Have you read Guernsey Amy? (Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society) Prodigal Summer and Guernsey are both in my Top 5 all time faves.

I have either Twilight or PS I Love You to read next. Any suggestions?

Dori (dorifritzinger) I am reading "The Godfather Returns" by Mark Winegardner and am really into it.

message 7657: by Laura (new)

Laura | 45 comments I recently started the Book Thief. I have been passively participating in this group for some time and couldn't resist all the great things people are saying about the Book Thief. Only a few pages in for now but the premise so far seem pretty interesting. I have to saythat this book group is incredibly addictive and bad for the wallet!

message 7658: by Emily (new)

Emily I recently finished Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See, which I found interesting and enjoyable even though I had to skip through some of the footbinding parts; now I am on to A Ship Made of Paper by Scott Spencer.

message 7659: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 204 comments LOL. Thats funny Jamie because I was thinking the same thing before I read your post. All I have to say is OMG. That lady Robin sounds exactly like my daughter in law. Rude and a very bad attitude.

Thank you for the suggestion. I am just back from the library and I have the Guernsey book on my bed side table. I had to read Comfort me with Apples first by Ruth Riechl - which I adored.

Catherine | 175 comments It seems I missed all the drama, but am caught up on all the current reads! I've moved on to the 6th book in the Sookie series, Definitely Dead. They are so addictive!

message 7663: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I'm currently reading Heart-Shaped Box A Novel by Joe Hill (Stephen King's son). It's very interesting and creepy. I'm liking it so far.

message 7664: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I have read only through #6 of Sookie, but if I can't stick out Norrell and Strange, I have #7 in the wings. Honestly, I know that's part of the problem. I so badly want to get back to Sookie, nothing short of Stephen King can hold my interst! I am addicted! I guess I should just give in and read until 8, so I can wait with breathless anticipation for March like the rest of the girls!!!!

I presently have a 70 year woman with a 1200 word reading vocabulary and not a great grasp on idiom (she is improving but at 70 her memory often fails her). She likes to read a book or two a week.
English language books are not easy to find and in paperback cost $15-20 each.
Even the simplest articles I find online are too hard or too short for her. Also I would spend an hour or so online looking for such articles which is hardly practical for an hour a week lesson.

Simplified readers from the library are not a choice they are our only option and have the advantage that she can choose them herself.

message 7666: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 175 comments Kandice, I understand - I can't stop reading Sookie. I have the 1-7 boxed set, but I need to look into getting #8. I feel like I can't concentrate on any other reading until I'm done.

message 7667: by [deleted user] (new)

The Time Traveller's Wife. This is the Book that will get me reading ficiton again! It is so good and so weird and so funny.

Only "flaw", if you can call it that: A little too much sex. I mean, I'm not a prude (as you all well know!) but I'm finding it distracting and don't feel it really adds anything to the love story. "Oh, put in a lot of sex, otherwise no one will read a book this long all the way to the end" kind of thing... dunno, am I being too "square".

Well, of course I'll say Twilight, as I am a YA fiend - But PS I love you was pleasantly surprising for me as well - not your typical, everyday romance novel. I would go for PS and then start into the Twilight series, so you can read them all in a row! :)

OH - and I loved Thousand Splendid as well! I think I even liked it better than Kite Runner... you should try Water for Elephants as well, if you haven't already. One of my faves!

Thanks again to everyone who jumped on the "bash Robin" train. What a boob. She emailed me back and told me that she can see this is a group that was created just to please me and follow my rules. And that she felt she posted correctly in this thread.

Oye vey!... well, I booted her, and the threads are now back to normal! TNBBC saves the day, again!

to those who are obsessed with Sookie.. I love that series, and try to read one of the books between my regular reads... I have read up to the 6th one, I think... they are little slices of brain candy heaven!

I just finished "Secret Life of Bees." What did you think? "Rebecca" will be quite a change but a great book.

message 7675: by Lisa (new)

Lisa "We Band of Angels" and "The Frog Prince" by Jane Porter. Two very different reads.

message 7676: by [deleted user] (new)

Lisa and Ashley: I really liked "Bees". It got off to a slow-ish start, but I really enjoyed it in the end.

message 7677: by Lisa (new)

Lisa For a book that dealt with such serious subject matter, it never got bogged down. I thought the characters were great fun!

Well Lori, it IS your group. You could choose not to allow people who didn't have Frog avatars and nobody could say anything about it.

So let her say what she wants and think what she wants. Those of us who have IQs over 10 know this is a great group, with a great Mod, and I'd gladly change my avatar to a frog to stay! ;)

message 7679: by michelle (last edited Jan 20, 2009 08:17AM) (new)

michelle (mbsings) I just recently finished The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao which I thought was good but not Pulitzer Prize worthy. I decided that I needed a break from some of the heavier topics I've been reading about and am now almost finished with Deception Point. It's a very light read (we were traveling this weekend) and reminiscent of older Michael Creighton novels.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments I'm still reading The Vertigo Years: Europe 1900-1914. Interesting thus far (it is now 1905).

In fiction, I'm out of the mood for mysteries, but that's what I seem to have around. Time to go to the bookstore.

Fiona, i wouldn't mind if someone isn't good in English, as long as they try..BUT only if they come in this group to talk about the books they read or want to read....well to do what this groups is made for. And being rude like that...well there is no excuse at all.

Dorie (dorieann) | 430 comments I finished "Only Forward" by Michael Marshall Smith, which continued being very good. I gave it 4 stars, and would recommend it to anyone who likes accessible sci-fi.

I'm now onto Evanovich's "Plum Spooky", mostly to get it out of the way so I can pass it along to the two other people waiting to read it.

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments I am also reading THE STAND. It has been 17 years since I read it and am finding it is reading as a new book to me. I did get the one with the extra 400 pages, and I was wondering if King also added new stuff all in the middle, because I am not remembering a bunch. But I am really enjoying it.
