Melissa, I'm glad you liked Stardust. It is great so far! :)

I just finished The Graveyard Book-Neil Gaiman. It was my first read of his, and I really enjoyed it. Clever story. I've been wanting to read Stardust...I am now reading Breaking Dawn. I can't believe the book is 700+ pages! I am okay with the series, but I think I'm reading this one b/c I know it's the end and I want to see how the story will conclude. I really liked the first one and loved Bella's character (she just seemed really real), but the story gets more off the wall as it goes on. I guess I could just go on one of the 300 Twilight sites and find out the end, but what would be the fun in that???
Next I'm going to finish the Gemma Doyle trilogy(read the first, thanks Emma!). Then it's Monsters of Templeton, the first Sookie Stackhouse, and Guernsey Potato book ;-)
Adrienne, since hearing the explanation given about the book in the movie The lake house, I really want to read it!!!!

Hi I am Linda and new to the club. Currently I am reading Testimony by Anita Shreve and Pieces of my sister's life by Elizabeth Joy Arnold. I am really enjoying Pieces but Testimony no so much but I am still not that far into it.
I have not read or heard about The Town that Forgot to Breathe. How is it and what is is about?
Hi! I'm Linda and new to the club. I am currently reading Testimony by Anita Shreve and Pieces of my Sister's Life by Elizabeth Joy Arnold. I am not overly thrilled with Testimony yet (still in the beginning. I guess i will give it more time. I am really enjoying Pieces.
Sorry I have not read or heard about the book you mentioned.
Although I have multiple books listed on my currently reading, I'm primarily working on Things Fall Apart, A Room With A View, and A Theory of Adaptations. Also, I haven't been on for about two weeks and have just discovered that we're reading Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell--this is quite weird for me, as my boyfriend just lent me that book! Unfortunately it must be put off for a while due to school work :(
I finished The Book of Lost Things today. It was really good; I'm definitely looking forward to reading more of Connelly's work. But tomorrow morning I'll pick up JS&MN at the library and get started on that.
Adrienne - I'm glad to see you're reading Persuasion - it's my favorite book of all-time. I hope you enjoy it!
Liz, what do you think of Things Fall Apart, I am teaching it right now, and almost all of my students hate it.
I just finished Vanishing Acts by Jodi Picoult, I liked it. I am almost done with Blue is for nightmares, a YA novel. I will be starting The Stolen Child tonight. I have the January reads on order and hope to get them next week.
I am reading American Wife by Curtis Sittenfield and have about 60 pages left. I'm loving it. I'm so impressed with the way Sittenfield adds depth to characters I might not normally like, especially her exploration of public vs. private lives. This will definitely go down as a modern classic.
Fiona wrote: "I will join you 3 in reading Watership Down - Richard Adams "I think I'll be ready to start this one on Saturday! Gemma, are you still in too?
I'm still reading Emma, and I'm enjoying it a lot more now that I'm past the halfway point. I'd really like to finish it tonight or tomorrow. I'm planning on moving on to Guernsey next.
For those of you reading Watership Down, or those who have read it, you can start a thread for it in the Wanna Discuss This Novel folder..... since there is so much being said about it...

Jana, have you read anything else by Curtis Sittenfeld? I've read both Prep and The Man of My Dreams and thought both were decent. Maybe I'll look into her latest. Glad you're enjoying it!
Hey Vicki, so far I really like Things Fall Apart. I think it's an interesting story with tons of interesting commentaries on tribal life and religious conflicts. One thing I've noticed about it is that Achebe doesn't decide to go into every minute plot detail. If he did, his novel would be much longer, but I think his choice to write about the plot in small snippets makes what the reader does read more poignant. However, we'll have to see if all of this holds true once I finish the book!
Paula wrote: "Glad you're feeling better Dori and hope you have a great time spending that $100 gift certificate! "Thanks Paula, you're so sweet! I did have a great time book buying and posted them on the splurge thread.

