What are you reading?

Kathy, let me know what you think of "Messenger". I was disappointed in it but will see what you think.
I also loved "The Giver" and thought "Gathering Blue" was good.

How terrible for you Eliza! At least maybe the books will take your mind off of these problems and things will look up for you this week.

We are on similar wavelengths - thumbs up to Guesney not so much for Stardust.

So I did enjoy it but I was "less than satisified" with the ending. What were your thoughts?

I must say I'm a bit intimiated by the shear size of of this and have not been able to "get into" it too much.

I found New Moon to be much slower than Twilight - interested in your opinion Jan.

Oohhh it has years since I thought of it. One of the few times I saw the movie without reading the book - I might have to pick that up - thanks for reminding me of it.

What did you think? I wasn't overly impressed but not sorry I read them either.

I definitely recommend it - especially to those who are fond of memoirs about religion, forbidden love, poor families and war. Definitely an insightful read!
Now what to read...
I startd on the The Omnivore's Dilemma but then decided not to read it because I need to return it in a few days and I lost interest. I am interested in all things food and science but I felt a bit off when everything was about the USA so I figured, I might first read one that is relevant to my country and then go back to the Omnivores Dilemma.
Now I'm debating which book to read. I have Girl Meets Boy: The Myth of Iphis and it's due from the library in a week. I'm not sure if I will read it because I feel like reading something light and funny and magical. Jonathan Strange & Mr Norell is an option but that one is certainly not light (especially since I have a paperback where the publisher has tried to make it as thin as possible by having a really tiny text).
Hmmm...this is hard. Anyone?

I agree, New Moon definitely went slower. Once it picked up, it redeemed itself a little though. Twilight is definitely my favorite!

I enjoyed the book much more than the movie once I got into it. I hate it when they change things just to market it.

Yeah, the movie wasn't all that it could have been. It was good for a movie by itself, but having just read the book I was very biased.

I am reading Ender's Game. My husband is very interested in the series and he convinced me to start reading it. So far I really enjoy it! Also, I am waiting to receive Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell and Guernsey in the mail so I can start on them for the book club.

It took me a really long time to get into it, but when I did I really liked it!

Dorie, I loved The Graveyard Book.
Darla, I enjoyed Where the Heart Is. I was afraid it would be too "sappy" for my taste, but it was actually a good book.
Jacha, The Thirteenth Tale was really good too.

So okay, now I have to take a break and do some deep breathing exercises before I hyperventilate.

The Shadow of the Wind.
It came highly recommended by a friend.
I can't wait.
This is the 1st paragraph of the preface . . .
I still remember the day my father took me to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books for the first time. It was the early summer of 1945, and we walked through the streets of a Barcelona trapped beneath ashen skies as dawn poured over Rambla de Santa Monica in a wreath of liquid copper."
I like that description. It's poetic without making me barf.

I tried to get into Testimony by Anita Shreve, but just couldn't keep going with it. Just not into reading about a sex scandal in a high school involving minors and adults. So it went on to my abandoned/lost intersst shelf. I generally like her books, but not this one.
I'm now reading The Face of Death by Cory McFadyen. Pretty intriguing so far.
