What are you reading?
Currently reading Don't Eat This Book Fast Food and the Supersizing of America, which I decided on for the "Read a book that represents one of your New Year's Resolutions" for the Official Winter Challenge. Morgan Spurlock is a funny, funny dude. I've seen "Supersize Me" and enjoyed it, so I am glad that I found this book. Should be interesting!
To all the Christopher Moore fans, just wanted to let you know they have 10 copies of his newest book "Fool" as giveaways this month, so go and enter! I never win these, but I hope at least someone from TNBBC will get lucky.
Currently reading Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?I know it's crazy, but this is my first Philip K. Dick novel.
Hello, I am new to the group. I just finished Red Tails in Love. A lovely read that made me long for Central Park, though I have never been there. I am now looking for an intelligent and well written romance. The last good one I read was Prodigal Summer- which I loved. Any suggestions?

Fiona, let me know how it goes. I just read the summary and I am not so sure about it. It feels a bit weird and surreal.... .

Those are the only one for me who make me think about what a book like The prodigal summer did to me. They go a bit along the same level and kind according to me.
I'm currently reading The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman. I literally devoured The Golden Compass and The Subtle Knife. Several of my friends have been telling me for years to give His Dark Materials a try, and I'm so glad I did! I actually just watched the movie The Golden Compass with the kids that I baby-sit. Yeesh. That was so disappointing. No wonder they aren't making the next one.
Just finished Gone With The Wind and adored it!Started The Tea House on Mulberry Street. A much shorter book.
I haven't been on goodreads much lately since reading GWTW and becoming addicted to facebook.
But I haven't left y'all. I still hover and read what y'all have to say.

That is yet another book on my TBR list (well, not on goodreads, but it's on my shelf at home). Also, everyone keeps talking about The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society plus The Book Theif, both of which I have an inerest in now! As I am abroad this year and it will be hard to pack everything to go back home, I do need to make at least a feeble attempt to resist...
For the time being, school reading dominates and I'm primarily working on Pat Barker's The Ghost Road.
Liz, I know the abroad problem with books. Till now I have never done very well with that problem, but LIBRARY!!!!!!!
That's a good tip, although I would need to figure out where the library is. I would also need TIME! That seems to be a bit lacking with all of my academic reading. This is what summer is for...

You are sweet.
I'll start spending more time here....It's nice to know I'm wanted :)
of course you are wanted here!!! You like books and writes interesting posts....and even if i don't know you besides from TNBBC you seem to be a nice person. So when you aren't reading...you know where to go!!!!
Kellie, it's good to see you back! :) Glad you liked GWTW so much, that is one I have been wanting to read for ages. :)
I read The Archer's Tale Book One of the Grail Quest, by Bernard Cornwell, last night.I would not recommend it. Flat characters who go through almost no development, and do what the plot directs them to do, because the plot directs them to do it. Writing - competent, I guess. A pity, because the battle of Crecy is potentially a great setting.
From me, a big fat "eh."
I just finished She Got Up Off The Couch and absolutely loved it. I love Haven Kimmel's writing style so much I signed up for her blog. I enjoyed this one more than her Zippy book.
I also finished Her Last Death. I cannot recommend it though. The last few chapters were excellent and there was a lot of depth but 75 percent of the book was empty and poorly written. It was just too much.

