What are you reading?

Hi Heather,
I have my copy of Outlander, so let me know when you would like to start! I can't wait! :)

I started The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion this morning and am more than halfway through it - it is sad and beautiful thus far.

I also liked The grapes of wrath a lot.

I finished CROSS COUNTRY and it was fantastic!!!
Now I am reading GRAVE SURPRISE by Charlene Harris."
Ann, wish I could have felt like that when trying to finally finish Moby Dick/1 But I know i would have kept wondering..

I may just have to break down and buy it new, instead of waiting to come across a used one. I really love his style. Thanks for the input:)

I loved Plainsong. I loved his other one too - that was either the sequel to it or came before it, I can't remember. Kent Haruf. Love those books!

What page are you on, Jeane? If you like the beginning, you'll LOVE the ending. It's a terrific book really - one of the greats IMO.

I read Of Mice and Men. A terrific book if you enjoy travel. He takes his dog on a USA tour cross country. Beautiful beautiful writing. I filled so many pages in a reading journal just writing down quotes from this book. Unbelievable, perfect descriptions. Hope you enjoy it.

Hi Vanessa - I think the Outlander group is waiting for me at this point. I should have my audiobook on Monday evening, and the book book sometime this coming week - I'm next in line for it at the library. Looking forward to it!

I loved "84 Charing Cross" and immediately began reading more of Helene Hanff after reading it. I read "Q's Legacy" and "The Duchess of Bloomsbury's Street". I bought "Apple of My Eye" but haven't had time to read it yet.
I also borrowed it from Netflix and loved it!
I'm currently reading Henry James's "The Tragic Muse" again.

That definitely sounds like one I would enjoy. Thanks for the recommendation.
I'm starting Cannery Row today, once I take care of some of those annoying parts of life (like work and cleaning) that keep getting in the way of reading.
Jamie, I've also added 84 Charing Cross Road to my tbr list. Thanks for making the rec.

Oh, Cannery Row was my first and only Steinbeck. I loved it!!! Enjoy!

I agree 100 percent. Sometimes it's hard to get the story through an audio book, but the reader is incredible and really brings it to life!

I am around page 60....I don't know why but it makes me think about a soft, nice good story. It isn't to put you on the border of your seat but you get so into their world, it is like you are living next to them and experience everything together..

PS? :-)

Both of these were great reads for me Operandi!

Of Mice and Men is one that really sticks with you. I read it when I was in school (years ago) and it has remained a favorite of mine through the years. Very touching book.

Thanks Tweety:-)

I may get that out again, actually, as I've finished my re-read of The Little White Horse.

OK, I'm curious (or rather, abbrieviationally challenged). What's the title of JS&MN? I saw the PS was Prodigal Summer, which I loved. I saw the comment about listening to JS&MN, which tweeked my curiosity, as I read all fiction on CD. So, please enlighten me, so I can check out JS&MN. Thanks!

hee hee glad I'm not the only doofy one here Jeane

Thanks Laura!

Thanks Laura!
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is a wonderful audio book, but as a warning it runs about 32 hours (26 cds). The book in mass paperback is 1006 pages long!

For bed time, I restarted Rose of Dutcher's Coolly. It was one of the few novels I hated in American Literature, and since I am now old and the scholar who foisted it on me is a decade or so deceased, and I can barely remember the author, I am giving it another try. After this, I think I'm going to resume Sherman's memoirs.

I'm going to start You Suck by Christopher Moore, and I hope it's good.

I'm trying to decide if I should dig into my TBR shelf, or if I should wait for the February group read announcement. Hmmm....
I just started Les Misérables. Bit of a slow start but I still love the book so far, even if it is slow :D

There was nothing wrong with it, I was actually enjoying it. But my course load includes 3 lab sciences and a lot of reading. I haven't gotten very far on any of my books this month, except Jonathan Strange (only because it's audio and I have a long commute).
I do plan on reading it again when I have more time, it just had to go back to the library.
