: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) See, that why is so great to come here, no one says ... if your books talk to you, you might need some Prozac, on the contrary, you guys fuel my imagination by doing what? Recommending a book about some crazy dude who shares my weirdness ... isn't that just great!?!

I feel like home here! LOL BTW I just added that book to my wish list Lori ... ;o)

message 845: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Me too. Looks like a great read!

I'm with you, Lorena....I like it when I'm in the company of other weirdos.

message 846: by Kirsty (last edited Jul 07, 2008 08:29AM) (new)

Kirsty (kirstyreadsandcreates) | 610 comments Me too!

Lorena, you crack me up!

edit - ok so I went to put it on my to-read list, and it's already there! Oh well, at least it means my list isn't getting any bigger (yet!)

message 847: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) ;o)

message 848: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Kirsty,I read The Road immediately after Blindness and I'm really glad I did because I found the lack of punctuation not at all difficult.I think Saramago primed me for MacCarthy.Once you get used to the rhythm it has a wonderful flow to it.

message 849: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) At this point I am afraid I am going to forget all the grammar lessons I had taken to learn English ... LOL

message 850: by Sherry (new)

Sherry *LOL* :)
