Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments I started a re-read of The Little White Horse, by Elizabeth Goudge, last night.

I absolutely adored this book when I was a younger reader, and it still has a lot of charm for me, I find.

Leah (ling_ling) | 226 comments I tend to read more than one book at a time. I am reading at work The Return of the King but at home I am reading State of Denial Bush at War, Part III,by Bob Woodward and then I really need to pick up Brisingr,by Christopher Paolini again which I started but for some reason keep forgetting in my car...

Don't give up. The story, I felt, had a rather hopeful ending. It wasn't a perfect ending, but you couldn't possibly expect one in such a desolate world. But it was hopeful. "The light" keeps going.

message 7805: by Allison (new)

Allison (sockweasel) | 432 comments I finished Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden tonight, and it was good.

Now I'm reading Of Mice and Men, my first Steinbeck read. :)

Lori Ann | 105 comments i'm currently re-reading the harry potter series and am on the fifth book now. any recommendations for when i finish?

message 7807: by Kelly (last edited Jan 23, 2009 10:12PM) (new)

Kelly | 204 comments Allison I have heard that Steinbeck is boring? Let me know how you like his work. I have never read anything by him because of what I heard. Since you brought it up I'm curious about your opinion. Thanks

message 7808: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 204 comments Lori when did you start the series? Im just curious to hear how long it has taken you to get to where you are now.

message 7809: by Katie (new)

Katie Lori - Have you read His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman? If you're still in the mood for that genre I found it to be an excellent way to transition from HP. I'm planning on doing my re-read of the HP series on my spring break! I'm excited :)

message 7810: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments I quite like steinbeck, much better than you know what that I just finished....

I felt like reading a big book and one the grabs ne, that I enjoy and for now Jonathan strange and mr norrel are doing that. Anybody that did like it?

message 7811: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments I just did something I almost never do. Quit a book before I finish it! I feel like I have dishonored the readers code. I just couldn't put myself thru the torture anymore. It was...The Piano Teacher A Novel

So, now I'm going to try Paint It Black
by Janet Fitch.
Anyone read this?

Good readers abandon books - don't feel bad.

message 7813: by Alisha Marie (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments I finished The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman and though I thought it was entertaining and interesting, I noticed that everytime I put it down, I had trouble picking it back up. I don't regret reading it, but it just didn't give me that feeling of "Oh! I'll just read two more chapters..." and the next thing you know it's 3 in the morning and you've read the entire book.

Right now I'm reading The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher Murder and the Undoing of a Great Victorian Detective by Kate Summerscale. I'm actually excited about this one. It seems fascinating.

message 7814: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Finishing today Barbara Delinsky's "The Secret Between Us." I had already bought it when my book club decided to read her latest book which we got an advance copy of. Now I've read two of her books and I'm really wondering what the big deal is.

message 7815: by [deleted user] (new)

Jill said: Now I'm probably going to start on Steven Pinker's The Blank Slate.

Let me know what you think. I read two of his things half way thru - had time to read only in bed at night and the subjcet matter needed more lucidity. Will try again.

message 7816: by Allison (new)

Allison (sockweasel) | 432 comments Kelly, I actually really enjoyed Of Mice and Men. :) I finished it last night. I thought it was very good. If you're going to try a Steinbeck sometime, that might be a good one to start with because it's only 100 pages long. :) I'll probably pick up more of his work in the future.

Now I'm starting on A Thousand Splendid Suns.

Thank you Helen.
I'm slowly coming out of my funk feeling after abandoning it.
Hopefully, this new one will be better

message 7818: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (cyndil62) | 253 comments I'm reading The Owl and Moon Cafe by Jo-Ann Mapson which is enjoyable, but I keep feeling like I've read it before. For some reason I've been into 'light' reading lately, I still have Anna Karanina(sp?) on my night-stand and Three Cups of Tea but haven't picked them back up... Do you ever get like that; just want to read 'fluff' so to speak!

message 7820: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Gonna finish A Long Way Down. Have another one of him but will read some other books first because it isn't my favourite book at all. Not bad but well. Don't like the style. The second aprt of the book was interesting and better but before and after not at all. Like(don't remember who) said, too 21th century written.

message 7821: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Kelly wrote: "Allison I have heard that Steinbeck is boring? Let me know how you like his work. I have never read anything by him because of what I heard. Since you brought it up I'm curious about your opinion. ..."

He writes very starkly. There is very little description, and he makes no attempt to sway the readers opinion. He puts forth his characters in very black and white terms. That's what I love about him. I don't think it's boring, because it's refreshing to read such honesty! (just my opinion)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments I like Steinbeck. Cannery Row is my favorite, though its sequel, Sweet Thursday, is also very good.

I loved Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, Jeane.

Kellie - I abandon books all the time. Life is too short to read books you're not enjoying! (Or don't need to read for some other reason, naturally.)