I hate it when you look at a back, think it's giong to be really really good and then by the end you just go, "Meh, that was a disappointment."
Currently reading Moab is my Washpot by Stephen Fry and Dear Fatty by Dawn French (both are autobiography's).
Leanne wrote: "Currently reading Moab is my Washpot by Stephen Fry and Dear Fatty by Dawn French (both are autobiography's)."Ooooh. Let me know what you think of Moab is my Washpot. I've been wanting to read that.
Love Dawn French too. :)
Jill.... totally pick up A Scanner Darkly by Philip K Dick. I really loved that one. I want to read Do Androids Dream, so please let me know what you think of it!
right now im reading the Host by Stephinie Meyers. its something i was interested in exploring but having a hard time gitting into it! the fact that my 2 year old son wont let me be for longer then a min lol...
Gretchen keep reading!! It takes a little bit to get into but it gets so good! Definitely worth the read. I found The Host to be very well written, with an original, nail-biting plot. I'm not a fan of Twilight, and this book totally redeemed Meyer in my mind. I hope you can get into it and enjoy it.
I've just finisihed A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Beautiful beautiful book. I loved reading about Francie and all her adventures. I hope it is one of many I can label my favourites this year.
I finished A Dirty Job A Novel today, and it was a very fun read. :) I enjoyed it a lot. And now I've started Memoirs of a Geisha, and I'm enjoying it a lot already, even though I'm only like 50 pages in. Arthur Golden is clearly a very good writer! :)
I am just starting "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time". I flipped through it, and it looks interesting. I hope it lives up to the hype.I have "A Tree Grows In Brooklyn" in my bookshelf... I've heard a lot of really good things about it, but I don't have anywhere to fit it into my reading schedule at the moment. :(
I totally know what you mean, Rachel. However, in middle school I learned that I can only focus on one book at a time. I only have so many on my currently reading list because they're all for school! I'm mainly focusing on Ghost Road.

I'm about halfway through A Peculiar Grace by Jeffrey Lent. I'm really enjoying it! I just picked up 3 books on CD from the library today, so I'm set for any bad weather that may come our way!
I have had a really good reading week. I must not have done something I should have...I wonder what that is?I read Left to Tell Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust
and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly! Phew! Love it!
I just finished Diving Bell about an hour ago. I watched the movie a couple of weeks ago and the story is so gripping. I really wonder how much seeing the movie affected my feelings about the book but of course there is no way to know. I loved the movie and the book.
Now I have to decide what to read next. If I learned anything from the 3 books this week it is to be grateful that I have so many choices.
Mary, thanks for sharing your books! I just added The Diving Bell and the Butterfly to my TBR list. I just finished reading A Three Dogs Life by Abigail Thomas and found it to be a gem. I am currently reading Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen and also just started The Wednesday Letters by Jason Wright which has me hooked!
Gretchen wrote: "right now im reading the Host by Stephinie Meyers. its something i was interested in exploring but having a hard time gitting into it! the fact that my 2 year old son wont let me be for longer then..."Gretchen, wou;d it help (and work) if you take your son with you and read it kinda to him. I mean for you but just telling him.
message 7921: by Katie ------------I loved Pullman's trilogy also! It's one of my favorites. Wasn't the movie the worst??? Talk about a let down.
Just finished Live in the Time of Cholera and really loved it, his writing is just so rich. For a total change I am now reading Maximum Ride:The Angel Experiment (to see what has got my 11 year old so enthused). The story is quite exciting but Patterson seems to think that teenagers (his characters and readers) have pretty limited vocabularies and possibly brain sizes. Still I'm glad that my son is loving them and most importantly reading.

I'm very close to the end of the book and can safely say that I highly recommend it!
Gretchen.
Isnt it great to get some time alone at nite to curl up with a great book????
I am currently in the same situation that Rachel is in... I am less than a hundred pages away from completing Midnights Children, started Pale Fire when I bought it at a library sale this past Thursday, and my youngest asked me to start reading Coraline with him since its going to be a movie.... I never know which to pick up and read.....
Ahhh...
I dont usually read more than one book at a time so this is driving me bonkers!

I am currently reading The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. I am on page 338 now and I have to say I really love the book. Should have read it a long time ago but the number of pages was deterent.
I am about to read Epicenter. It is a non fiction book about the end of the world in this particular author's eyes. A friend recommended it to me. She read it in a Bible study group.
I have just spent over an hour reading others posts here and was so excited that I joined for the updates! I am currently reading Why did I Ever by Mary Robinson. I picked in up on a "Must Read" wall in a trustworthy bookstore I visit when in NH. Robinson writes prose posing as a novel consisting on short chapters (sometimes no more than a 5 word sentance). Up next may be Book of Lost Things after Lori's and and other's recommendations.
Thanks!
Not sure if I mentioned this before, but I'm reading Rebel Angels. I'm almost finished with it. I'm enjoying it much more than the first book.

I am all for discussing novels, but I hope this is not some new sneaky form for pushing books and bumping ratings. that is not what this group OR site was created for.....
Just food for thought really. Not making accusations. But it gets under my skin when I think people are abusing the soap box that is TNBBC!
Carry on!
