I haven't read them either Tisha! Though, I'm not planning on it. They just don't interest me. How is Obama's book? (I'm a politics freak, you've been warned).

I was looking through the Dark Tower books deciding if I wanted to continue or read something else but I think I'll set the Dark Tower aside for The Bell Jar then come back to it.It is really good.
Emma, i am halfway through the Obama book and it is REALLY good and very well written. So far, it is less about politics (Not like the Audacity of Hope) more about his self-discovery and challenges being bi-racial in his youth. However, he is now getting more into his community organizing days.
P.S. Fan of politics myself... :)
Interesting, I've been thinking about reading some of his books. I hate when people say he's not experienced! He just has different experience than the typical, white house ones.
Emma - Soulmate! I'm a politics junky as well. I was just at Borders the other day and saw that Madeleine Albright put a new book out titled Memo to the President Elect: How We Can Restore America's Reputation and Leadership which is just another book to add to my list. Any comments on Tim Russert's passing? I am still devastated. I grew up watching him and he was my most reliable guide for political discussion. So sad that he will not be a part of the next election. On the What are you reading? front - I'm jumping on the Blindness train (that somehow sounds very wrong) based on all TNBBC discussion and recommendations. I look forward to starting and visiting the discussion folder.
ha! And to think that I've been hiding my love of politics like it's some sort of sickness. Well, I guess it is a sickness, but one which I no longer have to hide away. Has anyone here read House of Bush, House of Saud by Craig Unger? Great look at the ties between the Bush family and the Saudi royal family. Also great:
The Sorrows of Empire by Chalmers Johnson
Crashing the Gate by Markos Moulitsas and Jerome Armstrong
An Ordinary Person's Guide to Empire by Arundhati Roy
Pacifism as Pathology by Ward Churchill
Imperial Ambitions by Noam Chomsky
How Would A Patriot Act? by Glenn Greenwald
Wow, as if I didn't have a good enough reason to maintain my Goodreads addiction...
I can't get behind Michael Moore. He's too pompous and self-centered. I loved his earlier movies and his old TV Show, but he just grates on my nerves these days. Plus, I get really tired having to defend him in debates.
I cant get behind Michael Moore either for exactly the reasons you said Emma. It seems his primary focus is simply to be controversial... then his stance comes next. just my opinion.I haven't read The Audacity of Hope yet. I wanted to read his 'non-political' book first.
i think i will be adding
House of Bush, House of Saud and
How Would A Patriot Act?
to my political "to reads" along with Audacity of Hope
I can understand that. Is anyone planning on reading The Real Mccain? Has anyone heard the story that he called his wife the c word?
Sherry and Lisa--I absolutely loved The Dark Tower series! I read the series the whole way through and I'm actually contemplating reading it again! Anyways, I just finished reading Eragon and have now picked up my old favorite The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. I'm really excited to be reading it again!
And, having just turned 18 last September, I am super excited to be voting this year! I have yet to read The Audacity of Hope or Dreams of My Father, but I'm looking forward to picking them up!
It's good to hear so many positive comments on the Dark Tower series.I can't believe it's taken me so long to read considering I really enjoy most of his books.
I just finished reading The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien. It's a fictional account of soldiers in Vietnam even though it reads like an autobiography. I've never read a "war" novel before but I liked this one. I went to the library today to pick up The Witch of Portobello since I voted for it but they didn't have it. So I decided to get The House of Leaves, but it was checked out. Then I decided to get The Savage Detectives but it was checked out too. So after I recovered from my deep depression I decided to read The Once and Future King. It's a summer assignment for all 9th grade students in the county I teach in and thought it might be a good idea to have read it too. I'm really enjoying so far.
I was away on vacation for a few days so this will catch me up...I finished White Rose Rebel which I loved (historical romance set during the Jacobite Rebellion in Scotland). Then I finally read the arc book I got from Barnes and Noble...Songs for the Missing by Onan which was sad but interesting...all about what a family and friends go through when a person goes missing. After that I read On the Couch by Alisa Kwitney which was really cute and funny. I was also able to start Strange Fits of Passion by Anita Shreve which is good so far.
Finished Persepolis which I enjoyed. Couldn't finish The Gathering, tho. I usually suffer to the end with books but I just couldn't with this one.Just started The Raw Shark Texts for my book club.
Finished Blindness, took me a while to get through it but what a great book, I felt like I was with them every step of the way.Next up will be Darkly Dreaming Dexter - it starts on tv over here on 6th July I think so I'm hoping to have it finished or at least a big chunk read before I watch it.
Melanie - I have The Gathering on my to read shelf, I was going to push it up my list but now I'm not so sure - what was it that you didn't like?
Also I have The Raw Shark Texts to read as well so will be interested what you think of it.
Hi Mandy, I felt like it was "overwritten", like perhaps the author was trying too hard, and it seemed a bit unfocused. I had to make myself read it. Then a friend who has similar book taste said that she finished it and really didn't like it all. Please let me know when you read it, I am curious to see if you feel the same way or if it ends up being really good.I like the Raw Shark Texts so far ( I am only about 50 pages in).
Will do, Melanie, although I'm thinking I might not get around to it for at least a month or so, just too many other books jumping out at me at the moment, you know how it is :-)I shall look forward to seeing what you think of RST once you've finished, I have heard good things about this book from members of this group.
I just started The Time Traveler's Wife this morning. I'm about halfway through already. I love a lazy day with nothing else to do but read. It's so hot here we can't go outside much. I love this book already. I can't decide what is up next. I have Water for Elephants here though.
I am now reading A Cater Street Hangman by Anne Perry. I will be reading two other Anne Perry books after that.
Catamorandi,Is A Cater Street Hangman the first book of the series or is it related to The Face of a Stranger?
I will be adding these to my TBR list and just wanted to be sure i started with the correct book first if it is a series? I can't tell by the reviews. Thanks!
AMERICAN EVE - it's about the first "It" girl at the turn of the 20th Centuryengrossing and fast paced
RUMPOLE AND THE REIGN OF TERROR on CD
by John Mortimer
entertaining and wry as always
I *think* Cater Street Hangman is the first book in the series. I remember enjoying it when I read it a few years ago.
i read anything i can get my grubby lil book loving eyes on!!!!lol but seriously ive been reading a wide variety of books lately from historical fiction, suspence thrillers horror, and a dash of non fiction
I finished The Tenth Circle tonight and I started listening to Ransom by Danielle Steel. I'm still reading Twilight but I'm almost finished with it...
Angela I just finished The Time Traveler's Wife about a week or so again. I thought it was interesting. Hope you enjoy it. And I've also got Water for Elephants on my TBR list...
I think Twilight is okay. I just got really into it on about page 275...I've got a 100 or so pages left and I'm number 7 on the waiting list at the library for New Moon. haha.
Tisha,The first story written by Anne Perry was A Cater Street Hangman with Thomas and Charlotte Pitt as the sleuths. However, she started a new series with William Monk as the sleuth and The Face of a Stranger was the first one in that series.
can't wait to plug on and get Eclipse finished too so that when the new book comes out in August, I can read it!
Carrie, your picture cracks me up. Everytime you post, I read your words in my head as a whisper... haa haa haa...
I believe that if there can be, and it is 39 holds for Twilight, there can be 77 holds for the sequel.