I used to feel really guilty too when I didn't like a book and abandoned it - like somehow I was going to get in trouble. From whom? I've always loved reading and I especially love reading for my own pleasure and education. Since I'm not in school anymore, I don't HAVE to read something I'm not finding enjoyable or beneficial in one form or another. I also don't have to read or like books just because "everyone else" does. So, Kellie, find a book you enjoy reading! No guilt trips!! :)

message 7827: by Catamorandi (new)

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) | 1045 comments Allison, I am going to be reading MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA. this week or next. Right now, I'm reading WATER FOR ELEPHANTS.

message 7828: by Catamorandi (new)

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) | 1045 comments No I haven't seen it. I prefer to wait until I read something, so it doesn't ruin the storyline for me. I don't read back covers, prologues, introductions, etc. It ruins the effect.

message 7829: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I like the book better, but I like the book better about 99.99% of the time.

My friend Jason watched "City of Ember" last night, and he said it was really good, so he's gonna get me a copy of it. But I can't watch it until I've read the book, because I really hate seeing movies before I've read the book. *sigh*

message 7830: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments Allison wrote: "Kelly, I actually really enjoyed Of Mice and Men. :) I finished it last night...."

Allison, I loved of Mice and Men, both the book and the movie versions. It is just one of those stories that tug at the heart strings.

A Thousand Spendid Suns, ditto. Would like to know what you think when you are finished reading it.

I read of Mice and Men at school - Can't remember a thing about it!

message 7832: by Esther (new)

Esther (eshchory) | 575 comments I used to feel guilty about giving up on books until I joined Goodreads. Then I realised I wasn't alone in finding some books unfinishable.

Now poor old Moby Dick is beached on my beside table and I don't think I'm ever going to rescue him.

message 7833: by [deleted user] (new)

Kelly, I used to feel that way about abandoning books. Now I feel that life is too short: there are too many books and too little time - if it doesn't speak to me I'll put it down and (maybe) try again later on.

Now I'm reading another book filled with controversy... I'm re-reading the Poisonwood Bible and just loving it. The father/preacher character is so stereotyped and easy to hate, but his tirades are so funny.

JuliAnna | 85 comments Linda wrote: "Allison, I loved of Mice and Men, both the book and the movie versions. It is just one of those stories that tug at the heart strings. "

I read Of Mice and Men recently and really enjoyed it. I've just added Cannery Row to my TBR pile on Susanna's recommendation. I think I might need some of Steinbeck's stark prose before I start in on Anna Karenina. I should finish my current book, Butcher's Academ's Fury, tonight.

message 7835: by Jill (new)

Jill (wanderingrogue) | 329 comments Along with Pinker's book (which is, so far, fascinating and requires all one's concentration), I've also started to read the ever-popular The Book Thief. I'm surprisingly picky about what book suggestions I take, and this'll be the first suggestion specifically grounded in this group.

hehe, poor Moby Dick...

message 7837: by Donna (new)

Donna | 137 comments I just finished The House Without a Key and really enjoyed it. It was written in 1925 so some of the phrases are a bit dated and there is some stereotyping which we wouldn't see in contemporary novels but the plot was complex and the description of Honolulu in the 20s was interesting. You can see why Charlie Chan became a popular movie detective

message 7838: by Amy (new)

Amy (awindrope) | 4 comments I just finished Guernsey Literary Potato Peel Pie and it was just what I hoped for. A little romance, a little history and a spunky main character. The biggest flaw in the book is how Elizabeth seems too good to be true which is then mirrored in the main character. I wish she had just a hint of darkness.

Steinbeck is one of my favorite authors. Maybe because I am from Central Valley of CA but the Grapes of Wrath feels personal - like it is "my" family's tragedy. I love the way the chapter alternate between the narrative and the global or universal perspective.

message 7839: by Vicki (new)

Vicki I just finished The Stolen Child, I enjoyed reading the books from both point the point of view of Henry Day and the changeling form, Aniday.

I am about halfway through Guernsey, will probably finish it this weekend and I just picked up A Thousand Splendid Suns.

Thanks everyone for your comments. You are so nice! All the guilt is gone! I am very eager to start my next book! :)

Those of you talking about Steinbeck.
I was really hesitant to read East of Eden. I was pleasantly surprised when I did. It was wonderful. I definitely want to read more of his.

A Thousand Splendid Suns is a wonderful story. I have actually seen the author in person and had some books signed. He truly is a great story teller and a very interesting person.

Good to hear so many good things about A Thousand Splendid Suns, I'm excited to get further into it. :)

Linda~ I'll definitely let you know. I'm glad you liked it! :) We seem to have similar taste in books. ;)

Paula | 1098 comments I am just getting started in "Triangle" it's a NF about a disastrous factory fire in NY in 1911. Pretty good so far but only a few pages in. I've been working quite a bit so it cuts into my reading time but the LTE where I am working gave me "The Watson's go to Birmingham" and "Bud, Not Buddy" to read over the weekend. They are YA books by Curtis, Newberry winners. I'm almost finished with The Watson's.

The first one I read was Cannery Row and I loved it! It was pretty short too, and easy to get through.

message 7850: by Melissa (last edited Jan 24, 2009 05:22PM) (new)

Melissa (sweetmelissa818) This has been a bad month for reading for me. I've now stopped reading (for now) The Thirteenth Tale A Novel. I also stopped reading Playing with the Grown-Ups by Sophie Dahl. I started school this month and am going to have to force myself to not start so many books and not finish them.
I'm still working on the audio version of
Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell and I'm really enjoying it. I also started The Elite by Jennifer Banash for some lighter YA reading. And Sexus by Henry Miller, which I'm enjoying immensely!