I was planning to do that Lori, thx for the reminder.
*pets Lori to calm her down*
I finished The Hour I First Believed by Wally Lamb on 12/30. That is one really good book!! I've about 1/2 the way through Still Summmer by Jacquelyn
Yesterday I finished The Reader by Bernhard Schlink which I really enjoyed and today I began Coal Black Horse by Robert Olmstead.
Finished Anne of Green Gables. It was terrific! Gonna start Watership Down soon, and anyone else who wants to join in can too - I added a thread as Lori suggested.
Liz and Vicki-i read things fall apart for a world lit class my 4th year in college, and i have to say i really disliked it. i think it had a lot to do with the age i was then, and the subject matter in general. i still have my copy of it, and may go back to it some day. liz, i'll keep your thoughts in mind if ever i get back to it.
Robin wrote: "So I'm now about 1/3 into The Name of the Wind w..."I finished The Name of the Wind recently too. I thought it was a very good book. Especially for a new author! The second book in the series is supposed to come out in April; I'm waiting anxiously for that. :)
I hope you enjoy the book, Robin!
Finished The Gargoyle. I thought it was pretty good, although I wasn't particularly fond of the narrator. The stories within stories are what kept me reading.I started Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell last night, but by page 6 my mind was wandering. Due to the sheer size (the thing is like brick in my bag!) and its slowness I've decided to read 2 books at the same time. This is huge, as I have not read multiple books since grade school. LOL. So...ahem, drum roll please....I've started reading A Great and Terrible Beauty...thanks to Gemma's challenge. I have been promising to read it for a couple of months already. So far I'm enjoying it. :-)
just finished Twilight and am reading New Moon, also struggling to get through Dark Rivers of the Heart. I know I'm late getting on the Twilight wagon but I'm there now. Nice enjoyable fast read
Liz, it's nice to hear positive things being said about the book. I don't think I liked it much the first time I read it, which was my second year of college, but this time I appreciate it so much more. I think my students get bogged down with the cultural terms and confused with all the characters. I feel its a book that really needs a second read, I know I needed it. Maria, I probably read it the first time about the age that you did. I was maybe 21ish... I distinctly remember not liking it, but I did get better this time around. I hope if you decide to read it again it gets better for you.
A Long Way DownWonder where the author got the idea but it starts with four people meeting each other, strangers to eachother, on a roof where each wanted to commit suicide.
I didn't read Prep because so many students were reading it, and I thought it was young adult. But after reading this, I will definitely look into Prep. My suspicion is that she has grown a lot as a writer between these two pieces.
Did anyone read Revolutionary Road? The movie looks really interesting and I'm wondering whether it's worth reading first.
Linda.I would love to hear what you think of Testimony. I am a big fan of Anita Shreve and have had my eye on that book for a while...
Vicki wrote: "Liz, what do you think of Things Fall Apart, I am teaching it right now, and almost all of my students hate it. "I'm with the students! I didn't care for this book much at all.
I have finished it now, and I actually did enjoy it. I pretty much maintain my earlier thoughts on it. I'll say that the ending did not particularly surprise me. What makes me laugh, Linda and Vicki, is that both of you said that you read it when you were around 20, which is my age now (weird, right?).Anyways, I suppose now I'll be working primarily on A Theory of Adaptation and John Dryden's translation of Virgil's Aeneid plus A Room with a View by E.M. Forester.
I reread "The Giver" the other day and the follow up "Gathering Blue." Loved "The Giver" and liked "Gathering Blue" quite a bit. I also read "Anthem" by Ayn Rand which was pretty good. I think Lois Lowry has definitely read it. I am now reading the other follow up to "The Giver" called "The Messenger." So far I am enjoying it. If you haven't read "The Giver" you should definitely read it. It is a wonderful book.
Hey Carrie! I'm a huge fan of Wally Lamb too. I really hope we don't have to wait 10 years for another book. A while ago I read Wrapped in Rain by Charles Martin (a GR author). In many ways it reminded me of Lamb's I Know This Much is True, with a spiritual aspect to it. Great story about two brothers and their coming apart and then coming together following an extrremely abusive childhood. Also, an old girlfriend of one of the brother's mysteriously reappears in their life, which adds another demension to the story. Great book!!
Finished Married Lovers - Jackie Collins @ 12.45am. Will read the following 3 books: Dissolution - C.J. Sansom , Skin & Bone - Kathyrn Fox & The Family Bones - Kimberley Raiser.

Do you mean today Laura?
yeah, today Titch, but at this point we're waiting for Bugs Bunny to get the carrots out of her ears (and eyes) and finish the short novel she started while she was waiting for me to finish the novel I started while I was waiting for her to finish the one she was reading before so we could read it together.Whew!
Started Guernsey last night and am loving it! Had to physically restrain myself from finishing it when I saw how late it was getting.

She's hilarious and very much afraid of dolls. This book is on my to read list as well, but I haven't gotten it in the mail yet.
